"Interestingly, the Tungsten T5 PDA and Treo 650 smartphone from PalmOne, released in late 2004, use NAND flash to back up the contents of main memory during normal operations. PalmOne names this technique "non-volatile file system" (NVFS). It gives the illusion of a RAM storage pool that does not lose any of its data when power is removed. This PalmOne knowledge base article explains how this technique works on the Treo 650."

information from wikipedia...

Doesn't this mean that NAND Flash Memory in fact can be used as extra RAM??

/Shaddac

NVRAM can't be used as RAM, no. It has limited number of writes (to each cell, though the controller randomly distributes writes around to maximize lifespan), and is slower. Its not heavily used due to price.

On a Palm OS device, it is used as a flopyp disk essentially; they word it like that, since it lets you stick things into it so its not in "runtime RAM" -- so you always have your full RAM available for runtime (boiled down explanation). Historically, since PDAs only had RAM, both storage and runtime was in real RAM.. so older PDAs used up RAM for storage, and the new ones don't. GP32 never used RAM for storage, since it used SMC for it.

maaaan, that looks beautiful!!!!
best design!!

thats more like it - positive feedback!!

let's start a thread were it is a crime to moan.

I doubt it would stay moan free for long being around here!!!

yeah, i don't see why anyone's moaning! it looks great, is more powerful, and should be cheap!
plus there's xvid/divx playback of video files that have a res larger than 320x240, so there's no need to reencode!!

SO gonna get it!

DrMD should run like a dream on this machine, can't wait

dr md should be able to run with mega cd support too!!! 32x may be a step too far, what do you think reesy?

What I think is that you are NUTS! It is only around *250 MHZ!* Some GP32s do that NOW. That is not even fast enough for SNES let alone 32X etc.

And graphics chips? useless for emulation. They are good for frame buffers and for stretching (which we wont need) that is it!

Get real, it will just run some stuff we have now a little smoother and that is about it.

Well, theoretically... But I'm wondering, how... compulsory? pre-ordering actually is? I preorder, and it turns out, after it's launch, that it is infact utter crap... I'm stuck with an order... It seems good, though.

I'm wondering, do they base their MP3, OGG etc. play capability on GP32 homebrew, or does it actually support them trough bios/os?

If this ends up being cheaper than the GP32 then the price of the GP32 is going to drop quickly. My advise to Ebay sellers would be to sell now while you can still get a good price. Craig selling off his old stock was the warning sign.
Of course that's a tough one to call when we don't know how good this is going to be but newbies will want one of these instead of the now obsolete gp32 so it's worth keeping in mind.
Personally I'd rather not sell my gp but funds are severly lacking at present. I guess it depends on how long we have till this thing is launched.

Would this be able to have PDA functions? It would be great if they could add the back up battery or whatever is needed to have this function as it's something that quite a few people seem to have wanted from the gp32.

The design is pretty good but I'm not loving the colour. I know it's meant to match the gp32's colour scheme but the gold/beige is not a good look. The CG image of the black console is far nicer but maybe they don't want to step on Sony's toes to much and just want to come across as a quirky console?
Oh and they definately need to switch those buttons back to the proper places. The whole point of the upgrade is because we all want better SNES emulation (amongst others) and moving the buttons around although not the end of the world is going to be annoying.

I noticed the logo on the console has a red X. I wonder where they got that idea from. ;)

The button placement doesn't matter at all as you can configure the buttons however you want in most emulators anyway. If/when I get one of those though, I'm gonna switch the buttons around cuz that's just an eyesore.

Well the original GP came with a mp3 player built in to the firmware/bios, So it`s probably the same for this system.

Pre-ordered as soon as i saw it.

I don't see what all the moaning is about, the 2D Accelerator will take a HUGE load off the primary processor, Like Craig said, don't just judge by the clock speed.

Honestly can't wait for it, and who wants to emulate psx or n64, if i want to play those they're in a box close by (besides, there isn't enough buttons :p)
