Analyzing 4GB RAM


As far as I know, carbon is frowned upon in modern RC quad-copters and cars because of shielding 2,4 GHz communication.
But maybe this material is not affecting this range because of another structure when mixed with plastic.
Then maybe they can make a mix that supports a fraction of the full 1.5 tons and still offer significantly improved protection from no carbon mix and less WiFi attenuation than a full carbon mix. It would be nice if this can be tested in the real world with the samples that are being provided. Another option might be to use full carbon for most of the body, but use regular plastic over the antenna section. As long as that is not in a corner, then it should not reduce the robustness of the case by much.

As this post is from Tuesday, and as somebody who hates wading through pages of cruft, could you please post updates in a fresh thread? I don't care if your titles are nonsense, it's easier to read updates.

what makes you think this? most racing mini quads i have seen lately are carbon fibre frames. they fly FPV as well so using 5G and 2.4. check out Flitetest videos

Yes, I'd like to know more about this as well. I have tried a google search but can only find RF absorbers meant to attenuate RF waves, but these are made from foam with specific attributes.

I don't think ED's referred to carbon fibre especially - IIRC he referred to it as a mix of plastic and carbon. Now, carbon fibre can be described in such a manner although it's rare to refer to the epoxy used as a plastic (although I think it applies - perhaps it's more common in German). I'm not convinced that what ED is referring to has such a tight density of carbon fibres as in typical carbon fibre applications though.
 
There is a difference between carbon fiber and simply carbon.

Carbon fiber refers specifically to where the carbon is in long chains that are woven into a mat. That mat is generally laid into a mold that is then injected with a binding agent - usually some form of plastic. Using a clear plastic binding agent results in the common carbon fiber cross-hatch appearance.

Simply adding some carbon (like graphite), usually long molecular carbon chains, to the plastic mix results in more or less randomly aligned carbon molecules suspended in the resulting plastic part. Essentially this reinforces the plastic. In colored plastic, this should be more or less invisible - though it might result in a darker color than otherwise planned.

Carbon in otherwise 'clear' plastic would probably result in a 'smoky' appearance, potentially with some swirls resulting from eddies during the injection.

Hmmm.

So maybe, as long as the carbon particles are not forming a conductive layer, like a cage or the carbon fibre, we should be on the safer side.

I thought he meant shorter stands of carbon fiber add and mixed into the plastic mix, like one would do with glitter. In my head this prevented cracks from being able to get larger and compromise the integrity of the case. If that is what Grench was talking about, cool, if not, he may be right, as I didn't really look into anything. Just loss of assumptions on my part, and you know what they say about assumptions.

I like the way all of that sounds. I guess using a "plain" red and the "too light" grey could give colors close to the more popular ones. Time for a new poll, I guess. ;)

Well, yes. Isolated carbon chains (probably a good few atoms wide but many, many long) wouldn't be able to form significant eddy currents by themselves, so you'd need a chain of carbon rods all touching.
