First generation games for OpenPandora?

You couldn convince users to buy hardware without devers on board on your side..
There's the flaw in your argument. We have every open-source dev on our side. Everything that's ever been open-sourced* can end up on a Pandora, from the Linux kernel to Doom 3. And that has brought users. The prospect of a full Linux desktop with all the software that I use at home is certainly what brought me. Trying to restrict its use with deliberate backwards-incompatibility and a custom SDK cuts off decades of hard work from this machine. Just so we can convince new people to do it again in a different way for money? That idea makes so little sense that I can only hope skeezix is right.

*a little exaggerated, yes.

true , but i mean just:

You couldnt get mainstream users [average gamers joe's] to OP without more mainstream studios [or even indie studios with well known games]. Of course we have dev'rs / porter's but that attracts only more orthodox linux users [because of linux apps / games ports], and not really average joe's. Average Joe's spend more $$ for games than orthodox linuxers , thats a fact. Create Pimp my pandora competition , tell everyone thats pandora is trendy. Put some svarovski crap into pandora and You're ready to fight for average joe. And dont forget to shout "this year is a open pandora year, if you're not with us, you're loser.". No Average joe wants to be a looser.. :) Users will eventually come :) with big sack of money. :) and finally if "clean money" comes , everything will be easier to solve. New fast firmware = no problem. Faster memory = no problem..

apart of that

Theres no business without money. ED is heading in right direction, but this might turn into crap when investors will try to push own idea. ED will be forced to dance like investors say..

Haha, I just have to bite, can I see some source or proof for that "fact"?

Because as far as I can tell at least concerning indie games (and we are still talking indie games here, think about AAA titles on the Pandora and I call you delusional) it's exactly the opposite. My source would be the Humble Bundle sales which show the average money spent by a Linux being much higher than that of Windows or Mac users.

Just because windows'ers have any other games. Dead Space 14 + Half Life 10 + Rambo 18.. Linuxers have no choice , just only to buy humble bundles..

Theres no brainer there why windows'ers will not participate in "humble bundle". Because they dont need to. They're have own , and not forget much better mainsteam games [and the same like on other current gen consoles ]

And did you forget EVERY FUCKING GPL GAME you and your imaginary indie developers are afraid of?

We have plenty of free games, windows games running in wine, Indie games and some "big" Windows games ported to Linux later. -_-

Heard of Wine lately?

I expected You to said that. But to be honest it is only aproving what i said previously. We have here real hardcore linux entusiasts. Its highly uncommon to play new games [from this year] on wine, since no developer really supports it in "requirements". And if you buy [for 30$] a game "for windows" to play it on linux, you really need to be mad.. because theres no guaranted it will work on wine..

This in mind, you might find this article from Wolfire Games, "The state of Mac and Linux gaming", to be of interest.

If you're paying that much for a product, you tend to research it first, surely? Doubly-so if you're purchasing a game to play via a compatibility layer. I know that's been the case when I've done so (once, for the record - no prizes if anyone can guess what the ostensibly "for Microsoft Windows" game was).

EDIT: Whoops, managed to miss two entire words out of a sentence ("that" and "much"). That'll teach me to try to write something while I'm also clearing up my sewing gear!

I really like that attitide. Straight question. Simple enough.

What makes you think im afraid anything? I already said some nice crap about GPL. So what? it doesnt mean im afraid of something.

All of you get too easliy excited these days..

FYI, I don't like Linux, I use Windows for almost everything (including building for the Pandora), have not booted up my VBox in half a year... for what it's worth.

What you say about Wine is partially true, most new games don't run initially, but then do after a few months.

I won't even care to comment about what you say about the "better mainstream games", if you feel like Modern Warfare 4 is a better game than QUBE or Bastion, then so be it, but to me that's not what the Pandora is about and certainly not what got me interested in it in the first place (and what I feel seems to be the philosophy behind it).

It's true that a few more commercial developers would be nice to spice up the Pandora's market, but realize at what kind of developer we are aiming here and that the GPL is nothing that a serious (and good) developer fears, it's quite the opposite actually.

Every developer who is afraid that he does not "sell well" because of better free software out there has no right to exist, because he is already aware his work is clearly inferior, that's just Darwin's law.

Last line from me here, good night.

Ah, thanks, I really should frequent their blog more often, they publish interesting stuff.

Google have changed it all. It's super fast now, I have been AMAZED at how fast it is because I, like you, expected it to run like shit when trying to do 60fps with lots going on.

But Google are serious about this and their JIT compiler seems to be blisteringly fast.

It's not all Google, everyone has been doing JS JITs and all the major browsers have it now. The whole pissing match arguably did start with Chrome, of course.

Sadly, ARM performance with V8 (Chrome's JS engine) is still not 100% there. It made great strides over the past year - you can see this on ARM's blog, but even those changes are only in the latest software like Ice Cream Sandwich. Meanwhile Intel is taking every opportunity to capitalize on the lagging ARM performance in V8 to try to make it look like Atom has superior performance per clock than Cortex-A9. It disgusts me, and the entire internet is eating it up.

To everyone else: update your Pandora browser to the newest thing you can get running and compare JS performance. May want to try the latest Firefox, I hear the ARM support in their JS engine isn't bad.

See ya tomorrow. I will need to GTFO right now. [maybe in the meantime this topic will be closed because of my trolling, if not.. i'll return 2morrow for more TERROR.]

That was so funny it was worth reading three times! Let's just look at a few things you said earlier, with a little bolding to help out:

Adding backward compatibility to OP2 will really stop indie dev envolvement in OP 2. That's what i want to say. We're not talking about MATURE commercial market like PSP / NDS. We re takin about non-existant commercial market to make more commercially-aware..

In this way, indie dev will be having "white card" to push some fresh commercial titles and not afraid of marked "doomed with all gpl-ready-compiled-apps-and-games"
Another example PolloPollo, 6 licenses sold. Game isnt good, looks awfull, sounds crappy? Of course not.. maybe is too expensive? Of course not. For 3 euro i'll buy 2 bars of mars and pepsi can. Well after all maybe it isnt just worth buying? NOT. Its because gpl alternatives out there in instances like "PicoDrive". Just download picodrive , download columns rom, and you have fun with quasi-like pollopollo there. Dont like columns, maybe Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo then.. go mame go spf2t.zip and you're ready to go..
Thats why i stated previously , that one indie dev will never jump to level of quake 3 / doom 3, and it seems that doom 3 like game is really demanded more that anything else [because we have "anything else" already for OP in apps / games / emus derived from GPL sources]. And here is my small statement that actually gpl kills small indie devs..
well, without gpl'ed apps / games for Pandora, aurora rift will be surely more visible.
You're not afraid of open-source apps, you just think they're killing indies.

With that, I would like to request a thread lock, as it's obvious that no one is convincing anyone of anything.

Damn Tempel :) you called me via email to answer, when you post my quote.. :) and i was ready to go sleep. Damn You.

I said a stuff about indie dev fears [and how i see it..], im not indie dev, thats why i said im not in fear anything, because im not trying to release anything.

Now go to sleep :)

Yes! It is good that you reminded me! *goes off to by PolloPollo and AroraRift*

Staying out mostly but ..

Played Skyrim on Wine (I use Crossover actually, make my life easier, but same thing) last night.

Starcaft 2 the night before

Portal 2 before that, and of course team Fortress 2 and Half Life and so on.

Wine actually has pretty good hit ratio the last few years; a lot of AAA titles don't work, but surely a lot of them _do_, right off, or within a week or two of release.

I see your point, but you're really reaching ;)

jeff

You know, maybe Aurora Rift doesn't sell because it stinks? (no insult to the dev, I didnt' try it. It just looks .. not what I'm looking for.)

Again, stats out your ass -- a sampling of one does not a case make :)

I must assume StreaK is trolling his ass off, so lets just ignore it :)
