Preorders Have Started. (Previously named starts in two hours)


To bad it would be way to expensive to put both mobile chips in so it can used everywhere. Or a dual sim option.
Just making the modem modular so it can be swapped when travelling would be nice.
But apparently it needs to be soldered on a large PCB for cooling :(

I don't understand why these companies don't just make international LTE modems...

It would make too much sense and would make people happy.

Not enough space on the die for all the protocols.

It would be damn complex and expensive and only useful for those few who travel a lot around the world.
Consumers wanted phones to be cheap, now that's what it has come to.
 
It's almost as stupid as having your own internet that's incompatible with the rest of the world for arbitrary reasons.
Well, we aren't called the Democratic People's Republic of Ko America for nothing, you know.

In hindsight, what would've been best is another daughter-board that could've been purchased separately with all the relevant mobile hardware on it. It still could be done, maybe in a revision of the mainboard in the future?

That probably won't happen: redesigning the mainboard is a huge task, a lot bigger than redesigning the SoC board and if Luke-Jr is right about the cooling by the soldered PCB, it's almost impossible.
But there's a glimpse of hope for you: Most SoC's nowadays have the modem built in, so if there's a new one sometime down the road, there's some probability for it to have whatever modem isn't the one that you may already have on your Pyra mainboard. But of course, nobody knows for sure.
 
Nah. It's not impossible by a long shot. It depends on the layout of the board (if the traces are all on one layer, are there any other traces in the way, etc.). I'll have to have a look at the trace layout. I've seen it before but I'll have to hunt it up again. Impedance matching might become a problem depending on the protocols used but I doubt it due to the frequencies involved. Heat can be wicked away by a flex cable attached to the ground plane and heatsink combo or via other means.

I'm just happy this is going way better than the Pandora did.
Ed has kept his word on informing us on all the stuff he's doing for the system

Like I said, he could do world wide 3g (one chip for all countries) but then EU would lose 4g. No good way to do it really.

Only if the antenna or whatever is exposed to the CPU board directly, I suspect.
Would be nice to know how things are connected... I sure hope the modem's UART is connected, since using its USB interface exclusively* could harm battery life.

* Still need USB for firmware updates, but UART is better for the basic idle modem control.
 
I thought the numbers next to the frequency numbers (2,5,etc.) were different protocol substandards to LTE.
In the simplest terms, a protocol is how the signal operates. How are the packets structured? Are there even packets? Is it a pure digital signal or is an ADC required? Is the signal encrypted? What type of encryption? All these questions and more involve protocol. The frequency bands (2, 5, etc.) correspond to the actual frequencies these devices operate on. (anywhere from 700MHz to about 2700MHz) It's more true in the US that frequency band mirrors protocol because companies lease bands from the FCC to operate in.
 
And you're all forgetting the fifth hand. The US mobile phone industry was 'first' and grew organically, in parallel, with multiple companies with competing standards. Europe was then able to say, "Fuck that's messed up!", and created a third set of standards that their quasi socialist governments were able to codify. For the US to switch to the same standards as the rest of the world would be insanely expensive. Those bands would have to be bought back, all devices replaced, other packet radio spectrums dissencumbered, etc. We'really not going to fix it.

Generation after generation, US operators have repeadedly ignored standardization efforts. That "it all grew organically" is bullshit. If they wanted to get onto a standard, they've had 3 chances to do so already. Lets see how 5G will play out, but I think already you can bet your arse it'll be the same incompatible bullshit again.

And I'm a little confusing of the curve - there are only 6 types in the shop and within the numbers report, but there are 5 curves?

Yes, this link (http://stalker.openpandora.org/preorder.json) shows the total number is 452;
This curve (http://i.rdw.se/preorders.svg) shows the same number, but with 9 types of devices: 4G Wireless, 2 GB editions, 4 GB editions, Standard 2 GB, Standard 4 GB, US 2 GB, US 4 GB, EU 2 GB, EU 4 GB.
It seems that 4G Wireless = sum(US 2 GB, US 4 GB, EU 2 GB, EU 4 GB),
and 4 GB editions = sum(Standard 4 GB, US 4 GB, EU 4 GB).

As of now, 4GB is the top 1.
 
Adding the prepreorders is basicly right, I guess. for instance: I have 2 prepreorders, but wasn't able to find time to complete the order. Will do so in the next days. (no hurry need for the prepreorders, since the place is secure :)...)
