Finalizing everything!

How is the feel of the keyboard compared to the Pandora?

On the Pandora, I have to press the keys harder than I'd like, and there's not enough tactile feedback (I get my sudo password wrong about 50% of the time).

Then you probably have one of the hard keyboards we got from one batch. Can be replaced.

I have a CC unit from Craig, and a 1GHz from the Dragonbox selfdestructing touchscreen batch (touchscreen already replaced). The latter has the better keyboard of the two. Hard to know if there's something wrong or if it's a matter of taste. At the moment I'm mostly concerned about "would I like the Pyra keyboard".

As for if you can add 4G yourself later, that depends on skills and equipment, I suppose. It would probably be easier and cheaper for most people to just swap the main board.

I'm fairly confident in my soldering skills but small expensive components on an expensive board is too far out of my comfort zone to actually do it.

It's very much on a theoretical level, like in case of a zombie apocalypse and my phone battery gets eaten (but the phone itself mysteriously did not) I could resolder the 4G module which by an insane coincidence is pin compatible. Even more mysteriously I would be calm enough to solder SMD with a hairpin and an open fire without bridging any connections. Not a very likely scenario but sometime in the distant future I bet that's exactly what's going to happen in a dream ;)

Thanks for the answer.

How can we tell if this is the problem? I get a refurbed CC from you a couple years ago, and kinda have the same complaints as @HelenF . Mine feels like I have to push in too far, and once I do it is squishy (no useful tactile feedback). Perhaps the "hard" keymat would be better for me if mine is a typical one.

my pandora keyboard is too soft

My Pandora keyboard is just right

But seriously, when typing blind (entering passwords and so on) I often find myself not pressing keys hard enough on other membrane type keyboards, but that rarely happens on my GHz pandora. I sometimes am not sure if I've entered the password correctly due to key pressure, but on hitting enter I usually find that I have.

The only problems I have on my Pandora's keyboard have all been fixed on the Pyra - number keys in a daft place, and not enough symbol keys. Even if the keys are a little harder to press it's probably an improvement to me.

We will probably also replace one charger chip, as the current one can only handle one charger port input, but want that you can charge through both MicroUSB ports so you can use the other one while charging.
Do I understand correctly that this would mean charging 2x as fast with 2x USB power adapters?

A bit late to the party here, and not that my preference is of any significant indication (I belong to no group or even nichey niche niche *thbbbt*)...

I would have prefered a completely international 3G chip (can be used anywhere in the world including USA) over the 4G one.

And I would go for 4gb ram if available.

Whichever version has the 4gb ram is the one I would aim for.

If wifi version has 4gb I may even concider it... if only the 4G has 4gb, then wifi version is off the table for me.

if they ALL only have 2gb... I will pretend to sulk...

Since the buttons now are part of the keymat, I'm curious as to if they will feel the same as the keyboard buttons. I'm hoping they feel more solid. I was able to use the Pandora's keys in games, but it didn't feel nearly as nice as using the actual abxy buttons. Can you comment on how the 6 game buttons feel in comparison to the keyboard keys, as well as in comparison to the abxy buttons and keyboard of the Pandora for reference?

Nothing has been decided how to exactly improve the circuits of the prototype, but most likely it will become a switch (TPS2115A) to select the power source that provides more input voltage (still limited to 5.5V).
And you are right: the problem with the current circuits is that we did not think enough about the use case of connecting two USB power supplies. And especially unplugging one of them from the wall socket but not from the Pyra...

It seems there a handful of us with those preferences. If 4GB doesn't happen, oh well. With preorders starting soon we should be able to find out relatively soon if 4G or 3G is happening. For me, 4G seems best atm, but since I can't be sure what will happen in, say, then next year, it may be that 3G is best if I end up bouncing around the world again. Either is better for me than wifi only.

I think the Pyra keyboard layout is a huge improvement as well. Give me a few minutes while I try to figure out how to keep this keyboard discussion alive. :p Although the keycaps are a practical and minor thing, I think they look pretty cool, and I love that they will protect the paint (I am typing this from a thumb keyboard missing paint on half the keys...).

Just know that if it feels too bad I already have some plans to fix it on mine. I have had some stupid ideas since early in the gaming button discussions, I just need to figure out what would work best, and how not to make it too much of a mess. My basic idea at present is to use GB* buttons (I already have parts to work with on hand), and hacked up silicone with the carbon pads if needed, to give it the correct feel and function. I know I will need to mess around with the case to get that to work, but I will need to see how much space I have to work with. I already anticipate cutting and epoxy, or something of the sort. I wouldn't mess with the 2 tiny buttons, and if I am lucky they won't get in the way.

Best case scenario is the keymat buttons will feel fine, so all of my thinking about this will have been a bit of a waste.

I remember ED mentioned @Askarus was hitting the little buttons by accident, but that was an issue of clearance (and why he is getting the bigger buttons made a little taller). Since we all have different preferences I don't know that one person's opinion will tell us if they feel good enough for others/most.

@EvilDragon with the prototypes still being assembled, is it too late to tweak the height of the keys and gaming buttons if it turns out they still aren't optimal? I ask because you mentioned the three different materials that will be tested for feel. Wait, are these keycap materials or the silicone that you are trying out?

Kinda similar for me. Only I might like to have an RJ45 socket for wired network....
BUT I surely want it in the docking station (over USB3? is that possible and faster than over USB 2.0?)

8. Preorders!

My current plan is to start the preordering May 1st.
It will most probably be 290 EUR (same as the pre-preorder), the rest doesn't need to be paid before the unit is in stock.
And yes, by that, you can choose when you want to get it. It'll ship once the payment is there.

I'm not a fan of the lower preorder price. On Youtube there has already been confusion about the price of the pre-preorders. Some people thought 290€ would be the full price for the pyra. Please make it absolutely clear and easy to understand for everyone what the final price will be!

Several people already asked here but I'll do it again, if the pre-orders go online 1st of May is there any action required by the pre-pre-orderers?
I'm a pre pre orderer too and I'm not sure do I need to do anything for the next round of orders, can we pay the remainder of the cost if the prices have been finalised?

Is there any time limit for this Pre-order?

Under which conditions are you going to start the first batch? I mean, are you going to launch the first batch as soon as you have enough Pre-order for it, or are you going to wait to have more?

You still need to figure out what to do about the cell module, right?

As its reads, Parts will be ordered when enough preeorders are Taken, so there shouldnd be a timelimit,
Could be there are 500 the firstday, could be 1000,
200 are allready taken because the Preepreeorders..

As a pre-pre-order, all you need to do is order the unit you want and use the pre-pre-order voucher as payment.

There's no hurry for you, as you guys already reserved your unit :)
Thanks also for the clarification, I wasn't sure if the pre pre-orders were to be included in this new round of orders, I'm looking forward to finalising my Pyra choice real soon!
