SONY PlayStation Vita (PS Vita)

Killer games exclusive to the vita and not released on say ps3 or the psn network is whats important too. Motorstorm rc will be free to download on the psn network if you purchase the vita version. Why buy a vita if the games are going to be on the psn network or later released on disk on ps3. This sort of thing happened to some degree on the psp.If the game can only be played on vita then you have to buy a vita to play it. Still i will get a vita when i can afford it as the 3ds is a complete letdown in my opinion.

I cancelled my Vita import.

I just know I won't use it, I'm pretty happy with Android/iOS games.

What really damaged PSP sales is that it was a piece of crap console with shitty controls, a missing analogue stick and a disc format so unfathomably stupid that most people couldn't remove their palm from their face long enough to play it.

I own a PSP and must admit that it has a few good games, but it was a terrible console that managed to get worse when the "Go" landed.

Not only that, but Sony's endless war against pirates made it a little frustrating for consumers, too, of you buy a game every now and then you'd constantly find it installing a new OS version before it could play... Argh!

It isn't even much good as an emulation platform, to be honest. I think: abject failure best describes it as a platform, no matter what the sales may have been like. A precious few excellent games saved it from complete obsolescence, though.

Wow, you really have it in for the thing. I don't think anyone's qualification for "abject failure" should be based entirely on your opinions instead of sales.. And I disagree with you, I doubt controls damaged the sales like you think. It was merely an uphill battle against Nintendo, and Sony pulled through quite well compared to all who tried before, especially later on and especially in the Japanese market. That's no small feat, but sadly the prospects aren't too good that they'll repeat even that level of success this time around.

The main controls (ie, dpad + face buttons) on the 2000/3000 models are generally regarded to be acceptable, and even on the 1000 the d-pad was quite good with a little bit of cheap modding. Compare with the DS models, the d-pad isn't that great there either. Yeah, maybe in 2012 it's not a very impressive emulation platform but in 2006 it blew everything else out of the water. Especially before GP2X was out, and if you really want to talk about shitty controls..

UMDs sucked, but the alternative in late 2004 wouldn't have been pretty either. Solid state storage just didn't have a good enough capacity/cost ratio yet. Fortunately things are a lot better now. Everyone agrees Go was no good but that doesn't take away from the other PSPs. Same way GBMicro doesn't take away from the other GBAs that came before it (yeah yeah, I know a lot of people liked it but from a sales POV it wasn't impressive)

My biggest beef with the PSP Vita is going to be the game buttons. Having looked at the PCB online, I see it has those crappy little dome switches. The original NDS did that and I don't like it. I guess we shall see on Feb. 22. :)

Gadgetoid youve got to be kidding me? PSP brought emulation to the masses and had a slew of brilliant emulators cps1,2 neogeo snes megadrive i could go on and on shit controls? it was the first handheld with a decent analog stick and dpad yes the 1000's dpad was not the best but simple modding sorted that and it had a brilliant range of hombrew games droplets is still as good today as 5 years ago and the specs at the time were mindblowing for a handheld console.

a decent analog stick

Woaaaah... woaaaaah! Let's rain in and get back to reality here. Seriously? The Tapwave Zodiac had a better analogue stick than the PSP, and it wasn't even analogue, ha!

I'm not belittling the excellent software that people put together for the PSP, but the whole custom firmware scene was a horrendous mess. Sony's constant battle meant that consistently being able to play retail games in addition to having your PSP modded for emulation wasn't exactly easy. Their constant releasing of new firmware and demanding that games used it is basically what made most modded users simply turn to piracy; it was easier.

I literally got discs in the post to review, and ended up having to download the game instead of playing it from the ACTUAL UMD THAT I OWNED!

Clue's in the name :D
Point taken but still stand by my views on the psp, The psp opened homebrew to the masses and im sure homebrew wouldnt be where it is today without the psp yes sonys firmware updates were a pain but i only ever bought 5 commercial games for the psp (lumines, both god of wars, gradius collection and daxter ) commercial games never interest me these days same games different coat of paint thats how the psp changed it for me all these old school games are the best thing for on the go gaming wish someone would port droplets to the pandora.

same games different coat of paint

Ain't that the truth!

In many cases it's not even judgement clouded by nostalgia; old games are generally better! Perhaps because they're simpler; you don't need a degree to play the chuffing things, just pure unadulterated skill.... actually, maybe there's a little dash of brute determination in there, too.

Sadly, I think you'll find most people CF'd the PSP to play pirated retail games... that may have been a bit of a trojan horse to get emulation under their noses, but I don't believe the PSP was that big a driver.

Can't wait to see what happens on the Vita in terms of custom firmware... it could potentially be an emulation powerhouse. That said there are a few new-coat-of-paint games I wouldn't mind having in a portable form.

For me its always been about Mame this is the biggest treasure chest for nostalgia the emulation community wouldnt be the same without it unfortunatelly my I7 struggles with alot of games so im not holding my breath there.

I love my PSP. I just put CFW on it last year, so I was kinda of late to the party, but I use it all the time. I personally only use it for current games. I see no need to run emulation, as I have a Pandora

It's funny, as I remember when the PSP was released here in the states, and I would go in to Gamestop and see all the traded in PHAT DS's, and I thought, WOW the DS is over all ready. Then slowly over the next few years, I would start to see less DS's in the case, and more and more PSP's.

At that point, any and all original games where pretty much gone on the PSP. Sony has recently admitted that they all but quite doing anything for the PSP due to PS3 developement. I agree with the comments made above that this was the first handheld in history to give Nintendo a run for their money. Sadly Sony threw in the towel a little early, as I feel the PSP could have done better over time, but I guess we'll never really know.

I'm really looking forward to the Vita, and I hope Sony gives it the support and advertising that it deserves, but sometimes these corporations can be clueless when it comes to what should and needs to be done.

Sadly its the same old story piracy destroyed the psp comercially as far as software is concerned maybe if companies would take a different approach as far as homebrew and emulation is concerned it could be good for all concerned hell half the reason hackers target systems like this is just to prove its possible take that away and what other reason do they have its about time companies like sony and nintendo embraced the homebrew community rather than oppose it.

Well, before I put CFW on my unit, I had a collection of 50-100 UMD's that I personally bought(an exception to the rule I'm sure). My main reason for the CFW was to improve the systems overall performance(swapping UMD's sucked, and load times are terrible). I personally don't believe piracy killed the PSP. Almost every handheld and console in the last 2 previous generations had piracy on a global scale, but the PSP is the only one to claim it didn't do well because of this. pricay has been an issue since the NES days, so this is nothing new. PS1 was just about the easiest ever, and it sold very well in spite of this, why? Because it had great games and great support as Sony had much to prove to Nintendo.

I find it easier to priate games on the DS, and it is the greatest selling handheld/console EVER. Why did piracy not kill the DS? I personally don't see the argument, but I'm sure there are facts to support all sides. Out of 5-6 of my friends who own a PSP, I'm the only one who put custom CFW on it. The reason they all stopped playing their units was due to lack of interest, and lack of proper support from Sony and 3rd parties, Nothing more, nothing less.

If Vita fails, it will be due to the same reasons, at least IMO.

Chris

I don't think you're looking at it on the same scale as sony is... even within your circle of friends you guys are probably still the minority.... like my friends. all of them were pirating and flashing cfw left and right... it's just who you hang out with maybe?

I'm sure sony can see from the number of consoles sold and still being sold vs number of games sold that people were buying the shit out of the consoles, but game sales were bad. I'm sure they know the ratio between consoles:games... the device was a success as long as they weren't losing money per console, the games sold on the other hand... ehh... not so much...

I thought a lot of the games were good and most worth paying for... but the temptation to just borrow a game from a friend for 5 min and just rip it to your memory stick... to ask to "try" a game at a used game store (my personal favorite method).... way too tempting if you ask me.

I think the software distrobution of the vita is the right way to go... ditial downloads are the future... regardless of what old school games prefer... having to option to never lose or damage the physical media of your game... it always exists on "the cloud" being able to buy any game from your couch... as long as price it reasonably it's a better option IMO. One thing that actually got me about the PSP was you sometimes couldn't find certian titles... lots of stores didn't stock the psp catalog very well due to game sales (seems self defeating if you ask me) but sometimes the ony way to find a certian game litterally was to download a pirated copy... which is sad

A coworker made a good argument that piracy will never go away. Even if it did, the number of polished cheap and free indie titles is ever increasing. The market is shifting such that people no longer pay for a game in order to get that game, they pay for it because they want you to survive long enough to make another one.

By making things more difficult, they are only alienating their customers. I didn't buy Spore because of stupid DRM and I know I'm not the only one, and in the end it didn't matter: pirates hacked it before it was out. EA lost at least one sale trying and failing to fight piracy, I doubt they gained a single sale as a result.

I'm strongly debating not getting Mass Effect 3 for the same reason, but it's a lot more difficult because of how involved I am with the first two. And I place a wager that whatever anti-piracy measure they put on Mass Effect 3 will not stop piracy and will not increase sales. How is that right? I am a customer perfectly willing to give them money if they stop jerking me around and making me run their crappy distribution system, while pirates who have no desire to pay for the game will be free to play it, all because the IDEA that someone would dare to play the game without paying for it is bad and they think (wrongfully) that they can change it.

I know, I know, preaching to the choir, eh?

I never really felt it was about making piracy go away, and I don't think any companies think so either. It's about decreasing the amount of piracy, but most importantly it's about shifting the availability of piracy. If you can make the pirate copies take 2 months after release instead of 1 week before release then it can make a big difference. I don't really think there's anything wrong with the classic copy protection techniques, like in PS1 games, where legitimate buyers notice nothing at all.. but of course they can go too far these days and really annoy people. At some point you have to consider that negative impact too.

That's exactly what I was talking about, the "go too far and now you're hindering me, the legitimate customer". I have no objection to halting the casual pirate, but they keep upping the stakes trying to halt the Brand Name pirate, and innocent customers are getting caught in the crossfire.

If it hinders piracy by 2 months then maybe it might be worth it to lose a few customers and recover them from people who would have pirated if they could have but didn't want to wait, but I've seen far more DRM schemes get in my way and still have pirate releases within days of the official release (if not before) than not. On the other hand, that's heavily biased because the games I tend to hear about are highly publicized, right down to the piracy figures.
