How to calculate a price for the Pyra

This is a million, 10^6. The development costs should be around 10^5. I would call the upper limit a pretty conservative guess.

do an auction for the first working prototype? maybe you'll get a good chunk of change.

Seems likely. I didn't expect the prototypes for sale to sell out, and they went pretty quick. Maybe the price should have been a bit higher.

If they were much higher, I would not have been able to buy a spot in that line. I have been approached by a rather confused individual who wanted to buy my prototype - which he thought I already had - that he thought he should be able to buy for $1900. My attempts to explain to him that it did not exist for me to sell may or may not have sunk in. I told him that it was not for sale. He demanded that I put a price on it. Now, I can afford my toys, but I do still work for a living. I told him that I would sell him my place in line for $8000 USD of which we would give ED 25% to cover his inconvenience of updating the paperwork. He stopped asking me about it at that point.

Trust ED to select a price point that is fair. That means that the price will be what it needs to and should be - which does include him hopefully making a tidy profit from this risky enterprise of his.

It would be nice if we could donate enough money to make sure the Pyra gets made, regardless of the number of preorders. If I had that much money to give away I would, and then the preorder funds could go toward the CPU board upgrade or other cool projects. Alas, I am broke.

It would surprise me if ED will not be able to find 800 people to pre-order but if it is a problem it might be possible to ask some customers to buy more Pyra's. The additional one(s) could be optional to receive once production is done, or you will receive a refund once the Pyra has been sold to a new customer. It would basically be an interest free loan.
I wouldn't mind buying two then, I really want this project to succeed.

Yeah I think I would also do it.

Buying two would certainly be a stretch for me, but a lot of people would surely buy extra batteries, blank cases for side projects and so on, i would.
