Could anyone program a searchable wikipedia ebook on the gp2x? Last time I checked the whole wikipedia was around 800MBs which would turn a lot of people away from the idea. I do have an extra GB card laying around collecting dust though.

There is a Ipod version for Wikipedia that fuctions with search for the people who did not know. There is also a Tero version.

For the Ipod version, you first have to download a program called Encyclopodia. Next you just download whatever language of Wikipedia you like and you're good to go. This works well because you can aways have an updated copy of Wikipedia.

Wikipedia has it for download so it wouldn't be a trouble to host it.

Also if it isnt to much trouble I think it would be cool to have a random buttom when you're bored. I also named most of this infomation off the top of my head so the Ipod stuff might be wrong.

I searched the board and the wiki and couldn't find anything about this. Forgive me if someone has already done this.

I think somebody already had that idea but I have no idea where in the board that thread is. I think it would be really nice to have wikipedia on the go. There were some limitations to it thoug, that I cannot recall at the moment. Search could be possible with an on screen keyboard in console-style. I wonder if a random button wouldn't be too performance killing though because it would have to process a shitload of data and then select something randomly... that is an 800 mb database and I don't even want to know how many entries there are that would have to be randomized.

Well, I'd assume it is indexed, either alphabetically or by subject. So, randomize first picks a letter by random, then goes from there. Should not take long. :)

First someone needs to make a good PDF reader, then converting the Wiki to a pdf wouldn't be too much of a task.

It would be much, much easier and make a lot more sense just to have a good graphical webbrowser on the gp2x. A dillo port may be good for something like Wikipedia.

There is a Links browser for the Gp2x which can display graphics I believe. Furthermore can you download Wikipedia as HTML?

I personally dislike glinks, and even if you remove the images, a graphical browser would still be strongly desireable to get font rendering, layouts, css, page colors, proper lists/boxes/forms... the list is endless.

I thought Wikipedia was several gigabytes, not 800mb.

Allan.
I thought that too, but I think the dozens-of-gigabyte version include all the previous page versions, which basically means you have hundreds of copies of most articles with varying accuracy.

Righto, done and done. Did this completely by accident, as I am mad keen on reducing the weight of dictionaries I lug about to help me study Japanese. No luck on that front - yet.

Qtopia has zbedic. But it doesn't work. Erm, didn't. Does now. ;)
Go and get Qtopia. Then, you'll need to open up the image file that comes with Qtopia. You can learn how to do this by going to the GP2X wiki page here.

Then you have to edit the mime.types file, which can be found in the "etc" dir of the "myQT" dir you should have ended up with. Edit this and include this line -

application/bedic dic

to enable .dic files to show up. So far so good. Recram the image file. Now you need to go to sourceforge and download wikipedia. This will take a while...

Put it on your 2GB card (it won't fit on anything less) in the F:\Qtopia\Home\Documents dir.

This will also take a while...

Now bung it in your GP2X, switch it on and wait for 2 minutes until QTopia becomes workable. Then go to Documents. Find your wikipedia, click on it, and you should be given an option to make this viewable in the dictionary menu. Say OK, then go back to the applications menu, select Zbedic, and wait. Kablooie. Sooner or later you should have a fully searchable wikipedia in your sweaty palms.

Hope all the hard work was worth it. I am off to continue searching for Japanese input ideas. (Kanji Nirvana isn't the best...)

Finally, apologies for the complete lack of any coding nuances, or programmy jargonny goodness, but I am a tinkerer and I only discover things by accident. Not through any skill, ability or magic power. (Oh alright then, perhaps blind genius.)

I followed your guide Jackie B, but when clicking 'Add' when asked if I want to add the selected dictionary to zbedic, I'm getting an error. "Error: Integrity failure, the file won't be loaded at next startup."

I've tried with the wikipedia link you gave and the English dictionary from the same site.

Does anyone have any ideas, what might be wrong?

I also added the wikipedia dictionary to the dic section of the image file. Although I thought that that was a mistake, I never took it off in my final tinkerings... Try that and if that doesn't work I'm plum out of ideas.

Oh - you did uncompress the wikipedia file right? Know its a long shot and all, but it could be something that simple. I know it works on mine - was looking up all manner of nonsense not an hour ago...

I did try to uncompress the files with WinRAR, but that failed, so I thought it wasn't necessary. What did you use to uncompress the dz file? :)

Thank you so much! That did the trick. :)

As it seems, I have to add Wikipedia to Zbedic every time, do you know of any way to save it so I just have to fire the dictionary up without having to browse files? (You mentioned you'd added it to the img, did that help?)

Jackie B, what OS are you running? I've tried to "recram" in the past to add new stuff to qtopia and always get an error...

Using Windows XP and a shiny script from the Qtopia GP2Xwiki. I got an error too, but as I was smoking a fag at the time, I didn't worry about it, and everything turned out peachy.

@ Doofer, I just rechecked Zebdic and the three dictionaries I have in there showed up straight away.

I have also recently discovered the shiny rotation setting. Which shows me hidden dictionary menu items I didn't know were there... oops. So try doing that, and adding the dictionary/wikipedia again from that menu. You can find the rotation setting in the settings section. :D

Looks like I took the long way.
