I'm 31 and have been making electronics devices since I was 7, so I don't think I am too shabby at my trade. I, like many others I am sure, was very disappointed/annoyed when first attempting a pc-to-GP2X connection via USB2, to find that I had to mess about with various USB tools etc etc ad infinitum. Yeah okay, I understand that this is a community project, but for goodness sake, a LOT of people just want to plug it in, load their games on, and get playing!
Yeah, USB didn't work for me either. The suggested crap drivers didn't fix the problem, and my firmware was lagging 2 versions behind the latest firmware release. The manual said I had to upload the firmware upgrade to the unit over the USB cable, and nowhere mentioned you could just put the files in the root of the SD card using a plain old SD card reader. My first assumption was: well, if they say it must be done via the device instead of using an SD card reader, they must have their reasons... Prolly won't work if I just slapped them onto the card using a card reader and I might brick my unit in the process... Anyway, with no way to upgrade my firmware, I finally decided to try putting the files on the card using my card reader, and guess what? It worked...
Now this may seem quite logical to everyone here reading this. It sure as hell seems logical to me now, as I got to know my device a little better since I bought it a couple of months ago. But when you don't know the machine, and the manual is full of warnings that you might brick your fresh purchase, you really don't wanna try stuff that's not in the official docs... It's confusing shit like that, that makes the gp2x something of an acquired taste instead of love at first sight.
That being said, I'm marrying mine in march, and you're all invited!

If someone asks a dumb question, answer them and explain how they would have found out themselves. Then flame then to the ground when they come back with another stupid question without taking your advice.
Exactly; every newb is entitled to a couple of dumb questions before having to don the asbesthos trousers. We all asked stupid questions at one point or another during our lives, so be a little more forgiving towards others that just recently got here and haven't had the time to absorb the wealth of knowledge there is to know about the gp2x.
And when in doubt, just ignore it instead of flaming them. You're not helping anyone, you're not improving the situation (the next n00b will still ask his stupid questions without searching the forums first), and you'll only come off as a jerk and bring a negative reputation (my god, it's full of assholes!) to the boards.
And no, that reference wasn't nearly as obscure as I would've liked...
