Sydney Australia.

The city has gotten really bad over the last few years, have no idea why.  I just point blank make sure I am home before 12 because of too many drunken assholes out after then.  However this happened at 9pm.

As for the police they are kinda cracking down on it kinda not.  When the bouncers finished doing their heavy handed business and broke everything up they just let the guy who was randomly hitting people walk off.  There was a police station 50 metres away.
So much for the British convicts colony.

I wonder if this really affected the gene pool in Australia as much as people say.
We have a pretty bad drinking culture here and hell even I am a part of it.  Don't think it has anything to do with genes.

You go out and the entire point is to get smashed as possible. drinks will just keep flowing and flowing until quite literally you are an absolute mess.  I don't go out much these days for this reason as I just have no self control since after a few drinks you don't even register you are having too much and everyone shouts and buys rounds and not only is it expensive you lose track so quickly.  Another thing Australia has is there are quite a few steroid users who love going out in the city and as a guy who lifts and has a fair bit of testosterone I know just how aggressive and angry you can get.  Steroids from my observation amplifies this 10 fold and there is the expression roid rage over here.  So mix that with booze and a night out.  Then you have the lads who are just fuckwits and to top it off a lot of bouncers who just fuck with people for the hell of it you congregate them all in the one place and you have most of our cities night life.

I usually stay at home with my girlfriend or ask people around to my house and have some drinks at home but I have a 4 drink limit. Wish I could just not drink at all but I guess I am taking the lesser of evils.

What hinders you on simply not drinking? I didn't for many years now.

Dunno, it's a compulsion or due to boredom. I can't work it out myself. Mums a alcho dads a heavy drinker/alcho. However I am a pretty light drinker compared to most over here. Weekends only for me and I have limits.

I know a lot of people who get smashed every weekend and had a friend who went through 2 bottles of red every night at the minimum.

I don't understand why it should be so great to blur ones senses, lower ones IQ, weaken the short term memory and partially deactivating your self-control for a while.

Alcohol is a bigger problem than cannabis ever was although I don't like any drugs anyway.

Alcohol doesn't actually numb my emotions since they are pretty numb already but more enhances it somewhat perhaps that is by deactivating my self control somewhat.

Granted it also makes me an idiot but like I said that's why I have limits so I don't get too stupid, Weekends only and a 4 drink limit.  Mix that with just the entire drinking culture and you have a compulsion to drink.

Best answer I can really give.

Yeah that sucks about Robin Williams.  Even named his daughter Zelda what a champ.

It just goes to show that it doesn't matter how popular or successful you are this shit can hit anyone.

I was going to call my Daughter Zelda too, and part of my case for choosing it was that Robin had named his daughter that, so "wasn't that strange a name".

My mates and missus were not so aware of the game, and immediately thought of Zelda from Terrahawks, the old childrens program on telly.

...Didn't go with it in the end, still like it as a name though

Isn't Zelda a normal name in Spain for centuries?

Perhaps, I don't know.

I'm not from Spain though :)

It's not too popular over here, I've never met anyone called that. The Terrahawks was somewhat a cult show though, so that may have had some effect in its unpopularity?

In that show, if you don't know it, Zelda was a bit of a scary old witch type character. Nothing glamorous

Escapism, it blocks out your humdrum life for a while.
I'd prefer a good RPG anytime.
Or a good book.Books have been my drugs for years. :) I've got quite a lot of experience in selecting exactly the right book to influence my mood in the way I want or at least block my thoughts for a while.

I haven't got much contact with people who drink too much, but I have the impression it's really to escape and forget for a while, most of the time.

I just like books better because they don't damage my body (I might even increase my intelligence/education that way...). But they can really be as addicting as alcohol, I would guess.

Yes, books too.

I've read through quite a chunk of Projekt Gutenberg and Terry Prattchett and still am.

Atm I'm reading "Equal Rites".

Do long periods of reading in dim light cause damage to eyes?  I used to get told this, but I still do it.

Good choice. https://www.erowid.o...es_media2.shtml
I have some rather old books, some with weird stuff growing on/in them.  I do keep those away from most of the others unless I am referencing them.

Also, some of that information is questionable.  I highly doubt ergot had anything to do with the incidents in Salem MA a few centuries ago.

I blame Zeus myself, here he is up to his old tricks again.
But Zeus is not usually considered a trickster, and that doesn't really seem to be his kind of thing.

I think it makes more sense that they had a strict and oppressive environment and a handful of girls acting out.  They saw that people were eating up what they were doing, so they played it as long as they could.  It is rather unfortunate that people had to die, regardless of the reason, since it was all bullshit.  I am more fond of Grace Sherwood, since she fought back, and they didn't kill her. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Sherwood
