EpicGames Client ?? What do you think about it ?

Although not running windows as an OS either... so there is that.

Lately the free games story is starting to make some sense... we have still 1 (or 2 or 3) free games per week, but while in the past those were full-versions, now only the base game is free, and most of the time there are more then 5 or 6 DLCs.

The 2 games of this week are a PC conversion of 2 table top games, and well, both of them are full of DLCs for more pieces and backgrounds.

Next week there will be "Kingdome Come Deliverance", and the page is already showing 15 DLCs.

Hmm, is Tencent/Epic transforming regular games into freemium stuff, because that business model has proven to be profitable?

So, "Kingdome Come Deliverance" had some free HD packs too, listed as DLC, so I added them, but was not a smooth experience at all...

First of all the client still lacks a shopping list, so I had to do a checkout for every single entry, and second, at every checkout I had to manually reload the store page because happened every time some kind of infinite loading loop.

But well, I can't complain free xD

Rumors tells that the tomorrow "secret" free game will be "GTA 5"

I lost attraction for the GTA games after I played the 3... but if it's free I could give a try

Why would you want to do that? I thought GOG games were DRM free?
If there were ever a global financial crisis, companies started going bankrupt etc, then having DRM free games from GOG is great. Because you never know what happens to your games if these online services stop.
But I can imagine the free games are less of a priority because you can already play them and then you would buy other titles on GOG.
For me it's also a tiny hurdle if I have to buy a game twice, especially if the price on GOG is much higher then the summer-sale price from Steam for example.

Why would you want to do that? I thought GOG games were DRM free?

1) There are games that I will just play for one time, and if them are free, is better.
2) Once downloaded, with the client, all of the ones that I tried are actually DRM free... you just ZIP the game folder, put inside it a copy their registry keys (if the game need those), and you are done, you can "reinstall" the game when/where you want without the need of the client.
3) I don't have to "choose" between Epic and GOG... I can own a game from both stores without issues... But if on one of them I get a free game, I just take it.

The main issue for me is not for Epic in any way, because I think I'll never buy things on it, but it's STEAM VS GOG... and there is not JUST a DRM issue, but a whole set of points that have to be considered for every game in each store... price/functionalities/user-base/version/availability... but this is another story

Anyway, I still remember the times when I had a new single game every year... I had to choose wisely... reading reviews... asking for impressions... trying it a bit at the "physical" store... and in the BEST cases there was a playable demo in some magazine... (I played for a YEAR with the Duke 3D demo... and the one of Tomb Raider... before actually buy the games years later)...

Now is all gold... I don't even have to read reviews... I just get the game free...

It is GTA V indeed... and the traffic just destroyed their servers !!

Their twitter page is overflowing with comments

EDIT:

The site is still broken, but I got some parts of the pages visible, and seems that in 6 hours there will be ANOTHER "secret" FREE GAME UNLOCKED.

Also, from the page of GTA 5, I found this unexpected information:
The Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Edition includes the complete GTAV story, Grand Theft Auto Online and all existing gameplay upgrades and content. You’ll also get the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack, the fastest way to jumpstart your criminal empire in GTA Online.
It is completely free, with all the DLCs !!
Seems to me this is a way to insert a new player-base in the online version, because they will also gift some virtual cash for the game.

There is a requirement that is not clear anyway. I suppose it needs to be activated in some way.

I'll try again later

EDIT:

Got it, finally !! I'll find the time to play it in 2 Months !!

It'll fit nicely in my virtual shelf next to the unopened GTA IV.
If I can get the Epic Games Launcher to stop showing me the error 500 page in every possible language (so far I had Polish, Russian, English and French).

One of the errors I made at the beginning of this "Epic" adventure, was to think that issues happened because of the client... happened more then once that I was unable to access it, and I was constantly uninstalling/reinstalling it, without solving the issues... but at some point, I came to the conclusion that the client is really not so much more than a browser... and indeed, EVERY TIME I was unable to access my library, or the store from there, using a normal browser to go to their main site, showed that it was broken too...

Luckily, at least, it is not necessary to launch the games.

Steam > Epic Games store

Them have both good and bad things, it is difficult for me to tell who is better between the two, even considering all the "experience" of Steam... and maybe this last affirmation is a point for Epic

Steam has Steam Controller.
The only reason I play games on PC.
Controller support for any game even if it has none.

This is still both good and bad for me, it is indeed really useful for obvious reasons, but the remap is global for the system, while steam is running, so I always have to shutdown steam before starting any non-steam-game that uses the same device

This week FREE stuff:
BORDERLANDS: The Handsome Collection

includes EVERYTHING !!

BORDERLANDS + BORDERLANDS 2 + BORDERLANDS: The Pre-Sequel + ALL DLCs !!

includes EVERYTHING !!

BORDERLANDS + BORDERLANDS 2 + BORDERLANDS: The Pre-Sequel + ALL DLCs !!
I only see Borderlands 2, The Pre-Sequel and the DLCs in there, no Borderlands 1.
Also:
Testing Borderlands 2:

Opening Borderlands2.exe (*) in \Epic Games\Borderlands2\Binaries\Win32 results in a pop-up screen with the message "Epic must be running in order to launch Borderlands 2. Please restart Borderlands after starting the Epic client."
(*) with the Epic Launcher installed, but not launched
version number: 2.0.0 BN222 CL2140712 C (date: 28-5-2020)
---
Testing Borderlands The PreSequel:

Opening BorderlandsThePreSequel.exe (*) in Epic Games\BorderlandsThePreSequel\Binaries\Win32 results in the same pop-up screen, with a small difference: it mentions Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel instead of Borderlands 2 :p .
(*) ditto
version number: 2.0.0 BN96 CL2140713 C (date: 28-5-2020)

verdict: both got DRM.
