You didn't need software to transfer files from the PC to the PSP. The Vita feels like a step forward in a lot of places, but a step backwards in others. While I'm not certain I'd buy the next Vita version, I'm hoping they'll at least address the cramped controls.
Having to use software for transfers would be my only real complaint of the Vita, and if I had to use it on a regular basis, I would have given the Vita a lower score due to it. It is broken on my Windows 7 PC, and I can only use it thru my Windows Vista laptop.
I can't stand any device where this is standard, and this is the reason I would never but another Aplle device again(itunes sucks much ass on windows). Thankfully, I don't use music or videos on my gaming devices(expept my Pandora on rare occasions), so this isn't a real problem for my Vita usage, but I do agree it is a HUGE step backwards, but it was no suprise considering the lockdown tactics against piracy.
I loved my PSP 2000, and I still use it from time to time. It was a wonderful device, and my only real complaint with that device was the lack of a second analog stick(not a huge deal for me personally), and the UMD format. Once I hacked my unit, it made it a much better device overall, as it allowed the PSP to be everything it could be and then some. The best part for me was no longer having to deal with the UMD's and getting improved battery life due to this improvement.
I have been a handheld gamer my whole life, and I started my journey back in the old Game & Watch and Mattel handheld years. I think I have owned almost every worthwhile handheld ever released, and the Vita is hands down my favorite of the bunch currently.
I think every unit ever released has had it pluses and minuses, but for me, the Vita has the most pluses thus far and the least minuses. So for that, I'm giving it my top honors, but in 5 years it may not live up to it's potential if great games and apps never see the light of day. So for the first few months it has been Awesome, but I may sing a differant tune in 5 years. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.
