Anybody considering picking up an Oculus Rift..?

I'm going to the Play Expo again this year (Oct 11), hopefully I'll have a go at one of the newer devkits

Affordable 2D 360 cameras are ready to roll - there's the Panocam (aka panoball) among others, but this new one is set to be even more reasonably priced and has some nifty options (check out the light bulb mounting!) -

Virtual tourism - even live - has a lot of potential, instead of surfing the web in the evening, you could find yourself hopping all over the globe to see what's happening, as if there. Transitions from one location to another could be coupled with a Star Trek transporter effect!

There are lots of 360 samples already, like -

I prefer the FOV of the camera used in the Japanese demo - full coverage except for the position of the camera itself, so the operator remains more or less unseen with it held in front at head height. The 360cam above gives 360x150 degrees, so it's blind spots are at the extreme top and bottom. I suppose you could wear it on your head....

Besides:

Oculus:

"We do not allow resale of our development kits for any reason as they are meant for developers and are not consumer products."
Sick. If that's really enforceable then you don't own the hardware you bought. I thought stuff like that only existed for software (i.e. DRM/Steam-like).

The guy behind an 80s computer room VR simulation, Memorift, mentioned previously here has now unveiled something many of us have anticipated, a VR arcade - behold 'Memorift Arcade':

Now all we need is for these things to be arranged as 'rooms' linked by virtual corridors, so we can assemble our dream VR homes!

Oculus are in the process of acquiring 'Carbon Design' -

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve agreed to acquire the Carbon Design team, one of the premier industrial design and product engineering teams in the country (...) The Carbon team brings their expertise around building great feeling, great looking consumer products like the Xbox 360 controller. We’ve been working with Carbon for nearly a year on multiple unannounced projects.
Sounds like they'll be doing the CV1 design - and more besides. Controllers must be high on the list of suspects.

Edit: NeoGaf thread on it features some interesting links and discussion vis-a-vis Oculus and their plans for VR control systems -

Okay, two things bother me:

1. "Multiple unannounced projects" - Can't they just focus on getting the Rift ready?

2. Oculus "acquired" another company after being "acquired" by Facebook - Do companies only exist to be acquired these days?

Presumably (& based on things said by various Oculus sources) many of those unannounced projects are motion-controllers of one sort or another (& dealing with ease of use when unseen), one of the things that will need to be addressed rather than having a plethora of incompatible 3rd party offerings from the get-go. A joypad with no motion sensors isn't going to cut it for long...

Interesting, but I certainly don't have the space for that in my house ;)

Looks like this Design Company knows what they are doing. I personaly like the XBox360 Controller, it's "my style" of Controller in contrary of the Playstation Controllers. This Carbon Team does not look "cheap" but with Facebook in the Back, I guess this doesn't really matter. :D I'm sure they will design something good for the final Occulus appearence.

I'd like to play Doom2 with this. ^^
Was it Doom or Quake Series where you actualy run over 70 km/h fast ingame?  :D If this is not a fat-burner then I don't know. ^^
