SONY PlayStation Vita (PS Vita)

Awesome pic Sony. I can't wait!

I already ordered my carry case and screen protector from playasia, and I'm planning to pay my unit off withing the next weeks. I decided against getting the prerelease bundle package here in the states(a week early release package), as I really don't see the value, or care for the packed in game.

I'm currently only planning on picking up Uncharted and a 8gb card. I may get a few other games down the line, as hot shots is looking cool, along with wipeout.

I'm so excited for the Vita, I can't stand it. :D I've been setting aside money for it, and hope to get the system (Wifi-only), a 32GB card, and a couple games (Wipeout and Super Star Dust, probably).

When's the review coming, SONY? ;)

hmm... looks like it's psp emulator hacked so will only run at the psp hardware level of performance (i'm guesing)

That may not be exactly true.

If the PSP emulator on Vita is anything like the PSP emulators for PC it won't be making any attempt to regulate the number of cycles executed in a frame. Instead the frame signals and threading and whatever will happen in real time, and the emulated code will run as fast as it can. At least until it goes to sleep.

If it DOES make any attempt to regulate emulated CPU speed then it probably won't be remotely accurate, and if Sony is trying to err on the side of compatibility they'll be very conservative in how much they limit the speed. So that it'll still generally allow more cycles per second than a real PSP. Very different situation from DSi that runs in a mode where the hardware is like a DS.

On the flip side, there's still going to be some overhead in emulating the CPU (and everything else) and it'll often be huge. So code ran this way will still be a lot slower than native code.

i hope you know that the 32gb cards cost a staggering $120

Yeah, it's a little ridiculous. :\ The alternative would be to buy a smaller one and wait quite a while for prices to come down. Even after they come down, I'd be out the price of the smaller one plus the then-cheaper bigger one. And I hate carrying multiple cards, so I'll probably just pony up the money for the 32GB, like the early-adopter sucker that I am. :D

i wouldnt be surprised if a microsdhc to sony-fuck-me-in-the-ass-vita-memory-card adapter wont come out early in vitas lifetime. i know it took the psp like 4-5 years for this to happen, but i can easily see china supplying this demand early on

MS Pro Duo was already a ridiculously expensive format, I just kind of assumed that's what everyone was talking about. Sorry, mySony's (the company) mistake.

oh.. so the emulator is all software no hardware? I guess I was assuming (falsely) that they were using backwards hardware compatibility like the PS2 and 3 did and ultimately phased out with newer hardware revisions.

I can only imagine homebrew software emulating N64 hardware ran on software emulating PSP hardware ran on a mobile device would leave a lot of overhead.

That's good to know that this is probally software emulator though and has my hopes up, that the emulator is already done for ARM based systems and might find it's way to other "play station certified" devices soon-ish... a while back I heard that the Xperia Play was susposed to have PSP games ported to it through it's play station market ... but if it's a full on emulator like they did with the PS1 on the Xperia Play (and hacked to run other standalone PS1 games soon thereafter... great compatibility and speed btw) that would be just awesome and a big score in the android emulation scene.... but unless we see a Xperia Play 2 I'm not sure the "playstation" part of sony will bother porting the PSP emulator over.

we'll see.... but I really hope they get a userland or even kernel exploit going on the vita... the hardware does look comfortable and the specs look pretty beefy for a handheld.

I was 100% behind Sony and the Vita, until I found out about this new and expensive format. I thought they should have at least included a 2-4gb card, so at least you can function straight out the box. I know Sony is trying to deliver a power house of a system to the masses for cheap, but several launch games won't even run without a new memory card.

I just find this to be bad business. WOW, the system is 250, but only if you want to browse the web, and run whatever apps are included. So the average consumer now needs to spend at least 20-30 extra dollars just to get going and play games.

Hell, even Nintendo gave a 2gb card to get 3DS users started. WTF!, Sony! At least the Vita kicks ass, otherwise I would tell them to go "F" themselves. :p

I previously lent out my PS Vita (Wi-Fi only model) to someone, meaning I will be letting someone else do the preview write-up instead, as I have limited time in my busty life...my PS Vita Bogan Review will have to wait a little while longer now.

Anyway, I've got my Vita back now (professional preview will be finished next week), so just moments ago I took these crappy shots.

I took these shots about 20 mins ago.

You have way too many Hannah Montana PSPs, I advise you burn them immediately :p

EDIT: Is that second one the e1000?

Actually I don't really know that definitively, I just assumed it because PSP's cores were pretty big. Having the hardware on board would probably be a big additional cost, and they'd really need the full main CPU core (MIPS32 + Allegrex) and the GPU, and probably the eDRAM.. could get away with not having the second core I guess.

I just figured since Sony was moving away from hardware compatibility, like with later PS3 models and PSP's PS1 support, that Vita wouldn't have it.. but I could be wrong.

Could probably find out if there are big glitches/incompatibilities, or maybe with certain speed tests.
