@EvilDragon : Concerning heat dissipation, would this idea from early 2016 help with future revisions of the Pyra case? I appreciate there is no way to change the molds now but I do think it would help both with modularity & cooling. Seem to remember there was talk of a future case redesign that made Pyra a little slimmer, perhaps if this ever comes to pass the idea of a (possibly finned) metal backing plate attached to the cooling system would be worthy of consideration.

Can we use that noise to map the surroundings ? Even blind people will find useful this device !!

@EvilDragon is there still any possibility of people wanting a 2GB unit getting theirs early, since the 2GB boards are already produced? Or is that no longer a thing?

I'm not sure if I really need 4GB, I only wanted it for modded Minecraft.

Well, he still needs to fix the whirring/screaming noise on the mainboards, and by the time that's fixed the 4GB problem might have been solved (it ought to be solved already according to simulations), so it seems unlikely at the moment that getting 4GB working will be the blocker for the whole project any more.

Good point! Also, I feel kinda bad for bugging ED like that. I need to be more patient.

As I understand (I haven't played in years), Minecraft is a memory hog.

It is, a little. It's not too bad if you only play vanilla, but too many mods and the memory requirements will balloon.

@Silent-Hunter Not sure why you'd want a 2 GB board then. I'd hang on for the 4 GB if possible. Simulations show it should be fixed, so all that should be left is producing a new board and testing it.

Because he, like most people, don't actually *need* 4GB (Minecraft will fit in under 2GB, you just can't have anything else and probably want some swap just to be safe) and it was suggested some time ago that 2GB orders might go out sooner. Turns out the case was still being an issue (as it was with the Pandora, is it a curse?) so there was time to fix the 4GB issue while working on that so there's question as to whether the 2GB with the old boards will still go out at all or not.

He doesn't need to fix the screaming noise. As soon as he sends the Pyras out to the mass, the screaming will stop...

I didn't really want to touch the issue with the caps. After thinking about it a bit this is what I have to offer:

Suffering and war and death happen, and are indirectly a power of everyday life (maybe your food, or clothes, or transportation, or, as discussed here, electronics, plus countless other things). This particular issue is not one I have concerned myself with, and even then I wouldn't try to push my feelings on others. I am with @WizardStan and others on letting ED stick with what he feels is right.

Based on what @hns said, I would like to see if his experiments can solve the problem with ceramic caps, which I prefer for one of the reasons he mentioned. If that works out it may not be an issue.

To further support the team, I say stick with the screaming caps. Maybe they will give us a bit of the feel of using a system with a CRT! Retro gaming and all that. If nothing else it might irritate others, which makes me smile, and it could provide an opportunity to educate those that identify the source of the buzz and speak up about the Pyra and the questionable source of some materials used in electronics.

I probably won't mind if we get the current capacitors and their song. If it bugs me I will get used to it (seal off my ear canals with earbuds). I would say don't delay production over this, but it really isn't my place to say that. If the decision is to try to source conflict free tantalum caps, I am fine waiting. If we get the "evil" ones I won't hold it against ED and hns, but if they are opposed to using them I say one of the other options is a better choice.

When you said that I thought it might be related to queening. Maybe so, but not in the way I usually encounter that term.;)

    Re: Tantalum caps.

Attempting to source materials from conflict-free sources is not possible. The concept is incoherent and based on fallacy.

The idea is that by purchasing from regions where warlords use taxation or direct control over the resources to fund aggression and oppression can be avoided by not purchasing from 'conflicted' regions. The truth is that you can't purchase products anywhere without paying taxes to warlords and oppressive states. (Iceland and Switzerland aren't really source options.)

I'm all in favor of reducing the amount of resources going to such people, but this 'Conflict Free' idea makes no sense if you understand the nature of taxation and the State.

I know that most of you believe that Democracy means "we are the government" and "our leaders are not warlords".. I used to believe that too, ok, so save it please.

[EDIT] Need to add that deciding whether to buy from whomever controls the tantalum or not, is to make a moral decision about which side of the conflict you support. Maybe buying from whatever gang controls the tantalum will help them win and end the conflict? Maybe the conflict exists because the locals are resisting the efforts of $Megacorp to take-over that resource? By choosing to buy, or not to buy for political reasons means taking a side in a conflict. Are you prepared to justify that?

His avatar is also pretty nose-ey. This cannot be a coincidence. I think you are on to something here.

Since everything is so close to completion now, perhaps someone could take a nice photo of the blue pyra, fully assembled, and replace the rendering on the homepage? A rendered picture signals: "little progress has been made towards final product". The blue case looked really pretty.
