Update regarding the cases (and some other things)

@PCXT these are likely just quick samples straight out of the mold. Generally from what I remember from what was said during the Pandora case manufacturing, it takes a while to get the process going and the quality improves once the machine starts churning them out in bulk.

Nice cases.
I'm looking forward to crush some.
Not a bad test to see how much it would take to actually crush one. We haven't seen the crushed ones so I just wonder if they break more easily now then was imagined (I remember someone standing on a sample and hitting it with a hammer?).

Looks like I don't have to visit Greece after all.
Some pictures from today my contact made.
Most of the parts are still lying in water (to cool off), so he couldn't take pictures.

But here are some of the parts that are already out of the water, including the machines at work.
Beware of crappy smartphone quality :)

They're also trying out a different material tomorrow.

Can I get a case in Safety Yellow like the casing of the machine? That would be AWESOME.

Quick update: Those marks are the reasons they're trying a different material, as different materials behave differently.
More pictures hopefully tomorrow (my contact didn't find the time to visit them today).

I personally wouldn't mind if the case company can't fix the problems with the used material. It might be that the cases will break at this significant points some time, or - with some luck - it's just an optical issue. As long the case lasts for two years or more at the hinges it's ok. I would order a new one from ED once the case breaks. Maybe at this time there exists a revision No. 2 of the case which would give the Pyra even more value.

Does anybody know how much the Pyra-Case alone will cost?

I have to disagree with that. As much as I dislike how long the case is taking to get to production quality, I'd much rather see quality cases than something which will crack easily or look cheap. When showing off a unit the case is what will make the first impression, and I'm sure the Pandora's case didn't do it any favours in that regard. If people perceive the unit as being of low quality, they'll be much less willing to shell out hundreds of dollars (or Euro as the case may be) for it, and the case quality is the first thing anyone doing an unboxing video is going to be showing off.

I get your point and fully agree! First impression of a device is really important. After following this community for almost a year, the first impression isn't important for me anymore. I already got my "first impression" through the way the project is handled. I know the Pyra has it's qualities.

Imagine how awesome it would be if you could say to your fellas: "Yeah, looks cheap..." but then you throw your Pyra on the dirty floor and dance on it and it still doesn't have any cracks. :)

Cute, but honestly I'd rather have them marvelling at the build quality than have to be convinced of it. :p

FWIW, that wasn't a pyra part - that was a bulbous part (perhaps mounting/packing material) which I assume was significantly thicker than the Pyra can afford to be. The Pyra case should definitely be more sturdy than the Pandora's ABS? case, and besides design improvements should make it less likely to fail - mine's gone on the corner where I had to stress it to get the case apart, and on the back of the hinge where the Pandora has clips, making the side that receives the clips thinner. The Pyra will simply have a screw near the middle of the hinge keeping that all together.

Are you sure about that? The shoulder buttons don't work on those cases. ;)

As bad it it may sound, yeah I might. I really don't like black systems, and I would think pretty hard on taking a defective unit over a 100% working one that is black. LOL

Sorry, couldn't help it. :p

Some more update:

Apparently, the new material looks better and is less fingerprint-friendly :)
I will receive pictures tonight, my contact took them already and is on the way.

One more information:
These cases are still raw material, without any coating (so no anti-scratch-coating yet).
That coating will be added during mass production, but the molds need to be 100% finished then.

So the cases will not look as good as the mass produced ones, but they should be nice already.
Once I receive them and (hopefully) can confirm they're physically perfect, mass production can be planned.

For some reason I thought the anti-scratch stuff was added into the plastic. Is there a chance it could cause issues with fit during assembly?

I know a few people mentioned this already, but please no paint this time, even if there are some imperfections.

Well, in a way it IS added into the plastic, that's why you can't do it before the mold is finished.
Basically, it's not in the FULL plastic, as it would change the material flow and it wouldn't make sense having anti-scratch coating inside the plastic.

I can imagine it's being added during production while the plastic is cooling off.

That's something completely different, that was paint on top of finished plastic, not a coating.
We won't have any paint anywhere.

I'm confused, will it not be the outer coating that determines if the case is fingerprint friendly?
