Preorders Have Started. (Previously named starts in two hours)

I'd be willing to pay 10 or 20 euros more if it means I get one.
It wouldn't be 10 or 20 more. If he needs to pay the whole thing upfront he'd need about 40000 EUR, divided by the 100 people ordered, making 400 EUR each, or about 300 EUR extra we'd have to pay to get it fulfilled. Even if it's spread over all customers (which I don't think is fair and shouldn't be done) that'd still be 30 EUR assuming 1000 sales in this batch.
Fortunately it looks like he doesn't have to pay for everything up front, just has to sell them out in a year or however long, which given the current numbers (as low as they are) seems totally doable, assuming nothing catastrophic happens to review units.

How about giving the US 4G users the option to put the full cost of the device upfront instead of just a down payment? That's an extra 225 EUR per person right there if he needs the funds.

Not helping much since I guess the real problem are the final and not the initial costs.
If there's no indication, that 500 US 4G units are to be sold anytime soon, a few people sending in a few hundred bucks earlier won't make much of a difference in the end.

Yeah, but do you see a problem with selling 500 US units within a Year? Perhaps I'm also too optimistic.

I don't think that'll be a problem, unless there actually is a problem, like it turns out they won't actually work reasonably well on any network.

Yes, that would be bad. Probably a bit expensive for just GPS and sensors.

I was referring to the markup from a reseller.

ED can commit to buying 500+ EU and 500 US chips without paying for all of them up-front:

So it seems the first batch of Pyras can be a mix of EU and US in any ratio. And hopefully all 500 US units will eventually sell, to make the money back.
Well that's a huge load off my mind!

Did you go for the standard or 4G one?
I went for the highest standard one. I was going to do the 4G model but I wouldn't ever use it or sign up for a contract. Oh well. If I ever decide to use internet anywhere for it, I will just get one of the usbs that allow that with a monthly subscription, but I probably wouldn't.

Nice! 600 preorders, over 100 of them are US ones, not that it matters now with the frame contract.

I like that phrase too, frame contract. Something nice about how it sounds.

And the constant re-statement of this fear is likely negatively impacting the sales of the US 4G option. This is likely to be an ongoing theme until a US 4G Pyra can be tested on one or more US mobile phone networks.

I'm in line for a US 4G paid prototype. I'm the last in line (#8) for a paid prototype, though I'm not sure that is as lock-ordered as the pre-pre-orders. However, this also means that DragonBox has my money on account for the value of a Pyra prototype.

If a US 4G prototype can be sent to me, even if as a 'temporary' one that I would need to return AND a set of AT commands that would validate operation, I can put an AT&T SIM card into it, run the scripts and report back to @EvilDragon.

I do not have an account with T-mobile and they do not have much of a presence in my area - no stores or towers. So, I cannot check against that one without additional planning and logistics. Not impossible, but I might need to plan more for that. However, if it works on AT&T, then it SHOULD work on T-mobile.

At the end of my testing, I would then ship the test Pyra prototype back to EvilDragon and continue to wait for my prototype in turn.

Would that help?

I am not concerned about it not working. I figure if the company makes modules that only work in the US they would make them right. If not I suspect a lawsuit would follow (not that I know much about business law in Europe).

@Grench just wants to get his hands on a Pyra even sooner. :p

Yes, that would be bad. Probably a bit expensive for just GPS and sensors.

It's probably worth it, for the convenience of using it just once, with a prepaid SIM picked up while travelling somewhere.

3G would be good enough for my needs, but may as well future-proof the devices by supporting 4G - I expect to be still using it in many years, it won't be thrown away and replaced after a year like typical phones.

Woo, 600 total preorders get! That's a third of a way towards an 1800 target in 10 days!

Also, US sales have ticked over to 101 4GB 4G and 1 2G unit, making 102 4G US units.

Yeah, ED likes that contract that much, he framed it and calls it his Frame Contract now.
