I Just Got My Gp2x!!!

I just got it! (The GP2X Value Pack)

Hey, I'm new here (this is my very first post) and I'm very impressed with my GP2X thus far. I've read on these boards a lot to prepare myself so I don't brick it and such and so far so good ;) I also bought a power adapter and a 4Gb SD card (which unfortunately can't be read by any of my card readers).

The unit looks great, much better than on a picture on the internet. I didn't have to apply any protective sheet and only had to take 1 off. The joystick isn't that bad, but maybe I'll try a mod of my own if I see it necessary down the road. With a pair of batteries in it it also feels great in my hands. A minor gripe is that I still haven't manged to get the USB cable to work (edit: USB cable works - just had to set my GP2X to USB mode), but I wasn't planning on using it much anyway. Got a card reader!

It has the 3.0.0 Firmware and the boot time is a bit long, but I was prepared for that and I think I'll be able to live with it. The GUI is nice, but after I went and got a 2GB replacement SD card I put Gmenux on it and I really like it. Especially how you can add links to new games and such. As well as adjusting the overclock on each games/app. My unit seems to top out at 257mhz. I was hoping for a bit more but I think I'll be ok with it.

If I want to use another skin, do I have to make sure it is made for 3.0.0 or will older ones work as well?

One of the movies I tested had sync problems with the sound but maybe it can be improved if I get a faster SD card. The SD card that I still haven't been able to use has 17 write/21 read speed and if I just can find a card reader that will read it... If I find a card reader that is compatible with the SDHC standard will it also be able to read 4 GB SD cards? (TwinMOS Secure Digital 4096MB, 150X, Ultra-X)

Can the shoulder buttons which skips to next movie be disabled? I used mplayer. I miss a "lock" feature that my mp3 player has. A workaround is to put each movie file in its own folder as the player don't skip outside a folder, just files in the same folder

+ good value for money
+ open source
+ supports a lot of emulators
+ good sound from the headphone jack
+ good video/image/picture screen
+ great potential
+ SD memory card support
+ nice community
+ ability to turn off display while listening to mp3's to save battery

- AC adapter port (when in use) gets in the way
- USB cable not working. Actually it DOES work! I just didn't know that I had to switch it to USB mode for the cable to work. I suspect this is why many other people report it as not working, they just don't know that you have to set it to USB mode
- long boot up sequence
- re-boots if you insert power adapter or disconnect it

I'm very happy with my new toy and think it's great value for the money. I'm looking forward to replaying all my favorite Amiga games as well as other homebrew games.

The only downside i really find with my new unit (not sure if it is every unit) Is that the buttons feel really loose and wiggly, I dunno, I'm weird, but that irks me a little...

Get the d-pad mod from Ed, it's so worth it!

This helps my wiggly buttons how exactly?

With a sexy d-pad mod I haven't even noticed those wiggly buttons.

Damn you and your clever words!

I just got my gp2x! At least it`s here, after 18 days of waiting, he-he it`s mine! Now it`s all mine! Oops, i mean, i like it :)

Well, actually, there is something that i like, and something i dont like. It looks very good and solid, screen is amazing, joystik could be better, but still not that bad, i have met D-Pads that was much worse. I dont have SD-card yet so there is only 30 megabytes NAND memory i can use. And i`ve already had to reformat it because handheld gave me "read error". :(

Tried Picodrive and Pocketsnes so far, and all i can say is WOW. Cant say anything more about it `cause just cant believe it. Both emulators run games very well and... very well eh?.. Damn, its just Fantastic!

And i was unable to run NES emulator, maybe because it needs an SD-cart, might find workaround in the future. Also it won`t play mp3-files properly, mmm.... most likely i`m doing something wrong. I`ve tried CraigAmp and Oldplay, but mp3s played very luggy and fizzy. In-built player doesn`t see NAND at all! I think, maybe its firmware 3.0.0 issue? Or maybe its because mp3 shouldnt be in NAND-memory?
I`ve got to find SD somewhere...

Oh, yeah, gp2x already drain two sets of batteries, that was fast. I didnt have enough time with it.

P.S. Sorry for a long post, full of grammatic mistakes probably :)

Gratz on getting yours m8 :) I also got mine today :D cant belive how good it is
I must say I love the screen and the machine is very light, but like a nub I got a SD HC 4gig card and it wont work :( so I have got another 4gig on its way to me :)
I have tested PicoDrive,PocketSnes,Mame & Lynx emus which run awesome but then my batts died  so im going to get a power supply ASAP.
Now when I go out for a smoke I can play Mario world at the same time

Bye for now :D

Found an SD-cart! Yo-ho-ho i`ve found how to play mp3`s properly, using gmu-0.5.0. And gpfce_v02 so cool nes emu! It ran games, that doesn`t work even on some PC-emuls, like Young Indiana Jones.
Other emulators just fantastic too!

I like this little console more and more. Only battery time is bad near 4-hours simply isnt enough, my charger always in socket.

I must thank the boards for all helping information. Without you, guys, i`m sure would be lost. Installing different software is not too hard and not very easy. Its so exiting, like you`re playing quest-game or something. Just what i wanted - console not for dummies. :)

hello! i got my GP2X yesterday and i was very excited about taking it on the train to work today.

the emulators are very impressive, especially picodrive and UAE4ALL. i had a (mega)blast playing Xenon 2 at lunch today :D i'm glad to see amiga emulation is so advanced already. sure, it's not quite full frame-rate w/ sound just yet but, on some games, it's pretty close! MAME is also fantastic, even if flying shark didn't make it onto the gameslist. i still have many emus to explore...

the cheapo 2GB sandisk SD cards i got from radioshack work just fine, as do the 2000mah batteries from there. there are no doubt better buys but these will do (and i didn't want to wait!) i had no problem streaming a TV rez DVD rip AVI at 1000kbps all smooth, and ROM load times seem fast enough. i get roughly 2 hrs out of the batteries and that seems fair enough, also.

i almost hate to mention how much the stick sucks. i just won't play anything with diagonals until i feel brave enough to mod it

anyway, i'm very glad i bought this. nice to see such a great community supporting it too!

hooray! GP2X came today and I genuinely can't belive how awesome pocketsnes is. Super Mario All Stars and Exhaust heat (the only two SNES games I own- I dont want to get any I dont) are pretty much perfect. I didn't think that Mode 7 was possible!

Battery life is rubbish though. Got about 2 minutes on the supplied batteries...

as for the stick, I dont mind it! I dont LIKE it, but its okay. I think thats mainly because of the cap from gp2x.de. They supplied the original with it, but I didnt like the look of it at all.

JUST got my GP2X!!! I was quite lucky though, the tracking service said that my package hadn't arrived, but as tough that I am however ran to the post office and ta-dah, there it was! It took 3-4 days from hong kong to norway. If I didn't get it today, I would have to wait over eastern, and get it 6 days later!
P.S I love it! :D

Yep, I would go nuts!
I got a bad overclockable unit, only up to 240MHz :(

Although my gp2x goes up to 300MHz on some software, you find that you pay the price big time in shorter battery life. I end up underclocking as much as possible.

I got my Gp2x 2 days ago and I like it very much, the video and music playback is a dream and the games run perfectly except for PocketSnes which runs the games too fast. But I'm having a blast at Zx Spectrum and Sega Mega Drive emulation.

One thing that bothers me is that Sonic 3 freezes often, and I have to load it again. And the machine won't boot in the 1st try it will freeze in the menu loading at the beginning I have to switch off and on again for it to load. And I press select when I'm listening to a song and I press select again and it reboots, is this normal?

It's been 20 day since I order my GP2x, Use customs why o why wont you give it me
