Hi, like many others on this forum i have been deliberating whether to get the GP2X. I am 90% of the way to actually placing the order but i have some burning questions which (i hope) someone on here can answer.

1) I have heard some people have issues with the type and manufacturer of the rechargable batteries. I already have a Uniross charger and am looking to get these batteries http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9804788.htm

Anyone know if these are ok?

2) Is the sound loudish on these units? Louder than a ds lite (if anyone has got a DSlite to compare)

I know that there is issues with the USB cable but i have a sd card reader so its not an issue. The main reason i want one is due to emulation of older games/systems. I have the DS lite with supercard which is good but the emulation on that system is pants to be honest and being slower that the GP2X i very much doubt it would run MAME at all anyhow.

I want to shout from the rooftops 'the GP2X is bloody great!' and also justify to my girlfriend that its worth £150 :)

it is. your gf will love it. but your looking at about £210 with all the bits..

arrived today.. i have done nothing t work but play with it, my collegue and my boss are after one.

playing all the classics i did when i was a kid, divx works, mp3s work :> no probs for me.

Cool! Whats the most impressive thing about it would you say? What really strikes you?

I find NeoGeo games to be the most visually impressive. Show her Magic Drop 3 and prepare to never see your gp2x again, LoL!

Genesis and NES emulation are easier to set up, and the games would probably be more familiar to the average gamer. I've got friends who don't even know what a NeoGeo is.

DooM II runs really, really smooth and the sound is very good. It should get the attention of any FPS fan.

Heroes2x and SuperTux are a couple of good games to show off, too.

Other than that, there are a ton of fun homebrew games on the archive: http://archive.gp2x.de

drmd megadrive emulator. (can i donate without paypal?)

absolutely rocks. i got all the games i had when i was a kid, and its made my 45 min tube ride to and from work seem like 5 mins.

if u see a guy in a shirt and tie riding from east to west on the hammersmith and city line with sonic on the go, that will be me :>

need some headphones though.. buling buling isnt the most friendly noise to make for 45 mins!

also divx playback is great. remembers where you stopped the film last time. batts last plenty if u get decent rechargables. all your mates will buy one too, and boss.

all the games are free if you own the originals.

if thats not convinced you you dont deserve one!

Heheh thanks for the response. Looks like i'm getting one ordered tomorrow to play with over weekend. I'll make sure my gf doesnt see that magic drop thing. I lost my Ds lite that way when i showed her nintendogs...thats partly why i am getting the GP2X, something to mess about n while she's on the DS :)

I'm sure i wont see you playing it on the tube as i live in manchester :) Luckily i dont have a long journey to work but i do have a fairly boring job (tech support for O2) and we get quiet periods...ideal for sneakily watching a movie etc.

I'm hoping to get that genesis emulator too, i owned a SNES so never really played the classic genesis games like ECCO, Sonic, Altered Beast (sic) :)

I've heard of the Neo-Geo and even played metal slug which is nice. Theres loads of mame games i'd like to play aswell (not sure if you can save your state on these?).

I vaguely remember playing immortal on genesis (dunno why i'm calling the system by its american name..!). iirc it had some hilarious speech samples and and a level with lots of little spiders?....

Anyway i'm rambling now :) Seems i've got a call, better get back to work..........

To follow up, Play-Asia finally emailed me to say that they received my broken unit, two full weeks after I shipped it (USPS said it would take 3-4 days). And NOW they're going to start the testing part, which will take another two weeks. And again, they may end up shipping my old unit back to me (at my expense) based upon their testing (which would be fine if the problem magically goes away). Needless to say I'm incredibly annoyed.

I'm not going to say "don't buy from play-asia" because it seems that they do a great job when there are no problems. But it may be worth it to buy from company that has a more customer-friendly return/exchange policy in the event you happen to get a dog, like I did.

Well, yesterday was the big day - I finally received a functioning unit. And, clearly it's the coolest damn thing ever. My wife loves it! Why? Because I finally came to bed at a reasonable hour, instead of hanging out downstairs watching dvd's and playing on the computer. Of course, once in bed, I stayed up for another two hours, restarting Phantasy Star I, and watching the first 20 minutes of an old MST3K episode.

Again, this is not to say that Play-Asia is bad, because I believe their customer service was consistent and polite. The problem was all the artificial lag time they throw in when you return something. It took them 2 weeks to acknowledge receipt of my bad unit, then another two weeks to "test" it, when maybe one hour at most was really required. So in the end, it took about 6 weeks to get a functioning unit, and at the additional cost of $13 for my shipping.

Take that as you will.

Thanks!-mike

heheh. It is nice. I got mine today. I'm going to use mine to watch films in bed. A lot of films i like she hates so its an ideal compromise. Anyhow, when we watch a DVD she usally falls asleep half way though LOL

Time to download apocalypse now.

It's called canceling. You're wasting money and time...

Whatever, ignorance (of the many problems of Chinese vendors) is bliss I guess...

I am in the US - Oregon, and Play Asia was always fast and cheap. I got my GP2X in 10 days, and my TV out cable with new cap which I ordered last week, came in ~5

Now I know why its taking so long >.>,its the darn carrying case, for every item I order theres an estimated waiting period that gets added on:

Power Adaper: 1 day September 14,
TV out Cable:1 day September 15,
Wrist String:1 day September 16,
Carrying Case:2 to 4 weeks (I go with 4) October 8,
GP2X:1 to 5 Days (I go with 5) October 13,

then 48 hours from point A to point B...well guess ill wait, people pay attention to when you buy something XD

I was debating whether to go down the lik-sang/play asia route but 10 days is far too long. Ordered from uk and got it next day and havent stopped playing with it for 3 days....Must put GP2X down...must eat...must sleep....

Btw, that carry case is meant to be pants. A Quote from a blog review of it is as follows :

"The Worst Accessory Ever

I got the official GP2x carry case and it is pants. It really is the worst designed case I have seen for any device, and I have seen many many.

The GP2x fits in the wrong way round so you can’t actually use it in the case.
It has a pocket but its is just a loose net that seems to flap and so useless for anything you might want to carry with the device, like batteries or SD cards.
The strap connector for it is cheap die-cast that I would not trust to hold a few feathers, let alone the GP2X.
It is disproportionately large relative to the size of the thing its protecting.

This is the worst case ever made for anything. If you can imagine taking the spongy excrement of a moron and smearing the GP2X in that excrement you will not be into the land of metaphor, but reality. "

This is not my opinion as i have not had the pleasure of wanting to use it. Why would i? My GP2X carrying case is my hands.

I contacted play asia a few days ago telling them that waiting for a month for it to be shipped is kinda insane, I could of ordered somewhere else and get it here in less than a week, I got a reply from play-asia today saying that I dont have to wait a month its being shipped out today (probably a typo) anyhow I really got to thank Shikaku for his suggestion or else I would of been here like a sitting duck waiting for a month
