Preorders Have Started. (Previously named starts in two hours)

ninja'd. ED wanted the loyal folks to get a chance to preorder.

ED's not doing this to just make money, he's doing it to foster community and make money, which should hopefully "pay out" in the long run. at least, he will be able to sleep soundly at night :).

Also - there is an advantage if the first units out land in hands that know what they're getting themselves into (forum members). If you read the comments section of the articles that have come out so far, there are a lot of people who seem to take great pride in the fact that they, "don't get it."

My expectation is that they will get 'enough' orders to make this 1st batch work with mostly existing community members. The community helps get the lump through the snake on software ports. Then the 2nd batch hits with fancy video of everything that is then already ready already.

Isn't this pre-order only needed to start purchasing components for the BOM? Based on EDs tweet that he already has enough money to make a batch of 700 Pyra's that seems to be covered already. Granted I would love to see him sell thousands, but it is an expensive niche product. So having sold as many already without actively advertising the product is not bad at all.
I was worried he wouldn't be able to finance a first batch at all... I guess that is not a problem any more.

I'm still a little worried about the US 4G version.

Based on it's lack of quantity? I suspect there is an audience for it, but it will be difficult to get people to do it with the uncertainty around whether or not it will work for them on their carrier.

I'm in for a US 4G pre-pre-pre-order model (paid prototype) and am crossing my fingers in hope that I'll be able to convince AT&T to give me a SIM card for it's IMEI number (AT&T apparently links SIM cards directly to a single IMEI).

Same, personally I wonder if the EU 4G version will even have enough. I think he'll have to combine them and just make it one 3G version.

That is not an option - these are being advertised and sold as 4G. Please give up on your dreams of neutering the mobile wireless aspects of the device for 90% of users.

I plan on using it with t mobile even though my phone is with Verizon and I have a broken tablet with a working 4G only SIM that should work with the pyra.
T mobile actually has a great prepaid setup that will actually allow you to have 200mb a month free.

In the early hours of Sunday morning I used my pre-pre-order voucher and an extra 40 Euros to pre-order a 4Gb WiFi Pyra.

Should I have received another voucher against the final order? There was a post that suggested there was a problem with early orders, and vouchers weren't emailed.
Bit confused as to where I am now

I wouldn't worry too much. Cricket makes me give them the IMEI for the device I am signing up with, but I still swap my SIM to other devices just fine and never need to tell them.

I think if anything it is useful for brands of phone that have additional features or support that they provide. For instance, if they can tell you are using an iPhone, they give you the extra feature of forcing you to pay extra to use it as a WiFi hotspot.

I wonder if the "2 hours" anouncement is a wink at our long running "2 months" gag ...

Something's wrong with this forum. Making bad jokes I'm taken serious. :)

So the third 24 hours of pre-orders is now up.

It seems we got :

350 Pre-orders the first 24 hours (350)
79 Pre-orders in the second 24 hours. (429)
49 Pre-orders in the third 24 hours (478) (Some double up Pre-orders were removed though)
