@tigerroast do you happen to know anyone that has been outside earth? :D

Why would I need to know someone like that? Matter of fact, even if I did, why would I just take their word for it? At least scientists have the evidence, models, physics, and research to back up why the earth is a spheroid a opposed to a donut, hoop, flat plane, UN symbol, what-have-you. A torus has no core. The earth has a core. End of.

Actually, I'm curious. Why do you think (or hope, if applicable) the earth is a torus and not a spheroid? Literally the only 2 kinds of people I've seen that make that claim are conspiracy nuts and spirit-science believers.

Don't start on this, man. Questioning the shape of the Earth is a very common "practice your debate technique" suggestion: 9 times in 10 the person doesn't actually believe the Earth isn't round, they're just trolling and will stick to their guns no matter what. And when you go into a debate against someone like that knowing that that's the case it can be beneficial for everyone, but when the only person who knows their trolling is the "flat-earther" it's just an exercise in futility and frustration: you'll never convince them because they're intentionally being obtuse for the purposes of debate.
The 10th time it's someone of fairly low intelligence who has actually been convinced by the first 9 that the Earth is not, in fact, a spheroid despite all the evidence, and there again you'll never convince them because they lack the basic cognitive ability to recognize the original evidence presented to them for the hoax that it was.

Hehe. i dont actually think the earth is a donut. the point was about questioning granted things. no conspiracy spirit nut here dont worry. but it is a nice subject to discuss on this very topic.

Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease. Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed—in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical—and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. For that reason, greater caution is called for when dealing with a stupid person than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.

perhaps another reading of proverbs 26:4 is, "don't answer a fool's argument, or you'll both think it merits a debate."
what are trolls then?

The worst is when a really stupid person believes they are incredibly clever.

That in itself isn't so bad.. you can just ignore them... but then you find out this idiot has somehow collected a whole bunch of followers..

And you're like. .. 'Whaaaaat!??!'

*facepalm* humanity.

@WizardStan Good looking out. Even if this was a false positive, I appreciate it. I've never really interacted with someone about the earth-that-could-be, at least not outside of real life, so I really don't know that rabbit hole very well.

@erico Ahh, okay. I really like that attitude, questioning things taken for granted. For the record, I wasn't calling you out of your name; I was just giving context on my perspective in case you were neither a conspiratard or spirit-scientist. Setting myself up to be pleasantly surprised, y'know?

I like to think it more as a reminder that a status-quo can be broken, and should be discussed.
Example: We know that there is no reunification theory that joins Quantum theory with Classical Newtonian physics, therefore, one of them is wrong, however, we still use them.
Making the earth stand still and the sun and planets move around it works if you use cardiods.... and it is as valid as making the sun stand still and let the planets move around it, even though you KNOW the sun is not standing still and is NOT moving in a straight line either...
So, lets say there are 16 scientific reports claiming smoking is not harmful. And the 17th report actually says it IS harmful. Well... you know that 17th report's staff are idiots that messed up somewhere to reach the wrong conclusion...
what if the 18th also reports it as being bad? Well... people start thinking, Tobacco companies start lobbying... everything is at a turmoil... the status quo has been broken.
Same stuff about science. We have never been more than a few kilometers down into the earth... so we know a sonar boundary, thus we know about inner and outer mantle... volcanoes, and that is it. Now it seems, we DO have waters under the earth!

@Uncle Jack: Have done that too, also with sneakers... the soles were so badly damaged (uneven while walking) I could throw them away.... the sneakers were new too :(
I actually stepped on molten rock, like you do step on a gas pedal... It moves like a molasses pudding...
(I was the eldest cousin... so hey... had to show off)

to be a bit more precise/correct, quantum mechanics "devolves" into newtonian physics (Ehrenfest theorem). classical mechanics is great for certain regimes of motion (low speed, low energy, big-ish objects), quantum mechanics works for very small objects. it's general relativity (specifically gravity) and quantum mechanics that don't play well together... (even special relativity, without gravity, works great with quantum mechanics and predicted the positron.)

As tragic and horrific as this version of reality often seems... It is also the funniest place I have ever existed.

Relative to my other realities... This place is the most fabulous fertiliser!
