I Just Got My Gp2x!!!

Ok i got a gp2x f100 yesterday and i've to say that its one of the most terrible console i've ever had.
I really regret of having buying it. Maybe i will sell it instead of having it taking dust on my desk...

Why? first i did pay 40 euros of shipping + 53 euros of customs fees + 140 euros the gp2x (ok that's a personal experience...). At this price i expected much from this. but i'm totally disappointed...

if only i've read this before buying it : http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/Current_GP2X_Issues

My device has almost every problem listed there

what really pisses me off first is that the hardware is cheap and terrible (although the design is stylish imo)

-my screen has horizontal lines (not the damn diagonal lines that can be corrected with cpu lcd tweak) when i move the console a little (i read some people are having this problem too but still no solution).
-In my opinion the joystick sucks, and it's really a shame to have to put a piece of paper to make it work better.

I tried to open it but couldn't (seems like removing the 4 screws is not enough, i know i suck but there aren't any tutorials on how to open it)

moreover usb was not working with my windows xp comp at first. I had to use usbmon then it worked

The first impression was very bad...
I know that there are some users with the perfect gp2x, joystick mod, no dead pixels, no lines etc...
but there's too much randomness when you buy a gp2x...

For a gaming system having such problems is not normal in my point of view. You can't really enjoy it just when you have it for the first time (there are too many tweaks, problems, tips to be aware of...).

when you first have it:
how do you know that you need to use open2x to have faster boot. how do you know that some apps aren't compatible with FW1.4. how do you know you have to use selector with some apps. etc...

meaning that if you don't have time to search through the internet for hours you're screwed. (thanks god i've unlimited internet access too)

One of the advantages of the gp2x that maked me buy it : emulators
without emulators it's really not worth it...(I really like the neo geo emulator). But not ALL emulators work great...

Other good thing is the video playback without converting your videos (although i've lines when the video gets dark and that it crashes sometimes)

now when i think better why did i buy it? i already have a NDS,PSP,GBA,Wonderswan, pcengine etc...

mainly because people don't speak a lot about its problems (they focus more on what it can do etc..) and that i thought it was the system of my dream!! but i was wrong.

if you love to tweak your console , flash the firmwares and play with the hardware hacks this system is for you, but if you just want to play the emulators out of the box and think that they all work perfect, think carefully before buying it (its definately not for the end user).

otherwise without its hardware flaws this system is really good.

Er, did your PSP come with a tutorial on how to open it? And really all these problems are discussed to death on these boards.

Sorry you won't enjoy these emulators. You will miss out on the best portable mame and genesis emus there are. But am so confused as to why you bought this, and if you did read these boards, what you expected.

That amount of money to play games that can be obtained for free (but shouldn't be, of course...) is peanuts. Just the ability to have a thousand old arcade games in your pocket?

I am very happy with mine...

no because i don't need to open it :p

i've been playing around with some more emulators and now i'm beginning to actually enjoy it (thanks outcast, gngeo2x gpxengine)
although the stick still sucks (anyone can advice a mod?)
baby jo , barbarian ..that's really great to play these games again on a portable XD
i guess i've been shocked by all the hardware problems but seems like you can actually do something interesting with this portable ;)

I use Dave Cs cap, it does improve it a lot. But soon we'll be able to get a d pad on this thing I'm sure.

I've had a GP32 so I knew what I was getting. It isn't easy, and takes a bit of wrestling to get it to do what you want. But I think that's half the fun. I sometimes think I spend more time getting stuff to run, than I do actually playing the thing (not true-mame.... oh mame.....)

Am happy you are starting to see the benefits. Stick with it, it's a great machine!

Strictly from my own experiences with my GP2X so far, I would say that fans of "old school gaming" would probably get the most fun out of it.

I should not forget to mention that for people who want to develop their own games and actually want the public to enjoy playing them, the GP2X is probably the best choice for them, too. I don't think home brewing games for other commercial devices is an option... at least, not legally.

This is really awesome! I'm having a grand ol' time with my GP2X. I just found a site where I can get ROMS of my old Sega Genesis games, which I couldn't find before. Games like Road Rash and Toe Jam & Earl.

I forgot all about Toe Jam & Earl and how much fun I used to have playing it. It's great to play it once again.

Hi there! I just got my 2x, and I've starting playing around with it a bit. I decided to grab a 2x due to the serious emulator support, and the ability to develop for a gaming based handheld. The video support cinched it.

I'm a website programmer with some basic C/C++ and experience with linux bash scripting. I'm planning on brushing up on my rusty C skills by doing a couple simple ports for the 2x, if I get time between work, home, and my own web development. Here's my current most likely candidate:

You Only Live Once - kind of a beginner's roguelike I had alot of fun with. Already in SDL, and only has a few keys, so it should be a snap. I hope. I've never used SDL before, so we'll see.

So far, the only problems I've run into are the weak joystick (but it's good enough, at least until DaveC is back in business), and some pretty regular crashes. That may have been the regular alkaline batteries that came out of the box, though. Since then, it's been ok. And the stick seems to be loosening up a little bit, so that's good.

I received mine from GBAX yesterday and i'm very impressed apart from it's thirst for batteries and it's pre-scratched screen protector. These minor issues pale into insignificance when you start playing emulators on it. DrMDX (Awsome), GnuBoy (Amazing), MameGP2X (No Words left!). Could have bought a PSP for an extra 20 quid but what would be the fun in that. Very happy with my new toy indeed.

Hi, I recieved mine today from GBAX and it also thought for a while that the screen was scratched. It DOES have a plastic cover on though that dosn't have a visible pull-lip.

Take a good look.

Oh and the machine is awesome. Very pleased. Except with the 6inch or so tvout cable - that is beyond useless.

Yes, this is a common misconception, apparently. Make sure you've removed the thin plastic film from the protection screen.

so after waiting over a month for my GP2X i phoned the lovely people at www.gp2x.co.uk and found out that Royal Mail well and truely messed up, so they sent it to me and i got my GP2X yesterday and i REALLY LOVE IT!!!!!

yeah i understand that the joystick isn't that great but its not that much of a problem, it's smaller than i thought it would be. My workmates have enjoyed playing with it today (Duke 3D and Doom were played on it by them :D )

oh and already came with FW 1.4

Thanks, i was aware of the multiple screen protectors and i've peeled them all off. It just would have been nice to have been able to keep one on just to protect the plastic but it made the screen look badly scuffed so i removed it. Will replacement plastic screen covers be available ?

Cheers to the community,
I can't really wait till I get my GP2X in a couple of days. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get online on that day, cause I'll be going for a long weekend outside of town immediately after that, so I'll share my excitement about getting it, in advance.

Respect to all :)

I got my GP2X a month ago. It really is a great system, I am glad I didn't buy a PSP.

Only problem is, that the joystick cap breaks fast. When I buy vektar I will get a new one.

You broke your joystick cap?

Now that's some intense gaming! :)

Yeah... the little tab inside the cap that stops it from spinning around broke, losing some support. Then one day during a Supertux, Vektar (woot 250,000+ high score!), and MAME session, one side of the joystick cap's shaft broke in half, it is holding on using tape now.

I ordered a GP2X from play-asia the other day allong with a 2 GB SD card from newegg.com. I cant wait to get it. I was thinking of getting a GP32 instead but decided on newer version of the GamePark. This thing looks sweet!. I had a PSP and got rid of it. I cant wait to get my classic gaming on, on the go that is!

Now I have a few things that worry me. I am not that PC smart and I have Windows XP on my PC. I am just curious as to what problems I should be ready to deal with. Since the GP2X is linux based, what programs or what-not will I need to make this compatable with my PC. Should I be able to easilly install emus and roms right out of the box, or do I need to download and install some programs to get it working? I am worried that I am going to run into many problems, but I am patient with things like this and will do what it takes to get it working. Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you have a decent SD card reader/writer, as the one in the GP2X tends to not work or be very slow.

Otherwise, no, not to many other problems.
