Release Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Yep, cheating is bad, it kills the game. But, if you already completed it a few times, there is nothing wrong ;)

The file is named wolfconfig.cfg and is located in an hidden folder: appdata/rtcw/home/.wolf/main

The variable is not created, you have to add a new line.

For example, one could argue that the binary data invites and enables you to display the illegal images, which is not "easily" possible otherwise (since it's probably packed data).
Your stated rationale is ridiculous. It's like saying internet invites you to watch porn or something, just because you can find ads about it online.

If the game is not available in Germany anyway in that form, how do you get the data with the Gamma crosses while being in Germany? It does not make any sense.

Regardless of the legality of this, this is a damn stupid law, especially in the case of this case that does not glorify nazis in any way. Censorship is for the weak who don't find any better way to deal with a sensitive topic. We see recently in the UK what they want to do with internet censorship and it's not pretty.

In this game, you are killing Nazis so its a antinazi game..
I would the censorship understand if you play a nazi but you have to shoot nazis in this game which is a good thing..
There arent any swasiskas "Hackenkreuze" in the German Version
And they changed the Story, so theyre arent any Nazis but a "Wolfsekte"
I dont know the englisch word for "Sekte"..

Enyway: even the German Players dit know, that they shoot nazis in this game..

I can see the Demo being a problem, but why would there be a problem with just the data-less version?

Your analogy is just as ridculous and wrong. The binary data is directly linked to the problematic content, aka the only use of the binary data is accessing the content. Providing and advertising the binaries implicitly advertises the game and its problematic content (since what else could you be doing with the binaries). 90% of the internet might be porn, but you won't see ads for it on every page and there are ton of other uses.

I am not saying I agree with this train of thought or the law in general (it's pretty stupid), but picky people could argue like this and as long as it's not a clear matter I would rather be safe than sorry.

The binary version is probably fine, but Germany's laws are really fucking touchy when it comes to stuff like this -.-

We are talking about the internet here, the game is available in any form in multiple places (legally, too, since this law only applies to data hosted in Germany).

Besides, this is not the place to discuss said law (unless you are actually an expert, which I guess most people are not, so just give it some time...)

I can see the Demo being a problem, but why would there be a problem with just the data-less version?
This has been asked multiple times already, please read the thread :)

The data-less binary is not linked to the said content. What you do with the binary is up to you just like it is up to you to point your browser to a nazi site if you really want to. I don't see where my analogy is wrong, honestly.

And I dont understand the "rather safe than sorry" principle here. What is the worst thing that can happen ? WIll they take down the servers with a SWAT team ? Let's be serious 2 seconds. And it's not like there was no warning in the said packages in the repo.

Hum, I don't want to add more confusion, but what I will do with this also:  preview5.png

The data are free, so my initial intension was to create a big PND with the Data inside, but now, I have a big doubt! So please advise (the PND is not 100% ready anyway, default controls are not fited for the Pandora at all, and I still have some bugs with the Videos that are not Fullscreen) . This game has lots of visual artefact on Default driver on Gigahertz I'm afraid, barely playable I would say (I just tried briefly, on "High detail", so maybe it's better with lower details).

I DID read the thread thoroughly and all I see is concern over nothing.

As I see it the binary is also linked to a German version of the data which was approved by your government.. Without the data it's just a binary blob which doesn't form anything.

I understood we are waiting for ED decision, as he is hosting the repo.

I believe the concern does not extend to pandoria ? SInce it's not hosted in Germany ?

Actually neither version is approved by the German government.

However only the original (non German-cut) version violates StGB §86 (punishable by three years in prison or a money fine) - this is probably not applicable to the binary-only version, since it does not contain any of the visual content.

The less severe law (JuSchG §15 and §18 - punishable by one year in prison or a fine) forbids advertisement and distribution of either version to minors in Germany (English or German version, with or without nazi symbols, simply because of the violence) - This might not apply to the pure binary blobs, but I am not sure (and neither are other people I talked to), which I guess is a general problem of laws originally written for physical goods.

Also, yes, I believe this only applies to ED's server, since it is hosted in Germany, the pandoria server should be fine.

Thanks to those who provided their file listings. It appears that the Mac version I have is missing quite a few files. I may take a look at the PS2 disc and see if the files can be ripped from there. I doubt it. So now, I guess I will install steam on one of my Windows VMs and buy the game. I may kick in the extra few bucks for the Wolfpack and get the other games. At the rate he's going, Spear of Destiny and the others will be up soon. :) I'm not a lawyer (and don't care to act like one) but for me, once I've paid for a game, I would like to be able to use it on any platform I own for a nominal cost (i.e. the cost of the media and a reasonable handling cost). I don't buy a lot of new games, but it seems like I pay for the old ones over and over... I humbly suggest that the mods split this thread. One for RTCW support and discussion and one for the German legal discussion.

@lingenfr: May be the files you are missing are the updates? I bundled no data files inside, so you have to update your game to v1.41. I'm quite sure the update for Mac  can be found somewhere.

So what about all the Doom engine Ports?... Doom II has a Wolfenstien level. Will those need to be pulled too?

As for the Violence Laws, A good majority of the games would have to be pulled according to you Foxblock.

First, I am relaxed. Second, I expect that most people who hit this thread want help installing, configuring or playing RTCW. As you can see, the legal wrangling continues...

I bought the Wolfpack on Steam and got it working.  I had a bit of pixelation during the intro, but don't see any during gameplay. Works really good. This will probably motivate me to get the hang of the controls. Thanks again PS.
