@Elw3 IMHO, there are materials/paints which gain character with wear and scratches, but there are also those, which just gain shittiness.
Exactly. An example of the good kind would be any unpainted Game Boy that has wear and smoothness where fingers and especially thumbs (around the buttons) have been on the case, with some scratches and dings. An example of the shitty would be...um, the silver or platinum cases of the Pandora. Sorry if I step on any toes with that. They look nice when new, but not so good once they get cracked, scratched or scraped.
Steampunk would only come into play if the case was wood and brass, or has pointless stuff all over it, as has become that fashion in the last decade or so. The above video probably shows that. Heavily worn wood and brass might be nice, but give me metal or fiberglass reinforced plastic and no paint or outer coating color and let me distress and age it through use.
That's not the way it seems ED's been describing it though. Maybe it's a language barrier thing, but he's used specific words to indicate that this other company can strictly make more in less, 2 weeks vs "a lot faster", which reads to me like somehow more presses means absolutely more cases per hour.
Yeah, my understanding was more than a little off. Still, the more profitable orders would probably go ahead of the Pyra at FormAction, if they ever got done. We already know the other company has delivered for the quantities ED will be ordering, I think. Not sure how many pieces he has ordered from them in the past. Still probably a smallish order/run.
Thanks for asking. Helped with my understanding of how it works. Now I really want those molds moved. Since the plastic won't be there until Friday, who knows what year those 500 clear cases will be finished. At least the lack of color and extras should make it a little easier and quicker to get them done.
Despite all the things holding up case production, at least it isn't so far away ED can't take a trip to check things out, and the molds can/will be moved.
What would clear plastic and fiberglass cases look like? Might be interesting. Oh, and maybe the new company could try out a glow in the dark mix to see how it turns out (and a set could go to our most vocal prototype orderer...that is the main reason I mentioned it). I still need to see pics of results to pick what color I want, if there is a choice other than clear and whatever the first run is. If they are structurally sound and fit properly I might accept a left over from a test run (still looking at those other colors FormAction did). Might be better if it is beat up and extra ugly so I won't be scared to shove it in a pocket and take it with me everywhere.
I am also looking forward to whatever color ED likes or wants as The Master Pyra that stays in the dragon lair or his pocket.
Is there a realistic chance we are within 6 months of seeing units in the hands of customers?
