Pyra news partially stale from the dragon's mouth

I'm still alive, but stuffed with work and I'm also fighting a bit with my health, but I'm not dead yet :)
1000 cases will ship to me next week, 550 mainboards have also been produced already. So yeah, moving along ;)
Hey ED - hope you're OK :)

Just wondering if the cases turned up last week, and if so, are they up to scratch?!
I'm interested in any tidbits of updated news you are willing and able to share (as I'm sure are others) :D

Still waiting "patiently" for my pre-pre-order!

I usually end up torrenting to get hd. Morally I think it is justified since I only torrent shows on those and I do pay for the HD services of both.
I thought, what you are getting via torrent you are sharing as well, at least during the time it needs to get it. ?

I have both amazon and netflix, but since my mobile devices are widevine l3, they only support SD.

Dunno if that falls under fair use legally though.

I'd say it falls under what's fair from a moral standpoint. Pretty sure it's not legal in Sweden, although some officials have said they won't chase down people occasionally downloading a movie or two because that would be a waste of police resources. There was also no record of people receiving settlement letters from the movie industry in Sweden last year. It appears that have simply given up now that one of the largest ISPs in Sweden (Bahnhof) basically said enough is enough and took a movie studio to court over sending invalid requests for subscriber information. Bahnhof won and since then they only share subscriber information with police following a valid court order, to the great annoyance of local police trying to sneak in requests without a court order.

You do, unless you turn off the upload, which I do.

This however is not fair from a moral standpoint. ;)

(Mods, please keep in mind this is a joke and I do not want to encourage unlawful activity.)

In my experience, it's very rare that anyone is feeding off your download when you're downloading it. Though my main experience of torrenting was during uknova's glory years, where I was only torrenting stuff I could have recorded on my VCR. Maybe if you picked a newly ripped movie that might be more popular, or maybe the limited upload of my internet at the time was more significant in my troubles in maintaining a good looking ratio.

I just leave Transmission running as a daemon on my Debian server. You wouldn't believe the ratios I'm getting on my Linux ISOs (no seriously, they really are Linux ISOs). Distributing Linux distros makes me feel like I'm finally donating something useful back to the community besides random small code projects.

Some Years ago, i bought a Blue Ray Player, a Box of James Bond Movies, and another Movie on Blue Ray, and whe have a bunch of DVD, but i wouldnt want to rip the Disks to watch them on a Mobile Device like the Pyra.., also i have a 10 gig Dataplan, so watching Netflix even whitout WLAN wouldnt be a big issue for me..
And as long the dark parts of the Movie arend too dark, i wouldnt mind to have just SD..
Once i watched Game of Thrones in our Garden, and the Scenes in Winterfell wherend visible because they where too dark..

If you do decide ever to rip and transcode your discs for mobile viewing, Handbrake does a good job of tying everything together. And yeah even on old CRT TVs I was able to see DVD's lack of control of dark areas, and that's only got worse since moving to LCD TVs.

I fiddled around a bit with doing that on my prototype. Until we get a working H.264 codec, playing back my .mp4 files isn't going to work so well. As is it tries real hard to software decode, but it isn't exactly fluid about it.

I know that traditionally we've all craved news on hardware. Now I'm wishing for news on software (codec/drivers). Just so you know - the wishing for news part never ends.

@Confuzzled You learned that from a joke about a rabbi and a priest. ?
No. I think I learned it from an autobiography of someone who learned it at a university sometime before the Second World War. It involved a pair of male students at a bathing place where it was customary to bathe naked being surprised by a family known to them in a boat. The theological student preserved his modesty by covering his genitals, the student of logic preserved his anonymity by covering his face. The joke is probably older than that and can be adapted to a number of professions.
