Just a quick heads up

I only can speak for myself, but i believe that i make something against the Global Warming by using the Pyra as my Work PC instead of a Over Powered Gaming Computer whit Ray Tracing Graphics

The Pyra needs juice, but only 5 Volt 2 Ampere,
Also its quite Tiny, so i could even Transport it whit my Electrical Bycicle, or even a Non Electrical Kickboard or even by foot..

Whyle i can remember a Lan Party bevore the Displays where LED, where the Monitor was much heavyer than the Tower ^^

your gas-powered car (and any non-renewable energy) doesn't just emit CO2 -- particulate matter is a major cause of early death. not to mention, sit in a closed garage with an ICE-powered car running for long enough, and you'll die.
CO₂ measures are not just for ICE cars. They're for everything. If other substances are the problem then we should focus on them and not distract ourselves with an innocent gas hoping that the real problems will disappear accidentally as side-effect.

capitalizm created a lot of things, but not linux. linux was borne of curiosity with a healthy dose of boredom.
As I read it Linux was created because Torvalds found Minix to be too limiting and the GNU in GNU/Linux was created mainly by Richard Stallman for the sake of ethics and freedom. Either way they're indeed about as far from capitalist as one can get.

We have solar panels and a battery so that we can still use electrical devices if we get cut off from the grid. If that happens then the Pyra would be handy because of it's low energy consumption. It would be nice if the Pyra can be underclocked for even more power saving.

Why did you automatically assume I meant CO2? I'm talking about the stuff that's making it hard to breathe in Beijing and such. All pollution.
I did not, that's why I asked. It was just a guess.

It's been locked since a couple of days after the US elections. We actually still have two US Senate races to go though, so we probably can't unlock it yet.
Seriously? Why? I would expect this to be the best time to have it open because now it's more relevant.

I could even recharge my Pyra whit my 6000 mah Powerbank i also carry, or the 26000 mah Powerbank i use on big journys..

whe plane also to put a Solar Panel on our Camping Mog, but first whe need to built this Camping Mog, and whe ditnt have the Unimog yet..

Wish I knew what it was like to go against the grain that hard.

It's pretty fun when you get used to it. I'm always finding out about/experiencing new things. I also get a kick out of finding out about stuff that most people have no idea exists, and if they did wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

Like e.g. Methane. It is not only considered to have a much worse effect on the climate per kg than CO2 but also disintegrates into CO2 within the atmosphere, and because it has a lesser density than air it even comes with an intuitive explanation of how it even got up there in the first place. I'm actually curious about that little detail: How does CO2, a gas that tends to pool on the ground because it is heavier than air, manage to get all the way up there by itself - everyone seems to take that for granted, am I missing some law of physics? I'd greatly appreciate if someone would be able to fill my gap.

I remember reading about an experiment some years ago about feeding cows a tiny amount of a certain seaweed, which was supposed to reduce the amount of methane within cow farts by inhibiting the chemical reaction that generates it in their bellies - and it was so incredibly effective that the scientists at first thought their instruments were broken. This is actually a very cheap and effective way to get a massive impact on climate change, and apparently it's slowly getting more attention.

Eh, I use Linux because it simply works better than Windows. If it was illegal to sell PCs bundled with an OS, and people had to actually choose one, more people would use things other than Windows. Of course you'd also get people who just ask for Windows. But since Linux is free, and Windows is over $100, I bet more people than you'd think would go for the free option. There's also things like ArcaOS that cost money but are cheaper than Windows.
Sadly, when bundled with a new PC, Windows 10 Professional just makes a difference of about 30€ to 40€.
It's a shame, because there are people who would switch if the price difference was higher.

Diffusion.

Diffusion.
You've got to go into more detail with that one, because I kind of have the impression that the whole scale and complexity of it simply does not make it applicable without further restrictions. In fact, common diffusion only works on very small scales, on larger scales convection/advection overrides the effects of diffusion - and that makes things complex. Too complex to model it accurately, which is why atmospheric modellers commonly treat the whole atmosphere as a singe big eddy for modelling atmoshperic mixing, which I would consider a flaw.

The full answer is of course a lot more complicated (everything always is) and I can't spend too much time explaining my understanding of it in detail (not an expert either), but this paper seems to answer your question more thoroughly, including matching measurements to the model presented:

Didn't read through the whole thing in detail (for the same reason), but I hope you find it informative.

in a science profession, years of lying will come back to bite you (people won't publish your work anymore). in industry, if you've lied, and bought yourself a few more years of blowing poisonous smoke into the air, your wallet's only gotten thicker.
Remember the 15 or so papers, payed by the tobacco industry, that said smoking was harmless (detrimental) for your health?
Well, there was a study from the "other side" actually where they gave such a high concentration of cigarette smoke that it did contain CO and less oxigen, so the lab-animals all died of suffocation, thus the report concluded smoking is "unhealthy". So you can't even trust the "good ones".

So anything 'imported' during the transition period (between 1 feb. 2020 and 31 dec. 2020 as UK has already left the EU) would be subject to customs clearance I guess.
I wouldn't mind to let UK cut the waiting line if that means that they pay less tax (I think there's only a few of them).

I don't see why it's worth arguing about the historic data w.r.t climate change. Half the world seems to be on fire, and the rest is underwater.
Because all other planets in the solar system are also heating up, so unless each one of them has a logical explanation, we turn to the common denominator: the sun.

can we keep climate-change related topics in the world news & politics thread? it's annoying to have to argue about this outside of that thread.
Petition to unlock the "world news & politics thread". Please repy in the "world news & politics thread"

Apologies for the derailment and please get back on topic.
Too late, too late. ;)

What kind of pollution? CO₂? CO₂ is an important substance that's excreted by animals and needed by plants
Not to mention volcanoes have been spewing out tons of it (and methane, and other pollution-related filth) for eons. Eruptions like Krakatoa alone put out several orders of magnitude more than what has been produced by humanity.

@szr not as much as people

Shure, a Vulcano can also cause global warming (And Pandora Delay), but this whole climate system is just too complex,
If not against the climate change, but for our own health I think whe should put the pollution down..

But as I have a Unimog, that’s drives whit up to 20 l Diesel \100 km, I don’t think I have to say something..

Send from something, i guess ^^

The above Krakatoa statement is false.

Snopes: Does a Single Volcanic Eruption Release as Much CO2 As All of Humanity Has to Date?

A more accurate rendering of Plimer’s claim would be something like “3500 Mount St Helens-scale volcanic ‘coughs’ in a single day might be able to produce as much CO2 as humans have added to the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels to date.” Such a headline would be unlikely to have the same effect as the original one, however.
Obviously, the geological evidence shows that volcanoes have been around for far longer than mankind - so on that basis, the total of all volcano emissions since the Earth's formation would indeed outweigh what humanity is producing and has produced, but is only because they have had a lot longer to do it in.

We probably all go against the grain in something. The average person does not exist. Either that or he's being held captive at The International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Paris.
Well, if you sum the number of Homo sapiens that have died over time and compare it with how many are alive today, the median Hom. sap. is dead.

Population Reference Bureau: How Many People Have Ever Lived on Earth?

Edited to correct a typo. bcause -> because

That's doubtful. If you die and your body decays then at some point you're not human anymore and thus get removed from the set of all humans. At that point you can also not contribute to the median anymore. Besides that, you'd still need to be median in all other aspects besides just being dead to truly be the median human.
