First generation games for OpenPandora?

People have tried to get Dizzy Wizards running right on the Pandora too without success.

what?! <_< Dizzy Wizards is practically almost done, all that is needed is either fix or rewrite the mouse/touchscreen code. The main reason neither I or Torpor have finished it time, keep in mind we both are working on this on our free time. For the parts i worked on I even dropped my personal projects to work on it, which improved the state of the game considerably.

Your statment is very misleading and doesnt properly reflect what really has happened. There is no techincal reason Dizzy Wizards will not be playable and behave the same as the ios version. All that is needed is time and motivation.

Right so to edit down your comments there, you're basically saying 'It still isn't working right'.

Which is what I said.

That's been the situation for about a year since I released the source.

I'm putting in the effort with Wizzley and HTML5 because I believe it stands a far better chance of working on almost every device in that state than trying to do a C port/hack for the Pandora.

My point is your comment makes it sound like the most of game isnt running, besides one minor control problem it will run and be ready for release. When I got involved with the porting effect, yes it was in bad shape. Most of the edge replacment was there, but it needed work. I had no part in the fact that it took one 1 year to get where it is, i do think I did help get it to a much better state in a short amount of time. When i first started graphics were wrong, logic was missing, sound handling wasnt done. (No offense meant towards Torpor, i just think he didnt have time to work on it).

Yes i can see from your perspective if you port to HTML5, it may run on any platform that supports a brower that support HTML5, provided it can run it fast enough. From a comment earlier sounds like HTML5 was very slow on the pandora.

Really I have no issues with your assperations to port to HTML5, I dont think its the golden cow of code systems. I think its going to have its own problems as with any supporting any platform or OS. The biggest is going to be speed since your using interperted code, although it would help for the java engine to support arm in some fashion. It may work for some, but its not going to work for all solutions.

HTML5 runs fine on Android, so at least Chrome must support hardware and ARM opcodes.

*everyoene* Javascript isn't the shit it used to be.

We all hated that f'ing coffee cup icon back in the 90's and 00's.

Google have changed it all. It's super fast now, I have been AMAZED at how fast it is because I, like you, expected it to run like shit when trying to do 60fps with lots going on.

But Google are serious about this and their JIT compiler seems to be blisteringly fast.

and mostly for all pandora 2 should not be compatible backward with OP. [all this should be probably done, because ED have already investors and good funds to kick pandora 2 project..]
Please pardon me if I'm misunderstanding this, but I can only see this forcing people to have to reinvent the wheel and throw away previous work. This strikes me as a really bad idea.

Not only that, but it also ignores the whole point of the Pandora, which is that it's not locked and runs on an open operating system, Linux. The problems with porting any Linux software to the Pandora are all technical. There are no artificial blocks added to the process. To make the Pandora 2 not compatible with the first one, you would have to scrap the idea of using Linux altogether. Don't expect another sale from me if you close up the device. There are plenty of closed platforms available.

(...) you could say, "im not playing angry birds.. because i have Worms+ and Scorchered Earth.. and now.. get lost.."

... I don't like angry birds and I DO prefer to play Scorched Earth (and Worms)...

Is free software though?

Every new generation of consoles / handhelds is a reinventing the wheel when we look a games for these handhelds. No doubt about that. The basic reason for excitation for common joe is not to play in games that was played on other system year ago, but to see old app in new clothes.. otherwise , you could say, "im not playing angry birds.. because i have Worms+ and Scorchered Earth.. and now.. get lost.."
I'm really sorry, I just don't understand... My DS was backwards-compatible with my GBA software, my 3DS is backwards-compatible with my DS and DSiWare software, my Wii is backwards-compatible with my GameCube software, my Wii U will be backwards-compatible with my Wii software. (EDIT: And even talking about more general-purpose devices, each iPhone/iPod touch/iPad revision is still compatible with the previous software, too, if I'm not mistaken.)

So, again, I'm not seeing why the Pandora 2 should be made to be incompatible with the several years of work preceding it. Again, perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you're saying?

Adding backward compatibility to OP2 will really stop indie dev envolvement in OP 2. That's what i want to say. We're not talking about MATURE commercial market like PSP / NDS. We re takin about non-existant commercial market to make more commercially-aware..

In this way, indie dev will be having "white card" to push some fresh commercial titles and not afraid of marked "doomed with all gpl-ready-compiled-apps-and-games"

EDIT :)

Of course , You're the reason that indie dev are not welcome in OP. If you're stating that you want to play oldies than "old games in new clothes".

It seems that all of You dont enjoy "forget me not", and want to play pacman [on mame] more than "FMN", right?

Wasn't the coffee cup for Java, not Javascript? There's a big difference between the two (despite both being very slow at the start). Javascript needs to sort it's syntax if it really wants to embrace OOP IMO.

Surely making it incompatible would reduce the number of developers considering OP2? As I couldn't imagine half of them wanting to re-write things each iteration of the Pandora. Unless it was a simple re-compile.

EDIT..

Why? Since nobody bothers when switching GP32 to GP2X to WIZ to OP, and all systems was incompatible in each other. The reason to leave community isnt incompatible new hardware, but more real-life , family and kids.. [releated with the lack of free time.. just take a look what skeezix said recently between the words.. he is not a hungry lion anymore, because real-life suck him more recently.. ].. and oh, theres some feuds that drives to leave the community..

One ginge to rule them all and in the cpu bind them

I certainly hope you didn't get that from what I asked about backwards-compatibility, because frankly that would be so completely wrong that I don't know where to start. :p

When we got Forget-Me-Not, I actually went and sent a chunk of cash (rather more than one iOS sale - I didn't even know the price until afterwards, I just paid what felt right) to Nyarlu Labs for it, and when VVVVVV was released I bought the game. Same for when we got Lugaru (at full price, not the Humble Bundle one), before both of those, too. All to my taste, all got my money, all well worth it for me. :p

Ahh, ok - my apologies. I wasn't sure if it was separate from that, and thus directed at both quotes. ;)

That's all good, if you have some people porting and optimising the major libraries for the new hardware. I guess you'll generally find somebody interested in doing it though

Its nice how this thread evolves :)

There are some people in community that dont mind commercial games on OP

There are some people in community that dont mind commercial games on OP and supports indie dev actively.

There are some people that care about emulators more [and are inflicted in piracy act, a bit..] and dont really want to pay for any commercials in here.

Im curious how many in %% we have in each group..

Oh don't worry, I don't even know where to start with this... there is so much BS here...

@StreaK:

I see what you are trying to do with cleaning the market to allow for new devs to take it over. But WHY would you need to do that?

As I said before, make a good game and people will buy it. You don't even need to reinvent the wheel, go with a new mechanic (VVVVVV), a very polished and unique experience (Forget me not), phyiscs and bunny ninjas (Lugaru), whatever there are tons of examples (take the whole PC game market, which is even more competitive and then look at how big indies games are and how many people DO make a living off it).

The only thing you should not do is to try creating something already existing without improving on it (like say an Angry Birds clone, but with Penguins and Cows).

By wiping the existing library the only people you grant access to the market, which did not have it before are those who don't make good games, who would not stand a chance against existing software otherwise.

That idea seems so blatantly stupid to me, it wants to make me rip my face off...

The Apple AppStore exactly has this problem, there is a TON of stuff up there and most of it does not get bought. Some apps shine and make money and those are usually the ones that stand out for some reason or another.

Sure there are cases of "bad luck" where a really good app does not get the recognition it deserved, but you can try to work against that with some clever marketing (Bob's game got a thousand times more attention than it deserved judging of the quality of the demo).

Those cases of "bad luck" won't be that many with the Pandora and the relatively small market and close knitted community, too.

EDIT: Btw, you bring the GPH handheld incompatibility to the table, you know this was one major point of critique from the community about all GPH devices and still serves to split parts of the Caanoo and WIZ community, right? which is pretty stupid as both devices are nearly the same in hardware.

poll time.. nah..

dont count on me :p , hehe [it will be better for You, if some other person will start this kind of poll, ortherwise there will be flame war :) , again and again, hehehe ].

There are many bastards that say they're legit comercial buyers and most of them suck whole romsets everyday :)

Cool, me just not liking Angry Birds (and not seeing how it is in any way related to Scorch or Worms, other than ballistic flight?) is single handedly responsible for no Indie Devs in OP! I didn't know I was that important, yay! :)

BTW, I payed for FMN as it is a great game and also I play it exclusively on the Pandora.

I do feel sorry for you though Streak as it seems you can't enjoy any game which wasn't developed recently (like the aforementioned Scorch or Worms) out of fear of scaring away developers...

Heh, yeah that was quite some misunderstanding then. :)

No bad feelings though and sorry for all the ruckus.

They see me porting. They hatin.

No, really. Did you understand, what foxblock wanted to tell you? Aaaaall these "gpl-ready-compiled-apps-and-games" exist for PC, too. But nevertheless indie sells good. How do you explain THAT?
