Having said that... the other viable option that comes to mind is to only have a "rescue system" on the eMMC and the real OS on the internal SD card, like in android/cyanogen dual-boot.
Pro: swappable OS + no wear of the eMCC, which can't be replaced
Con: eMMC is more reliable and probably faster for non-fat32 + SD card would be required.
 
Are people really worried about 10€-20€ more on a >=500€ device? IMO, just put the most cost-effective (64 GB it sounds like) on there. Happy to eat the price difference. It's not like SD cards are really much cheaper anyway.

Why is the minimum order quantity 1000? A quick Google finds me other eMMC manufacturers who do volume pricing at 25...

Someone mentioned Qubes OS, which got me wondering: can the PowerVR blobs be isolated to a VM, like they can on x86 Linux? Also, yet another reason for more eMMC space... VMs aren't always small.

on the main-board, It's a Combo uSD/SIM card socket.
Wait, does that mean if you're using a SIM, you won't be able to use a uSD card??
 
I'm fine with 8, 16, 32 (normally I'm kinda spartan installer: minimal debian install, fluxbox and things, so everything is working for me).But won't mind to pay a bit more for bigger storage, if that's the majority wish.

But (perhaps I missed these point): are the eMMC and the internal sd card usable together (I can't remember if it was one or the other or both together) and I'm even more intresed where we are at the RAm size at the moment
I intend to use the Pyra as desktop/Notebook replacement and would go for 4GB RAM and 8GB eMMC instead of 2GB RAM and 32GB eMMC.

That's 10-20€ more in production costs. Effect on retail price and BOM may be different.

No. The connectors are just provided by the same component.

Because ED (or the manufacturer) wants to have the parts in original packaging. Most obvious reason for that is MSL (moisture sensitivity level).

PS: I know that a lot of distributors reseal even single pieces of components, including a MSL color card, but with the amount of headaches we had with a certain part (I work in electronics), I do understand ED's point.
 
I guess stuff like psx and dreamcast games will take a lot of space up- thats what sd cards are for I guess.
 
All of you arguing that the default PyraOS will only take up a minimal amount of space, seem to be disregarding the fact that within our little niche alone, a significant portion don't operate 'by default'.

Allow us to do crazy things please... something insane might just turn out to be genius.

I guess nobody is stopping anybody to do something insane with the three card slots there the difference between a 16GB and 32GB internal memory is not going to make the difference. My guess is that the only true difference even for extreme power users will be prioritizing instead of just dumping everything on the internal space.
 
I was using an eeePc with Linux, 16GB drive was always fine provided that you use a SD card for mass media (documents, roms, videos, music, photos, etc...)
I miss them eeePc's I got one from 2008 but the screen is broken. Worked all the way up to 2015 with a light Linux distro. Fantastic series of computers.
 
You can do more insane things than your brain could ever think of with 1G.

And I was indicating that I don't agree with what you were pointing out. Whatever choise ED makes as to which size internal storage he would put in the pyra. He is in no way putting restrictions on the insanity of things you are allowed to do on the pyra. Therefor the plea "please allow us to do crazy things" seems a bit unwarranted.
 
From hearing the desires of people on the forums it seems very sensible to me to enquire as to whether people would be interested in a Premium Pyra with 4GB of Ram & 32GB emmC (if the base model was 2GB Ram & 16GB eMMC). My strong suspicion is that if the price difference was around €50 (based on approx €25 of additional manufacturing costs) then there would be plenty of takers.
4 GB RAM + 32 GB eMMC would be my preferred choice, that's a given.

It's not due to lack of options it's because we don't have solid data about the impact of using an SD card / USB Drive as an alternative to eMMC. i.e. running an OS & its associated applications.

From my limited experience there is an appreciable difference when using USB2.0 / Micro SD compared to eMMC for running applications, my guess is that it would be even more noticeable when running an alternative OS such as Android.

Looking at the costings 32GB as the default seems like a solid choice to me :

8GB : €3-€4
16GB : €6-€7
32GB : €10
64GB : €20

Just had a proper look at the Pyra specs and now realise that the blue full size USB port is not USB3.0 (unlike every other blue USB port I've seen) so using USB3.0 via an adapter as an eMMC alternative (as mentioned in my previous post in this thread) is not such a great idea after all.

How do you know this? I'm guessing that the profit margin (retail cost vs manufacturing cost) will be quite large for the initial batches as this will allow the significant development costs for Pyra to be covered relatively quickly. From a commercial viewpoint a better way to look at it would be to consider if the extra €3-4 spent by having 32GB in stead of 16GB will generate enough additional sales to make the additional expenditure worthwhile.

@EvilDragon : Do you have any thoughts about the feasibility / possibility of offering a Premium Pyra with 4GB Ram & 64GB eMMC? (if the base model was 2GB Ram & 32GB eMMC) from what I can see the additional costs to the BOM would be approx €25. I can see very good reasons both why this would be a good idea (additional sales / profits) or a bad idea (additional complexity). If you're unsure about the level of interest in this then an official Poll would hopefully clear things up a little as to what people would like to see and what they would be willing to pay.

The overhead would result in a price increase of much more than €25. The CPU pcb can hold more than 2 GB afaik (using higher density chips).

However, MOQ will require a large order of parts only used on the premium units, and it'll require a separate production batch to make the premium CPU board. It also requires separate inventory keeping. I doubt the premium would end up lower than €100 even if it's only €25 in parts.
 
Personally I'm fine with 2gb/32GB until a future upgrade...

but to be honest, I would have prefered 4gb ram.

Not for games, multitasking, or web browsing mind you...
(lag free image editing of massive files without having to worry about being circumspect with my layers)
