I'm 31 and have been making electronics devices since I was 7, so I don't think I am too shabby at my trade. I, like many others I am sure, was very disappointed/annoyed when first attempting a pc-to-GP2X connection via USB2, to find that I had to mess about with various USB tools etc etc ad infinitum. Yeah okay, I understand that this is a community project, but for goodness sake, a LOT of people just want to plug it in, load their games on, and get playing!

Yeah, USB didn't work for me either. The suggested crap drivers didn't fix the problem, and my firmware was lagging 2 versions behind the latest firmware release. The manual said I had to upload the firmware upgrade to the unit over the USB cable, and nowhere mentioned you could just put the files in the root of the SD card using a plain old SD card reader. My first assumption was: well, if they say it must be done via the device instead of using an SD card reader, they must have their reasons... Prolly won't work if I just slapped them onto the card using a card reader and I might brick my unit in the process... Anyway, with no way to upgrade my firmware, I finally decided to try putting the files on the card using my card reader, and guess what? It worked...

Now this may seem quite logical to everyone here reading this. It sure as hell seems logical to me now, as I got to know my device a little better since I bought it a couple of months ago. But when you don't know the machine, and the manual is full of warnings that you might brick your fresh purchase, you really don't wanna try stuff that's not in the official docs... It's confusing shit like that, that makes the gp2x something of an acquired taste instead of love at first sight.

That being said, I'm marrying mine in march, and you're all invited! ;)

If someone asks a dumb question, answer them and explain how they would have found out themselves. Then flame then to the ground when they come back with another stupid question without taking your advice.

Exactly; every newb is entitled to a couple of dumb questions before having to don the asbesthos trousers. We all asked stupid questions at one point or another during our lives, so be a little more forgiving towards others that just recently got here and haven't had the time to absorb the wealth of knowledge there is to know about the gp2x.

And when in doubt, just ignore it instead of flaming them. You're not helping anyone, you're not improving the situation (the next n00b will still ask his stupid questions without searching the forums first), and you'll only come off as a jerk and bring a negative reputation (my god, it's full of assholes!) to the boards.

And no, that reference wasn't nearly as obscure as I would've liked... ;)

Not really the place for this conversation, but what the hell :)
I've not played the TMNT games for a long while, watched most of the early cartoons though (TMHT, silly name change!)
New film in production at the moment, all xomputer animanted, might be something worth watching... Possibly. :)

I must say, without a lie, that I had that impression within my first *DAY* of membership here... people just cannot live and let live can they!!.

Pigheaded know-it-alls will lose in the long run, because to be honest with you, I'd rather struggle and do something un-aided, than converse with an arrogant fool, who is too up on his high horse, to help the likes of a "n00b".

I may be a n00b regarding this hardware, but I have a LIFE apart from this rather drab forum, and I have amassed countless knowledge that, if you were just to be civil to others INCLUDING myself, I am more than willing to impart!.

So you know a lot about GP2X?! big deal!. You cannot progress in life unless you combine your knowledge with humbleness, generosity, patience and MANNERS!!!.

Fortunately most people realise this and learn - unfortunately we will just have to suffer the arrogant ones, and try not to enter inside their flame-inducing inane loops of argument!

Have a great day, and don't let the know it alls in here put ANY of u off :D :D ya doing a grand job!

Linuxlover, do be patient. Like you, ive been here for many months and like to search the forums regularly rather than ask for help. This adds to my feeling of accomplishment when I find and solve the problem. I myself am a noob (less than 4 months) here and while the folks who have been here for a while may get annoyed at answering the same questions, ad infinitum. Ive tried to just help the new folks by instructing them how to search for what they are looking for. Perhaps this forum would be better served if tolerant folk with knowledge sheperded this newbie thread. I'm reticent to fault those whos answers to others have aided me so much in the past. <_<

But in retrospect.....CALM down you guys....by nature this is a nubi thread...duh!

The people complaining about the flamers are seriously more flaming than the so called flamers!

All Shikaku said was that you need a card reader. What's wrong in that? You do, and they are cheap. He even came back to point you in the direction of a cheap one.

Linuxlover, if you find these boards drab then go somewhere else. Simple.

These boards are full of helpful people, who, given a little bit of politeness and respect will go to exraordinary lengths to help people. Many of us aren't as blessed in our daily lives as Mr LinuxLover here, rather we spend our days hunched over our PC dreaming of a real life. But we do the best we can.

Now, I'm off to have sex!

Nobody had any problems with the content of his message; it was the tone that was insulting. If it bothers you so much having to answer the same stupid newbie questions over and over again, here's an idea: don't! Briliant in its simplicity. Saves you the bother of having to reply, saves us the bother of having to read your rude answers. It's a win for both sides.

Would it have killed him to reply "Use a card reader, it'll solve your problems" instead of "BUY A CARD READER"? Not really...

Would it have prevented this whole stupid offtopic discussion? You bet it would have!

It's not like there's thousands and thousands of gp2x related boards out there, so we might as well make the few we do have a bit more friendly towards new gp2x owners. How can the community grow when we constantly act like elitist bastards and scare away any and all potential new users we might get?

Besides, if you find linuxlover's posts offensive, don't read them. Simple.

Yeah, and we might have even more helpful people if we stopped scaring them off before they get the chance to learn something so they can start contributing themselves. No wonder you guys have to answer the same newb questions all over again: you don't allow for a new generation of newb-questions answerers to be born and replace you, so you'd have more time to concentrate on the more important stuff.

Now there's an idea. If we all had a little more of that, we wouldn't have no need for these ridiculous geek fights in the first place.

Loving it.... Living the Dream.

Still waiting for my TV-Out cable, does it work on all emu's or just certain ones?

From what I've been reading, it depends on the app if tv-out is available...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

no your right a few are, most emulators from what I can tell wich is good cause then you can whip yourself up a Controller for it and have an emu box if you dont happen to have an XBOX 1. (I got to get another one of those)

Seem like most things i have thrown at it seem to work which is great. Looks ugly with its double sizing though, v blocky. I read somewhere its possible to make the res better if someone codes this function in. I suppose this depends on 1) if anyone can be bothered to do it or 2) there are enough people with TV OUT to warrant the effort.

Best effect i can get is to put the TV in 4:3 mode and sit 10 feet away. I have it running through a HDTV which accepts both standards. Which is best PAl or NTSC or not much diff?

Movies are meant to look decent on it due to the native res, Havent tried this yet though, i only have a 1 gig card, chocker with roms at the mo.

Its still a nice feature though that has a lot of potential. Its a bit weird the cable trailing out the front on the GP2X unlike traditional controllers, add this to the fact that the S-video lead i got has very chunky cabling which almost pulls the 2X out yer hand.

I'll have to see if i can get some cheap and nasty thin cables instead :)

I just got my gp2x finaly after a long wait :D

very nice piece of hardware! great screen to B)

the DrMD is the fist emul i lauched and i't amsome!!!

Just wanted to join the party, I got my GP2x yesterday. My $3 SD card reader had not arrived yet, and it wouldn't mount over USB, so in the meantime I went to BB got a 'stand in' card reader for five times what I'd paid online.

I'm lovin' it! Thanks to all of you, I've been lurking here for months and finally pulled the trigger.

Yeah, I can't see how I can enjoy retro gaming without a gp2x by my side. ...let alone travel for more than a couple of hours without one. Even when something better comes along, the gp2x will still be my 8 and 16 bit portable emulator.

Sure I'd want mame to eventually be up to the latest version of compatible games but for many of the games it currently emulates, it just can't get more perfect.

Got mine a few weeks ago. It really is an amazing bit of kit. Was a bit miffed to learn about the new faster version just released but you can't have everything can you?

I'm gonna order my GP2x & BoB(not mine but meh) off GP2x.co.uk, how long should I expect to wait before I actually receive it? I hate waiting too long, makes me want things less :(

PS: does it? *tries out* " moron "

 it does!

Nah, it's just gp2x.co.uk selling gp2x's that are guaranteed to overclock to 275mhz for a higher price.

Really? I feel a bit better about that then :D
