A few Colors and Packages (with a poll!)

Which packaging would you prefer?

  • The smaller one (with the battery below the Pyra)

  • The bigger one (with the battery and the Pyra at the same level)

One is gun-metal grey [...] but for my opinion, it would look better if it's darker.
All I can say is:
About the packaging, at the moment I tend towards the chocolate box because:
  • Things tend to look bigger on camera than they really are
  • I'm not going to throw either packaging away
Where will the boxes be produced (more specifically: what kind of transportation will be involved before the boxes arrive in Germany)?

Edit: Whom do I have to sell my soul to in order to be able to make a regular link to youtube that doesn't automatically get converted to an embedded video?

I keep forgetting to ask this: Is the purple case actually two tone, as it seems in the video and some of the pictures, or is that just due to lighting?

As I said elsewhere, the logo plate is tolerable, and with the right plastic color it could look really nice imo.

Stupid question that just crossed my mind: What happens when you plug both ends of the cable into the Pyra? I know it can't charge itself. I have never tried something like that, but it seems like the kind of thing someone might do, so I might as well be the person to ask.

I don't know what you meant, but the mental imagery of using either a computer mouse or a rodent to remove it is amusing.

That should've been knife... no idea what happened, maybe it's too late right now? :D

The boxes will be produced in Germany. The magnets will be implemented by disabled people, btw, so we're helping them a bit as well :)

This Gun Metal Case looks pretty cool, even if its not that dark it should be..
I cant see some shrinkingmarks yet, mybe because its too late in the night..
I ditnt wantet silver anymore because the Pandora, but this gun metal looks quite cool :)

Actually, it has two tones. That happens when the mold is not fully clean yet.
That's why you usually produce 50 - 100 pieces of plastic that you throw away after you changed the color.

We actually do that with the Pandora in the testing setup:
The USB Host is connected to the Mini USB and the SD Card slot 2 is set to mass storage mode.
When the Pandora can mount the mass storage device and access the SD Card, you know with one simple test that both USB Ports and the SD Card slot is working fine.

So you could i.e. access Pyras serial out if you connect the Micro USB Cable to the debug port to the USB port :)

I would be fine with either a "Dark Grey" or "Dark Red" color for the Pyra. I too like the small box design better than the larger one. I'm looking forward to recieving my Pyra. Also I have a question for ED? Have you been able to figure out how to incorporate 4gb of ram into the Pyra. I know that in the last email that was sent out, you weren't sure if it would be doable or not? Anyway keep up the good work and I look forward to the next news-post. :)

After i saw the video: the scratch resistence is something i find verry usefull because i usaly put my pandora in a Poket of my workpants, in case i need it or not..
So its now looks like this:

So Pyra should look much better after work..

How good dos the hinge work??
It is thighter than on the pandora, or because the prototyph state its still the same?? (My Pandora lid move a bit up and down if the open device gets some move..)

Is it bad of me to want that purple one and put a majora's mask decal on it?
On a different note the cases look awsome even with them not being final.

These look great! I'm so glad dark grays are being considered. I'm less bothered about the exact final shade, I think most anything will look pretty good. I kind of agree that the "gunmetal" would look better darker, but even so I'm surprised by how much I like it as it is - reminds me of an 80s microcomputer, with an almost quasi-military look. The orange on the keyboard makes a nice contrast. The texture looks lovely.

Can't wait to see dark red!

Did you see the video? I especially mentioned the reflections there.
The cases are not metallic. They are actually normal matte plastic. The only reflections you see are from the very fine, smoothly sanded case.

I did but with the name gunmetal and the slight metallic look in the video I got a bit worried. It must be frustrating to deal with everyones subjective opinions on colours, I didn't mean to add to the entropy.

Now it's your turn: Which packaging do you like better?
Great!

Color: The grey one looks better than the "pink" one. Maybe metal black will even better.

Packing: Does the package robust enough for international shipping? Please keep in mind that the China post service is terrible. A simple package is fine for post inside Germany, but definitely not enough for posts to China.

Glad to see an update on the Pyra, and that things are progressing nicely. It all looks fantastic.

That violet color is pretty wild.

Also, yeah, USB wall chargers are everywhere, so I don't see any problems with not including one.

I would be tempted to order a spare battery with my final Pyra order, if available. Basically so I don't have to pay the shipping costs to the USA twice, when I inevitably decide I want a second battery for it.

It also seems like folks always want to nitpick all the smallest details, which seems a bit unnecessary to me... This is gonna be an awesome device.

Thanks ED, I'm looking forward to the next news post!

Parkinson's law of triviality is C. Northcote Parkinson's 1957 argument that members of an organisation give disproportionate weight to trivial issues.[1] He observed that a committee whose job was to approve the plans for a nuclear power plant spent the majority of its time on discussions about relatively minor but easy-to-grasp issues, such as what materials to use for the staff bike-shed, while neglecting the proposed design of the plant itself, which is far more important but also a far more difficult and complex task.

The law has been applied to software development and other activities.[2] The term bike-shedding or the bike-shed effect was coined as a metaphor to illuminate the law of triviality...

Any chance of making the aluminum logo plate black? It just doesn't look good in silver, no matter what color it's paired with. And hopefully the cases will have a truly matte finish to them. Those photos make the Pyra look like a cheap Chinese toy for children. Especially that purple one. I love purple, but that hue just doesn't do it for me, though of course I know it's made for one person's preference.
