It's software this time!

Should davesha skip the queue so he can work directly on the Pyra?

Ah, I may have mixed up the Pandora with my own attempts to get hardware video encoding working on an OMAP3 dev board, which never did succeed.

It's not actually my main field, so I'm not sure how comfortable I would be actually teaching it. But I'd happily work on a thread or set of Wiki articles or something about the low level Pyra software and hardware.
Fair enough and yeah a Wiki would be really useful!

I think it would be great if I let him SKIP the line - and finish his order right away (sending him packaging and the rest of the experience later on).
He already proved that he can help and I'm pretty sure it would bea good thing for all of us.

But I don't want to decide that myself. You supported the Pyra, you helped out and you're the ones still waiting for it! So here's a poll - please let me know if davesha should be allowed to skip the queue and become the first delivered preorder - or not.
I really don't get, why you feel obliged to ask us. Or even to explicitly inform us about you doing it.

ED's always been about transparency. He's showing respect to the community, especially when so many have invested money and faith in what he does.
openness. ED's usual transparency as to whats going on in the development of the PYRA
I get and like that.
My point was rather, this is a case of giving a much needed dev the means, not someone cutting in line. I found it rather amusing, that he makes it let him cutting in line, instead of just sending him a Pyra. :) <ADDENDUM> Payed devs are way more expensive than that. </ADDENDUM>

I think the one against it would be the poor sap relegated to the second batch :p

To be fair, that could be so many of us (to be the "first" of the second batch), myself included, as there have surely have been many, many cancellations and (re)orders (reshuffles) since many of us placed our first order. I've been quietly hoping that I've moved up the queue a little, although I'm not holding my breath.

Hopefully there won't be a significant delay between batches anyway... I imagine it will be a process of weeks to build, test and dispatch 500 Pyras in any case, won't it?

Hey. I've preordered not one but two Pyras. I'll gladly wait longer.
It's actually pretty funny to me that @daveshah is interested in the Pyra, I know of him from the open source FPGA scene, nextpnr specifically.
one for compiling code and one to play while waiting, good move! :)

huge thanks to @daveshah for liberating fpgas! <3
the mega65 uses an artix 7 too, verry nice.
would still love an fpga-cpu-board for pyra at some time...

Yeah, I can imagine that a lot of number changes have taken place. I had to cancel my order around Christmas, I certainly intend to reorder at since point now things have settled down a bit here, but I'll be all back of the queue

You, who voted for NO...

WHAT'S YOUR ORDER NUMBER ?! :-||
Well, daveshah said he might troll, so could be him... Send him to the back of the line...

Hi all :)

I obviously voted "YES", as every little bit of help is appreciated in order to get the Pyra out in the wild. So thank you @daveshah for your time and efforts ! :D

On a side note, @ptitSeb : where is this Unreal demo coming from ? Managed to get your hands on the Unreal source code ? Or is this some example of box86 magic ? ;)

Cheers, Magic Sam

I'd vote yes but I haven't pre-ordered a Pyra.

Glad to see capable people are volunteering to improve the software. Hoping to purchase a well functioning 4G Pyra when it goes retail for UMPC purposes.

I did end up getting a GPD MicroPC though. It's a good UMPC but I'd rather have built-in 4G and a more pocketable device. My main concern for the Pyra is the SW and performance for my uses. The performance of the MicroPC is way more than enough for me so I can take a hit but I'd still need to see videos/numbers of a "stable" Pyra running various things to compare.
