I got my gp2x yesterday and went and bought two two gigabyte cards as well. The sad thing is that I think my 3$ Led shoppe card reader is broken, after writing the first card full of goodness I tried starting to write to the other one. It however started telling me that its read-only! This happens with both cards now. After several hours of working with this I couldn't solve it, so I ordered an another one of the readers. Luckily before this happened I had time to transfer loads of megadrive games and pc-engine ones. (and atari st games, but I'd named tos wrong so it refuses to start)

It's about time I got myself a gp2x, I've been lurking here for ages, and I also had a gp32 for awhile, before I forgot it on a beach in france :(

That's an SD card problem, the tab might not work right.

I doubt it, since it affects both cards. Also when I remount it r/w (using linux here) it craps out a load of errors and goes back to write.

My GP2x arrived from Play-Asia this morning - having a frustrating time (but fun) time so far. Had to nick a SD card out of my camera. The 2MB card I bought with the GP2x (Kingmax) wont work in the console, my laptop or the camera! Have to get a card reader and try it in that before I send the card back to Hong Kong!

Off to have another game of Final Fight on Mame :D

Hey Toma69,

I live in the UK and have ordered mine from Play-Asia too. I am expecting it early next week. I was just wondering how yours was shipped and whether you got stung for Import tax?

I had to pay about £35 'handling charges' to the UPS man. Ordered the case, power adapter and SD card as well so probably worked out a similar price to GP2X.co.uk. You never know - you might get lucky and pay no duty at all!

Got the SD Card working so thats one worry taken care of :D

Hi all.

Ordered mine on Wednesday through gp2x.co.uk - got an email saying there is a 2-5 day delay in shipping the unit, which seems reasonable enough to me - I just hope it gets here before christmas!

Quick question though - has anybody had any success with the ScummVM emulator?

I got ScummVM working a few days ago and have been playing Day of the Tentacle ever since.

Fantastic emulator - works flawlessly!!

Forgive me as I am very new to the whole GP2X scene.

I have found the ScummVM program but where can I download the actual games from. Stuff like Monkey Island, Sam and Max etc.

Is there a step by step guide on how to get this particular emulator installed and running.

Thanks for any help.

Hello all,

We have a small set of things that we do not allow on GP32X! Keep away from these things or you may be warned, suspended from posting for a few days, or banned permanently!

- warez/rom links

Don't ask us for that.

Hey there Toma, Thanks for the reply!

I recieved mine yesterday, and was lucky enough to avoid duty, so I got a bargain there!

Seems like we're long lost twins, I ordered the same setup as you and I seem to be having problems with the Kingmax card too (the unit freezes as soon as I insert it). I'm still waiting for my Card reader and batteries from 7dayshop, so I'm having to drip-feed odds n ends onto the NAND memory at the moment, but I'm happily playing Super Mario World, so I can't complain too much.

Just looking forward to checking out the video playback and stuff when I can get the SD up and running.

I had to upgrade the drivers on my laptop for the built in card reader to stop the SD card from freezing the computer. Even when this was done I couldn't get windows to accept it so I put it into the GP2X, enabled the USB connection and typed 'format e:\' into a DOS prompt as a last resort. Took a little while to format (about 1/2 hour I think) but it works like a dream now.

ah, you were getting slightly different problems to me. I recieved my card reader yesterday (still no batteries tho.. damn!), tried formatting the card, and it still hangs my Gp2X, though I'll try to format the card through Dos at lunchtime today. failing that, it looks like I'll be spending more cash!

cheers mate.

Royal mail tried to deliver mine yesterday but nobody was in so went and picked it up from the sorting office this morning (with 2600mAh rechargables with me of course).

I'm very very impressed with it - gp2x.co.uk shipped it out with 2.1.0 firmware pre-loaded and a copy of the vektar demo on the NAND flash memory (needless to say, I'm now tempted to spend more money on the full version of vektar! it's awesome!).

Borrowed a colleagues SD card for a little bit of a play during the course of today so I could try out some of the other stuff on it - the Nebulus port is made me giddy as a young kid at christmas as soon as I saw that title splash screen, all of a sudden I was 8 years old again playing nebulus on my Atari ST :)

Played Duke3d (shareware version till I can get the data files from my full original copy), ghostbusters, and a few of the tetris & puyopop clones ... all ran totally flawlessly.

Duke3d was a little dark but that, i imagine, will be a simple case of changing the screen gamma in the config file.

I can't tell you how happy I am with this thing, and that's before I've even sunk my teeth in to the emulators (all my roms are at home, and I'm still waiting on my 2GB SD card from 7dayshop ... I might have to nick the 1GB from my camera and relegate it to being a paperweight while I'm waiting on the postman).

Whats the Joystick like ?? I hated the analogue thing on the PSP, is the GP2X one any better ??

What is the sound quality like for music with decent set of headphones. How does it compare to an Ipod.

Much, IMHO. I couldn't stand the PSP's one either (and its D-pad was even worse). The GP2X's isn't amazing, but I find it very usable. Since I modded the cap with an Xbox one, it's been great.

Haven't used an iPod, but it seems pretty good to me. About what I'd expect from a decent media player.

Joystick is adequate, no real quibbles from me about it right now though I do have the option of using the alternate one that was sent out by gp2x.co.uk if I suddenly decide I don't like what's on there right now.

Not tried it with headphones yet nor have I used it for playing mp3s in general, I've spent most of this evening playing nebulus to be honest :D

Yay! It's arrived and it's shiney and black. Preloaded with firmware 2.1.0 already! Nice touch!
Just looking back up a few posts, the sound quality is fine, much richer than my el-cheapo mp3 player which is now going to collect dust in a corner.
Golden moments are still happening. Ok so I'm a geek so getting stuff on to the sd card has been painless. But even so, craigamp and picodrive (sonic and eco tested so far) are working just dandy with 0% fiddle factor. Even my first test movie is playing flawlessly (encoded with avidemux in Debian Linux).
I can tell I'm going to have fun trying to write a boot script to take me straight in to craigamp with relevant clocking options loaded.
So far it's done fine with a couple of naff panasonic non-rechargeables. But don't worry, the 2700mAh rechargeables should be in the post to me already. Then I'll get down to some serious twiddling.
It's an odd beast. Has a slight geek factor with the Linux os and open source underlying it.
Now I'm off to Amazon to bag me a couple of 2gb sd cards (while Xmas shopping of course!). Actually 2x2gb cards might be overkill, I seem to be fitting quite an mp3 collection plus picodrive with 2 games, some photos and a test vid (The Microwave) on a 1gb card already!!! But I'm greedy and I have a mains adaptor and TV out cable with a video projector just sitting there doing nothing during lunchtimes at work... A full res movie sized to 2gb will look very very slick coming from this little box.
It's a nice box of tricks. Though I'd call it more of a media machine than a games machine.
Hmm scripted encodes of democracy downloaded files.... cool... I think this thing and a Linux desktop will get on fine together :p

Hi,

Had mine for a couple of days now and I'm loving it :)

Great service from gp2x.co.uk. A little longer to get to me than stated BUT I was sent emails and was updated through the whole process. At this time of year that's really all you can ask for (and they even sent me a Xmas card) :D

Had my first emulator (VICE - C64) running within 15 mins B)

Joystick is nowhere near as bad as some people are making out - I'm finding it very responsive overall. Bit tricky on the diagonals, but what handheld isn't?

Don't know what certain reviewers were expecting for the price, but I think the build quality is fine (except for the rubber I/O covers which are too flimsy).

Genesis emulation (Picodrive) is just ASTOUNDING - most games running perfectly whilst UNDERCLOCKING to 175mhz! Everything runs @ 200mhz.

Getting 4-5 hours out of my Vapextech 2500 rechargeables.

AC input is in the most awkward place they could have possibly put it, but with battery life so good I really don't think I'll be using the PSU for anything other than firmware upgrades.

Very happy, love my machine. Now I have to put it away until Xmas day  (it's a present from my wife)!

A little bit late here, I actually got mine about a week and a half ago. I purchased mine from http://www.gamersection.ca/ They shipped it out the next day and it was to my house in no time (I live in Michigan). It has the 2.0 firmware and I'm not too keen to risk bricking the system until more a more worthwhile firmware update comes out.

Using the ant benchmark that comes with the lcd/cpu tweak util I was able to test it successfully through 310 mhz before it locked up. Back in reality I can play quake 1 on it at 284mhz without lockups.

I purchased a 2gig Kingston SD card for use with it and although my computer will not recognize the GP2X over USB it works fine if I load it up using an SD card reader.

I haven't had any real issues with the GP2X at all so far and I am very happy with it. It was worth the 200 bucks just to have quake and sega games on the go.

I also really digg Milkytracker, I think this device has allot of potential for music making, somebody needs to start a community for people interested in music creation on the GP2X. Maybe a forum area for that would be in order?

I hope Game Park holdings makes another device in a year or two with a single/faster processor and an opengl compatible graphics chip in it. If they do I will be the first to sign up for it.

Just got my GP2X, or in sniffing distance of it.

Xmas pressie. Had a very brief dry run with a handful of emu's on a 4GB SD though and I'm in for a busy xmas.

Apologies to TelcoLou for the similar name but I've been "Telecoda" online for donkeys years.

I already built a dedicated MAME cabinet a few years back but never get a look in due to time and kids monopolizing it. Therefore I can now get some MAME action on my daily commute instead.

Been lurking in the forums during my investigation/purchasing stage and it seems like a pretty decent community here, dotted about with the standard nutters and heretics.

Looking forwards to getting to grips with a bit of GP2X coding too.

Old Skooler through and through here, grew up on Spectrums/C64(C128)/ST/Amiga etc. Was originally into the C64 demoscene waaaaayyy back. Done my share of assembler, c, etc.

So look out for a few starfields, greets type scrollers for starters.

Watch this space....

10 days to go and I feel as excited as my kids.

Finally i got my GP2X, cool... :)

but i hate the joystick, its REALY bad.
it have dead zones, in all corners i HATE it. have to find a mod.
it pretty much destroys every game where you have to run an jump on the same time like fx superTux and quake where you have to turn around and running on the same time. :(

Raise the stick a little by pulling it (it should come right off)... If you want a more permanent solution stick a tiny piece of paper in the hole of the stick cap.
