Release Diablo

kind of shows how much this release is needed...

To be fair, your initial post mentioned:

notaz said:
Warning - not yet fully playable (crashes when you leave town, press space or return key to close the (sometimes) invisible crash dialog).

[...]

Unfortunately it's unstable and crashes in some non-obvious way.

It sounded like your post was really gauging interest as to whether anyone would play a version which was further developed. It sounds like there are a few interested parties (and a few people dusting off their Diablo 1 CDs in anticipation), but realistically, the main goal for this project would really need to be your desire to achieve something cool, releases on Pandora just don't seem to get so much attention these days.

If playing your current version can be helpful for you (generating information about crashes?) I am happy to run around a bit and report back?

that's exactly how I got it, that's why I shown interest but haven't tested it yet. so, do you need some feedback?

Seriously, do you this kind of release, even unfinished, after the months of hard work needed, is best rewarded by just ... ignoring it?

Even if not finished, the best course of action is to what, put a "Like" on the Board (1 click) and that's it? Not even the 10 min to download, grab the CD and launch it. Do you think clicking Like is the ultimate reward for a Dev?

(Hint: it is not, Trying software, enjoying them, making comment is)

Just ordered the Diablo1 over Ebay again.

I realy searched my Cdrom and did not found it more.

That Game would be great for my Pandora TV Edition ;)

Btw:

Have you encrypted the PND in any Way?

I was not able to open it with the PNDtools to have a little view inside it ;)

When i rename some Windows Games to "diablo.exe" then is there a Cance to get little Things to work?

(just an Idea)

Very old Games like WingCommander3 can maybe work?

Waiting for the next Days for my new Diablo1 CDRom and when it arrive will i try to make a Video too ;)

Diablo1 on the Pandora over one PND is genious for me.

Better than Starcraft for me ;)

(because i dont realy like Strategy Games)

Thx for your Work and i hope you will not stop with that ;)

Trying to find my diablo 1 cd back xD

But if this is ever released in a fully playable state, it will definitly join the list of games i play every day on my pandy =D

Finally 5 days after release somebody actually started the thing (no other but the most active dev), kind of shows how much this release is needed...

And yeah I'll need to fix the crash recovery in the next release, if there is ever one.
:( Me sad... I would have loved to test it, but i neither have Diablo 1 nor have a functioning pandora.

But Notaz be very assured that all your efforts are highly appreciated by me at least.

That is all work for the pandora is... But its just me, not an important person :D

I would have liked to test it but :

- I don't like Diablo in the first place (especially the first one that I really hated, the second one I could play at least a little)

- I don't have Diablo either

But I do find the work you did on this awesome - I'm a big fan of what you did on Starcraft and it's great you can reapply what you learnt there for a new release.

I'm just hoping your motivation can be maintained until I get my Pandora back in 2 months!

Well I was expecting someone interested to prepare their setup (find the needed files) in anticipation of a fully working version potentially to be released and confirm that this flawed build at least starts for them. I guess I did a poor job conveying that.

And yes ptitSeb's feedback is enough for now.

I'm using xz compressed squashfs (just like for StarCraft) to save space taken up by wine. unsquashfs on Linux can decompress it fine.

When i rename some Windows Games to "diablo.exe" then is there a Cance to get little Things to work?
Nope, it's not an emulator, the .exe (and all needed dll files) are converted manually to different files, original .exe is not used after that.

(just an Idea)

That looks like a DOS game? Anyway I'd need to have at least some interest in the game myself, even while the tools have improved somewhat and Diablo needed a lot less effort to reach the state where it starts up, it's still a lot of work than needs some dedication to finish.

If I owned Diablo I would have been all over this.

Sorry If I wasn't clear, there's some misunderstandment. I'm glad someone develop, I'd like to show my gratitude and I feel bad because it do not show enough, the fact is that I leave home at 4.40am, I only get back at 6.15pm, then I need to take care of three children, then if I got some time left I'm trying to finish building my home. I don't watch TV anymore and I've not played any game since three weeks (beside your HL betatests). I'd gladely donate time to test release or help in any other way as it's the least we can all do toward you developpers. but I don't have time to play just for my pleasure unfortunately, and even if I did have time my backlog is full enough for at least a dozen years of gaming (without exagerations). If you need something ask it and I'll help as much a I can but if you don't need anything I'm afraid I won't be able to play with 49 out of 50 release and I don't really know how to show my gratitude except by posting some thanks here, if you got any other idea (donations?) I'd love to hear them.

br

edit: now that Notaz clarified his needs I'll install diablo asap.

ps thanks again...

Earlier I said I was pimped, because I am. I didnt had much time lately (no hacking either) but I took time to find my CD :) I'll have a setup ready for your next release.

ok, installed and running.
It looks great... but as expected not for long. that's the drawback of these static recompilation, it can look almost perfect while there's still a lot to fix.
here is a first dump I got while trying to open the "menu" in game:

Ok now i must admit that i'm feeling a little moron...i could not make it run on my CC Pandora.

I copied the files

Patch_rt.mpq

and

diabdat.mpq (tested this in lowercase and uppercase)

in /appdata/diablo folder

but nothing (Pandora feels running something in background..i think wineserver)

i also tried enabling a swapfile (of 256MB) but nothing

I don't know what to do...is it compatible with CC Pandora ?

dunno if it's related but on first start i had a popup winlib that stayed for pretty long before diablo launched...

Thanks everyone for testing.

I don't know what to do...is it compatible with CC Pandora ?
I haven't tested it on CC but I can't think of any reason for it to not start there.

Maybe you're on old firmware? /tmp/pndrun_diablo.out should have some hints.

Here is the pnd.out

to obtain a complete pnd.out file i have to open a terminal and kill the wine processes, otherwise pandora was running in background wineserver etc and the pnd.out file was not complete.

Forgot to add...i'm on latest firm 1.71
