SONY PlayStation Vita (PS Vita)

So now that everyone's had their Vita's for a week or two, what all games did everyone end up with? Might be fun if we matched up to play games like wipeout and stuff. :)

I've got:

  • Super Stardust Delta
  • Mutant Blobs Attack
  • Wipeout 2048
  • Rayman origins
  • Touch My Katamari

And my friend is trying to talk me into getting Hustle Kings. Seems like a cool deal, it's $10, and you get the PS3 version along with it. Plus, the multiplayer is asynchronous like words with friends or frozen synapse, so you don't have to be online at the same time to play. Hope to see more games like that. :D

Anyway, my PSN name is hoop-de-la-hoop.

I picked up Hot Shots Golf, Uncharted, and Wipeout 2048. I'd love to play online with you folks, but my internet connection blows. :(

I played Uncharted for the first time last night, and while the graphics are great, I gotta say... the controls are HORRIBLE. I can't believe how many things they made touch-only. The system's not exactly the easiest thing to hold with one hand without touching the back touch panel. I really hope this isn't a trend, because I'm not sure I could put up with it for every game I buy. The analog sticks feel overly sensitive, too. Calibration thing, perhaps?

Hot Shots is pretty fun tho. Has its own issues, with menu items again being touch-only, and some other things like no options screen (seriously! what's up with that?).

Wipeout hasn't arrived yet. I'm hoping this will be the system's redeeming title with me, since I'm not a huge fan of Hot Shots (think I prefer Pangya, which is similar but has a more character-centric slant).

You won't be disappointed with Wipeout - it's awesome. :) You should also check out Super Stardust Delta - probably the best value so far since it's only $10.

You know what? I think I'll do that right now! I'm surprised I have no interest in starting Uncharted up again, and getting beat by the same golfer 4 times in a row is no fun after 9 holes + 2 or 3 sudden death rounds. :p

Edit: WELL! seems I caught PSN during their scheduled 15 hour down time for maintenance! Oh well, looks like I might have to wait till tomorrow to try SSD. Played a little more Uncharted and I can firmly say now that the controls really are horrible. Is this what next gen 3D gaming is supposed to be like? Running into walls and getting killed by enemies you can't aim at quick enough? Kinda makes me wonder what the console versions were like.

Alrighty, a few weeks in, and my Vita has been played non stop(not counting my time with Pandora of course/to many new emu updates in the last few weeks). I was playing Resident Evil 3DS up to release, and I haven't went back yet. I guess I should finish that up, uh?

I got 3 Vita games at Amazon, so I could take advantage of the buy 2 get 1 free offer(Uncharted, Rayman, and Hot Shots). 3 games for about 30 bucks a piece, not to bad right? I also got Mutant Blob, and Escape Plan off of PSN(along with the 3 AR games, but I haven't really played those much).

I would say Uncharted has been my favorite so far, and I would give it a 9/10 so far. It is really better than I was expecting after many of the reviews I read before hand. The DS has been a major part of my life for 4-5 years, so touch controls is nothing new for me. There have only been a few times when I thought they where out of place, but for the most part I think they add to the experiance. Now I have played part 1 & 2 on the PS3, and I'm currently playing part 3 along side GA, and I have always enjoyed the series.

GA doesn't have the HUGE set pieces of part 2 or 3, but it offers a greater "Treasure Hunter" experiance than any of the console games and just sticks to the basics. It really plays to the Vita's strengths IMO. This is really just a more refined and compacted version of the series, just what a handheld game should offer.

Now on to Rayman(I nevered cared much for any games in the series). I originally downloaded the origins demo for my 360, and never completed it. The game just didn't hit any nerves for me, but the reviews where so good, I decided to try it on my Wii(it's modded, so it was technically a free run at the full game). Still, didn't do anything for me, plus the drop in graphics didn't help. So now we get to the Vita. Many more glowing reviews, and I just had to give it one last try. I have now been playing it the last 2 days straight. It is a very solid platformer, and it seems to get better the more you play. I would currently give it a solid 8/10. This may go up, but I'm currently only about 20% in, so I havn't done much in the overall scheme of things.

My last retail purchase is Hot Shots, and for anyone whos has played this game before, this is nothing new. Just a very solid over the top golfing experiance. I would rate this 8/10. Very solid, but nothing new in the games history really.

Mutant Blob is very good fun, but like many of the current gen download titles, the difficulty seems to ramp up quick, and borders on fun/hair pulling moments. 20 years ago this kind of game would have always been welcome, but now I barely get time to play games, and fighting thru boards over and over again, just gets old. I do currently find it fun and worth the price. 8/10.

Escape Plan is very good, and more my cup of tea. Now many of the reviews that have slammed this game due to poor touch screen controls are part right. The touch controls are for the most part spot on, but can be very hard to use properly when there is so much going on at one time, and having to use the rear as well, just makes for hassles at times. A combination of point and click along with touch screen would have worked better overall. A solid 8/10.

Now I have not finished any of the above mentioned games, so these scores may go up or down upon completion of each title.

My original Vita unit was defective, but my replacement works perfectly, and makes the Vita a much better experiance when I don't have to deal with screen touches that I didn't make. XMB was cool, and I find it to be the best of any of my current gaming machines(DS,3DS,360, ipod touch), but the new menus and operating system of the VIta is rock solid, and I'm really enjoying it. The Vita just blows the 3DS away in regards to functionallity. It is lighting fast and just works.

Sony is fore sure trying to go the smart phone route, but it is also gear around gaming which I find very cool. This is another area where many have complained, but I find it unfounded. Now having to use touch screen for everything, is a little overkill in my opinion, but that can be changed or improved thru future FW updates.

Overall I would rate the Vita at 9/10. The screen is gorgous, and the anolog sticks work great. The speakers could be better, and even with headphones I found them to be a little on the low side. I can play the vita for hours with no cramps, where the 3DS starts to hurt within 5-10 minutes. Bigger is better here for sure. Well these where just some quick thoughts on my first week Vita experiance. 250 is a bargin for such a kick as piece of kit, and just like my Pandora, I would have gladly paid more, but I'm happy I got both for cheap, as my funds are currently pretty tight.

If anyone has any specific question, Please feel free to ask.

Chris

I just saw this information myself. This was going to be my third PSN title, and it still is, it's just FREE now! Now I can get Journy next week with the saved funds. Thank You Sony and Scion, the extra wait over the UK was worth it.

Edit:This is also the 1st or 2nd highest rated Vita game so far. Win/Win!

Saw this this morning - way cool! I was planning on buying this anyway. :) The offer only gives you the vita version, where originally if you bought the vita version, you'd get the PS3 version for free. Oh well, I probably wouldn't have played it much (if at all) on the PS3 anyway. :)
Same here! Was looking forward to the PS3 as a bonus, but I doubt I would ever play it, unless size becomes an issue on the Vita. So not getting it, is not really a big deal. Great game at a great price, AWESOME!

Chris

Nice reviews, Jumpman. Seems we're on different sides of the page with the controls on Uncharted tho, eh?

The free game sounds nice, too!

Bought Super Stardust Delta last night, and it's now my favorite Vita game (whodathunk the cheapest game would be the most fun?). I've started to notice I'm having difficulty holding the console while in bed while lying on my back, which kinda makes things a little bit of a bummer. I'm used to playing games before I fall asleep, but with the touch panel on the back controlling a lot of games I find it difficult to hold. Sitting upright isn't too bad, but it's still difficult to hold. Hopefully this is something they'll figure out by the time Vita v.2 comes out.

Wipeout just arrived. Gonna go try that out now.

Edit: Oh my God, I think this version of Wipeout is possibly the best looking, best sounding version I've ever seen... and it's on a portable!

I'm no super fan of touch controls, but I would rather have them forced on me rather than forced motion controls. I was playing Donkey Kong Courty Returns on Wii, and as much as I loved the game, I HATED how I had to use motion controls for basic functions that used the SNES controller 10 years earlier(Total BULLSHIT). So I gave up on that game mid way thru. If given the choice, I would prefer they give you the option for differant control methods. I don't know why controls are so cut and dry now a days.

So my liking of touch controls in GA are more about the lesser of 2 evils, than me really liking them. If I don't have to sweat, are throw my arms around like I'm having a seizure, I'll take it any day.

Super Stardust is awesome, as I own the PSP and PS3 versions, and I'm sure this is even better, but I never play my current copys much, so I decided to skip this version, but I know it rocks as all the reviews have been beyond great.

Wipeout is another great game, and it looks beyond stellar on the Vita(maybe the best graphics I've seen so far). This was the only other game I considered at launch, but racing games normally run out of steam very quickly for me, so I went with Hot Shots, but I'll probably get Wipeout when it has a price drop or I can get it cheap.

So far ive only got shinobido 2 which is pretty decent.Gravity rush and the new resistance game is what i have my eye on also.I like the controls though the back touchpad has to be deactivated for shinobido as it controls the ninja rope and your fingers keep touching the pad by accident. The ninja rope can be used with the physical buttons too fortunately.

Glad you're liking Wipeout and SSD. :)

I've been playing Hustle Kings with a friend of mine online, it's pretty fun! Lots of multiplayer options (you can do both real-time and asynchronous). I decided to grab it, since I'll be getting Motorstorm RC for free. :D

Ive no Vita... but ive Wipeout 2048 HD on the PS3 and its a great game, love it

Hows that touch panel on the back of the Vita serving you, had much use of it on your games yet?

Escape Plan is the only game I own that really puts it to use(madatory), but imagine a touch screen game where you have to try and control it from the back of your monitor? Sometimes it's like trying to play a game in the dark at times. Uncharted makes better use of it, as it can be used to zoom your camera and gun site in and out, and also to help climb ropes, but it is never required like it is in Escape Plan.

It's novel, but so far no developers have really put it to great use yet. I heard Little Deviants makes good use of it, but most reviews claim that game is a glorified tech demo, so that is to be expected.

So, it's nice to have as you have the room on the back, so why not put that area to use, but thus far, not really great. When the DS first came to the market, there wasn't many games to use the front touchscreen to well, as game designers just never really used the tech before. Then Kirby Canvas came along and showed that a game could use all touch and be good. I'm not sure how good the rear touch space will ever be, since you can never see where your touch is actually going, but I'm sure within the next few years, it will be put to better use.

Chris

Yeah im sure its just a matter of time and as you say, devs getting creative with the tech.

Just had a little read of that Little Deviants game on IGN, that looks my kind of mini-game as it goes.

I can see the back touch panel working pretty well for zooming, be it on a map or the view of sniper sight.

Time will tell eh, I'll have to pop in the local Gamestation and have a little go on one of these Vitas

Hows that touch panel on the back of the Vita serving you, had much use of it on your games yet?

It's hit and miss so far (sometimes literally, since you can't see where your fingers are!). The games that make better use of it seem to use it in a more gesture-based way. For example, in the Unit 13 demo, you can swipe left or right to change which shoulder the camera hovers above. The ones that make the worst use of it trigger some action simply by touching it (Super Stardust Delta being a good (or bad...) example of this. Thankfully playing it in "Pure" mode gets rid of this.).

I'm not a fan of the rear touch panel. In all the games I own that use it, they all seem like its use is dictated by the fact that it's there at all. Not to mention it makes things difficult in the games that use it for critical things, since I have difficulty holding the unit without touching the panel.

In Super Stardust Delta, it's used to activate a black hole bomb weapon by default. I set it off by accident twice before turning the back option off. There are enough buttons on it to accommodate every weapon, so it baffles me why they don't just set them to buttons by default, and they don't even allow you to use the triangle button. There's a mini-game where you need to "pinch" enemies to kill them by touching the front and back at the same time, but I haven't tried this yet.

In Uncharted, as mentioned above, it's for zooming and such, which isn't too bad, the rest of the things it's used for seem like gimmicks and no more.

Hot Shots Golf uses it to gauge distance on the course, though I've heard it's supposed to also set the club for that distance. Haven't had that work for me, so maybe I read wrong or something.

Wipeout doesn't seem to use it at all, unless it's doubling up on an already-enabled feature and I haven't figured out which one yet.

Overall, it seems like a gimmick at this point, and I don't like the forced nature of it (front or back). A lot of places the touch screens are used would have felt more natural with buttons. I'm not a fan of having to take my hands off the buttons to do things, and the unit isn't exactly a lightweight. Good thing I have a wrist strap on it!

I almost wonder if developers don't feel a lot of pressure from Sony to use all the features in SOME capacity. We've seen this with other companies in the past, too: Nintendo with the touch screen on DS, or motion controls on Wii. Microsoft is starting to do it with the Kinect (though obviously making that optional since not every Xbox 360 owner has a Kinect).
