Anybody considering picking up an Oculus Rift..?


For me the Future is Augmented Reality and semi transparent screens as these allow immediate interaction with real world when needed.
I have my doubts that this will work out. You won't be able to concentrate on both, the "best" thing that could happen is that you get irritated by movements in the real world.
It will work.

Take your Pandora and stretch your hand so your Pandora is as far away from your eye as you can hold it.

Result: Pandora's screen will cover only a little of your visible area.

Now play some game.

Are you irritated by the environment you don't focus?

At least I'm not.

Now imagine the screen is semi transparent.

As long as you still don't focus the environment I don't think it does disturb you a lot.

But you can switch focus immediately when needed (some random things happen).

This is not comparable as these are clearly seperated areas. Imagine playing a plattformer (on a device with a semi transparent screen) with things moving on different layers on the screen (like you have it in Rayman Legends). How should your brain know wether the leg/shoe/some other part from another passenger moving by belongs to the real world or to the game ?

Doesn't this video cater to my point of view ? Isn't the crux that by concentrating on a task your brain starts sorting out things it does not feel necessary for the task ? So in your case the game is counting how often the ball is passed while the monkey/a player leaving/change in background color represents the real world. I did notice the monkey and that one player left but I totally overlooked the color change in the background, btw.

Brain sorts out background and concentrates on what's on screen.

Imagine playing a plattformer (on a device with a semi transparent screen) with things moving on different layers on the screen (like you have it in Rayman Legends). How should your brain know wether the leg/shoe/some other part from another passenger moving by belongs to the real world or to the game ?
Because the brain is capable of that.

When brain does not expect the humans to be in th game then it will seperate it from game.

Also it's not only about that.

The leg/shoe of other passengers are in the background.

If you focus on the screen your eye can't have the background sharp as well.

So it's not even possible to be distracted by that.

Take some transparent foil and place it in front of your eye (about 20 cm I'd say).

Now focus on that and turn on the TV in about 2-3 meters distance.

Your eye can't focus both so there won't be any serious interference (At least for the eye screen. Don't know how distracting the small screen is if you focus distance).

And don't forget it's a game that will need all your attention and not a static picture that will allow easy habituation.
 
Except that eventually the technologies will merge.


First we will get vr visors not much bigger or heavier than a pair of sunglasses, with out facing cameras so we don't have to take the visor off... Naturally all AR apps will work in this 'simulated non-vr' mode.


Then we will eventually get contact lenses that will be ideal for both vr and ar.


AR only devices will become obsolete, or available only for the very poor.


Then we will get implants, along with total sensory immersion... With a manditory ai to govern our vr / ar / vanilla reality interactions... for safety reasons.
 
I'll wait for a neural interface directly in the spine.
 
It's fine if you don't "get" the Rift - in the same way some people don't "get" the Pandora. If it's not for you, don't worry about it.
Well, I will buy one and see if the final version will be better.

I see several nice uses for it.

I simply don't see the point why it's hyped that much.
Well I think the hype is a combination of a couple things. It being a unique tech project that actually used and needed kickstarter and due to the higher than average end unit price, it became the highest grossing kickstarter campain in the site's history. But the actual number of investors wasn't that mind boggling, it's just expensive compared to most projects that had a >$50 "baseline" pledge. It initially shared the same level of fame as the pandora with it's crowd sourced unique geek toy origin. (~6000ish units pledged/preordered)

The fact that it's easily double the best experience in a consumer device and at half the price retail than the next runner up that targeted the general consumer gaming market.

And when they got the legendary John Carmack's attention basically blew up the tech and geek world.

The tech it's self is cool, but the hardware it's self isn't too groundbreaking, it's just how it comes together and the pricepoint that is interesting. ($300 rule agian) The hype revolves around the non-tangeable aspects of the device is all. Being such a big supporter of the pandora I'm sure you understand how a good idea, even if not in mindblowing hardware can attract such a powerful following.

But this video proves that while you are gaming (=concentrating on the ball) your brain does filter out most of whats hapenning otherwise (= the real world). So how does the situation change with a semi transparent screen in comparison to a todays screen? You still will be focused on the game, while theoretically the world around you could go havoc.

You don't need a sharp image of something to get distracted. Whats essential is motion in our field of view: while you focus on your task the brain is still constantly scanning the "peripheral" imagery your eyes record for possible "occurences" (like possible threats > escape reflex).But that's not what I'm trying to get at:

With a semi transparent screen the gfx people will have a hard time designing the game as they clearly need to seperate the graphical content of the game from the real world. Best examples are icons > try to view icons with different backgrounds and see how on some backgrounds the icons partially start to "merge" with the background depending on which color the icon and the background have in a particular spot. While this usually can be avoided by either altering parts of the background or the icon, this is getting really hard in your vision as you can't change the color of the game nor the colorscheme of the particular part of the real world you currently are.

Going back to the video: its rather easy in that video to accomplish the task as everthing is distinguishable regarding the color, you have players with white shirts, black shirts and a red ball (and even the monkey costume isn't colored in the same black as some players have on their shirt). Try imagine a white ball and the second team wearing light grey t-shirts, and sometimes the background partially changes from grey to white.

Its hard for me to believe that your brain will always isolate the exact parts of the picture that are part of the game, especially if the game itself uses several layers on which movement can happen.

There is already a good example of screens that show two images, namely glossy laptop screens.  I find the reflections highly distracting, so I would never buy transparent AR glasses for gaming.

I would use them to display a text overlay (chat or forum surfing).

It might be better right in front of your eye.

That might be a good point.

Background color might really be an issue sometimes.

If there is a reason for havong a Occulus Rift, then the countless Hentai-possibilities. I'm sure, japanese Devs are already busy...
 
Porn of all sorts makes lots of money.  No reason to expect it won't be a major use for the Oculus Rift.
