Xgp/xgp Mini News

"Judging a system before released. Ha ha ha! Sadness."

"Then we have the SDK. Making the XGPmini perfect for an audioplayer. Giving it the power to beat the iPod. "

all in the same post no doubt!

all this is speculation, the xgp mini might not even be any good! who knows that the xgp would might haev AWFUL sound (i.e really really quiet!)
Ipod beater? not even sony could beat the ipod! nobody wants a gaming device hardly anyone knows about.

The thing is, you gotta look like at the market, who the xgp mini is aiming at. If the xgp is aimed at kids in class, and there is no nicktoons game out or like mario or something cool, no kid in their right mind would get one!

If people want music, they want an ipod or a sony or something else.
If people want a media player, they get an ipod video. Thats how the market is!!!
You gotta be a super powerful company to make it successful. I cant wait til mcdonalds makes a handheld (i mean, a media player shaped like a big mac! with its unique round screen and special sauce smell...) hahah

It all depends one their target audience. If xgp is challenging the psp audience (which it is) then i feel it has no chance, because sony always wins because they have so much money to lose. for every 10 successes, sony makes it out that they will have 100 times more. And thats a fact.
I mean look at sega! they ruined sega and loved it. Microsoft is the next one sony are aiming at. if sony is not successful this time, what do you think will happen? would sony do a sega? NO WAY! Sony literally lead the industry. The damn thing made cds, and walkmans, and lead the industry with media technology (most of which is filmed today is on a sony camera).

The sony name will reign high until they go bust. And thats not happening any time soon.
Nintendo will put up a good fight, indeedy they will, but really this is the only thing left (the revolution and the ds) that nintendo has. One more huge drop in sales and nintendo are completely done for.

If nintendo cant keep up with the market, then neither will the xgp and it will all be another gizmondo.

Take a look in the argos catalogue for example. two, three page spreads of psp. ONE paeg for DS, and a little corner of a page (if that) when the gizmondo was there. (and it was only there coz of the gps it had)

do you really think the argos super store would heavily advertise "XGP!!" bigger than the nintendo ds, or revolution??? xgp aint gonna rock no boat in the market, it never will.

Thats my response to the xgp really. Sony is TOO big a company for it to challenge it. It takes companies like APPLE to take them on, and win that round with mp3's... but apple ibooks next to sony viao? sony wins in everything else.

For the xgp to challenge the sony market, it will be as stupid as sega really.

Nintendo are there because they are nintendo! they are awesome and thats that. If xgp was to challenge the ds, then thats more realistic, coz the ds is a different console.

But seriously, sit on a college bus, a guy whips out his psp and shows it round, then you get out ur xgp. People are going to say "what the hell is that??!?!" and then ask what you can do on it "play homebrew? my psp has megadrive on it!" xgp person would be like "um.. i have burnout!..oh wait.. no i dont.."

its failed from the begining, if apple made it, it would have a chance.
but no homebrew?? thats like looking at sony psps flaws and COPYING THEM DIRECTLY! kind of stupid.

who knows whats going to happen though? but sony aint going down for nothing u know.
and then you got nintendogs to deal with aswell.

Guys, its not a competition about whos the best.. i like the gp2x coz gph were nice enough to make such a device for us! u know, free games, full homebrew and all that. ITS UNIQUE! especially to have such awesome media playback.

"If the GameBoy Micro had a resolution of 1024*768, you would still be able to see the pixels" are you confused? ... it seems so. try this out then, get a monitor for a pc with has a maximum 800x600 display frequency and set ur game to 1024x768.. what will happen?? you couldnt see anything!!! do you see what we are getting at now?

everything will have to be scaled down on the xgp mini, and for any text reader, ebook, movie.. anyone watched a movie on an ipod video?? why do you think apple are re-designing the ipod video to have a bigger screen???!?!!

another example, whip out your xgp mini in class, show people the scaled down tiny ports of a gp32 game, or drmd on it... then place that next to a gameboy micro with sd supercard with homebrew and gba roms... whos going to want what then? ;)

GpDogg: That was a bloody long post. And probably full of crap, so I'm not going to bother reading it. Don't take it personally.

Well, I read the last couple of paragraphs, and one in the middle. The movie playback sucks. Well and truly. It's got the right hardware and everything, but GPH just haven't done it properly. As for the last bit, and the bit about PSP homebrew, nobody I know has a PSP with less than 2.5 f/w or plays homebrew. Well, maybe one guy I know does, because he boasts about being able to play homebrew just as much as I can, but doesn't. And nobody has a Gameboy Micro because they suck.

Id definatly sell my 2X to get one of those! I Like them both, at the end of the day a new machine comes on the scene and people will want it. Fact of life. I hope they do well with it TBH.

Hah! I bet no one takes you serious. :p

GpDogg: Most things you noted in your posts don't count for other places. Maybe at your town/city/country they rather go to the PSP instead of a XGPmini/GBM. But here, we all want the small stuff. Just like cell phones.

Also, Nintendo has always been number one in the console market, worldwide. ;)

i reckon it does count you see.

In japan, where the best electronic stuff is made, or korea in our case ;) they release a console to the market. The same japanese market etc has different games which most are not released in other places, yet, the console remains exactly the same.

Nintendo chose smaller and sleeker options, someone here said the micro sucks, so not everyone thinks smaller means better!

a small unit basically is nice, but as the point i was making that a small gp32 is just going to be crap imo.

Where i am, people hardly know what a gp2x is. people never even HEARD of a gp32. and there are FAR more places like this around the world. 6billion people againt the hundred thousand gp32s sold.. far less gp2x's have been sold.. and for gamepark to release a console to 6 billion people.. they have to be someone like apple or sony to get noticed, otherwise its going to go the same way as the gizmondo (but the gizmondo had alot more going for it).

Again, the gizmondo is decidedly different than a psp.. but who wants a slightly worse psp? for the same price?
That is my argument really.
Im happy with the gp2x as it is, once the flaws are ironed out its going to be my fave. i sit it next to my ds and my psp proudly then ;)
i have a 1.5 psp, and so do many of people here (because some imported a lot of them via craigx). There are plenty of places here which have a psp with 1.5, and some even run homebrew with gta on a newer version. I have seen this and am a bit gutted that i spent all that fuss on a 1.5!

Some things people are not looking at here is the future of the xgp, which is directly competing with the psp.
Now im not a psp fanboy at all, im just looking at this in general. I am happy with my psp, does what it says on the tin basically.
most people i do see with a psp are either in their late twenties, or are about 13 years old. PLUS i travel ALOT, and I do see people with a gameboy micro and a DS and a psp whilst travelling.

I have NEVER seen a gp2x. i have seen like ONE gp32, but it was being clutched by a 6 year old and it was all grimey (so i wasnt going to ask that person anything about it).

If i see a gp2x around, i will definately ask the owner about it. Coz i think its cool and surprising to see one which someone else has!!!
And i live just outside a rather large and popular city, i have seen MANY psps around.

NOW, take the xgp, and put it in this situation. Will it be sold on the high street? if so, will it out-sell the psp? thats a definite NO. NEVER. If sales are low, no developers will want to release good software on it.
The gp2x is held up by us lot who dev for it. if it was just around for its media playing thingies i would of never of gotten one. EMULATION all the way.

Has anyone here got a palm one pda? i do, a tungsten t5. it is absolutely USELESS. AWFUL! Movie playback is abysmal compared to the gp2x. The sound comes from the BACK from one speaker and its generally a un-user friendly device really.
Now, i dont use this for its media playback, it has the feature, but its crap.

The thing is though, its a pda, designed for writing, storing and gps etc.
Thats why its successful.

The xgp, all it has going for it is the media playback (smaller screen compared to the psp i might add) and its games. Of which i dont think are going to be a worthy challenge to the psps titles, or the sheer amount the psp will have avaliable.

The psp will ruin the xgp unless the xgp has a secret weapon or something. if its like sony on breaking homebrew, then its not going to go well at all. People dont want two psps.
And to think, you said that "we all want the small stuff"... now, i dont know where you live... but gameboy micro sales are very low. proving that this is not the case. mobile phones are all novelty. hense they are still called phones, not MULTIPLE MEDIA PLAYING VOICE SENDING DEVICES for example.
I mean, you wouldnt buy a phone JUSt for its camera right?

To also prove that people want smaller stuff is wrong, micro sales are down, hense there really aint a market for things to be smaller.

I hope i am making sense now, i wish i could get to the point without saying so much. am i the only one with this opinion??!

"GpDogg: Most things you noted in your posts don't count for other places. Maybe at your town/city/country they rather go to the PSP instead of a XGPmini/GBM. But here, we all want the small stuff. Just like cell phones"

im talking about products in general all over the world. not just one place. GOSH! I bet the girls in your area say "we like the smaller ones" as well. like HECK!! ;)

its not the size, its what you do with it. if you think a small gp32 is good, then more fool you, coz its not a gp32! its just a ruined one.

Metal geo, please can you name 5 things about the xgp and the mini why they would be succesful as you argue against me?

GpDogg, what are you doing? Firstly, why you are writing 100 lines and secondly why you are living a free line after each one!

Tell you what, I am going to get the mini version.........before they file bankruptcy. :p It will be freaking awesome, like the neo geo pocket, anybody know what I mean? Seriously though the designs for these two consoles are amazing.

And P.S. I believe the micro screen is smaller than the mini's.....

Any shoulder buttons on the mini one?

Nobody really puts there finger on a console in that way, so I guess it does have them.... ;)

Oh you guys convinced me, I am going to get one too now, right after the acquisition of my new Phantom console. -.-
I still think it's going to be completely useless, I really don't see any sympathic feature (superior to my gp2x, except for 3D but here its the same with the PSP, I already made the decision it's not necessary) or good price/performance...

I guess I support these handhelds this much because sadly, I am scared to get a GP2X. When I got my GP32, I had no doubts about its quality. Also, it was one of the NLU versions, meaning it was made in the GP32's early years. Yet, the GP2X has many problems that I am scared of getting. One example is the joystick. I know it is fixable, but I really don't want to spend an extra $10 to improve it. And if so, how exactly would GPH "fix" the joystick problem? Send distributers improved joysticks to sell?

The GP2x build quality is fine. The problem is in the stick and it was discussed in such depth so it's couldn't be more.

Look at the PSP from Sony - it's hardly ideal and has its own issues too (the blurring lcd, the crappy dpad like buttons, the hideous loading times, the swapping of firmwares).

Then DS also has some inperfections...

You see... there is no reason why XGP have to be so perfect. Assuming that the speculating about XGP using the VRender3D chipset from MagicEyes is true then some hopes about the XGP are completely unfounded.

When I was considering the GP2x and finally decided to buy one (I was one of the early adopters) I wasn't expecting inprecise stick, interlacing issues with lcd, bricking my units with failed upgrade of firmware, etc. You will never know how XGP is good (or bad) until you got one. I bet that after few days after the first XGPs will be shipped forums will be flooded with complains, curses and discussions about possible workarounds or mods.

There is far too much crap being spewed in this thread from all directions.

Sony Dpad is connected. Just because it's split on the surface dosent make it any less responsive than a regular nintendo Dpad unless you just have really tiny thumbs. The split is only to avoid being sured by Nintendo who has a patent on the original 4 directional pad.

The PSP is ideal only for official games unless you've hacked it to play emulators and such which even then sounds like a waste of 250 bucks when you can a GP32 or 2X for less. Buy it play your UMD games and rencode your DVDs on Memstick and be done with it like most everyone else that owns one and stop expecting it to be the next GP32, it's not. Period.

PSP screen blur is not as bad an issue as some people like to claim. atleast it's certainly not on mine and I'd assume if mine isnt bad then there have to be other people out there without complaints as well, especially when I only hear the complaint being made by people simply trying to bash the system to make something else seem like a better choice, I'm suprised you didnt just add the old dead pixel complaint to complete the hattrick.

The 2X has problems we know this, the only way to truly fix the Dpad is for GPH to stop making it with the one they're using and try a more accurate one. Those of use with the current stick are simply assed out unless someone can code a perfect sollution for the responsiveness issue and I think it might be too much of a hardware issue for that to heppen.

Video playback on the 2X is just fine, it's just very power intensive.

NES emmulation is only as weak as it is because the emmulator hasnt seen much work since it was first released, and for a firs release it was damn impressive. Maybe someone will eventually code a better one or prepaps the original dev will come back eventually to fix it, time will tell, but we've most certainly not seem the best the system is capable if in every way.

The XGPs "Mini" and "Maxi" are far from real, just because we're looking at pictures. Untill Gamepark can list some more definate info about these two devices and their functions/capabilities/any other relevent info, all this pointles bickering over them are useless.

All I know is Game Park has to CONVINCE you their device is worth your money, don't say you're going to buy it instantly because you still don't know if it's WORTH buying instantly. Wait for developer interest other wise you'll just be buying a future Zodiac look alike if it ends up not being supported.

And start being mroe clear about which of the 2 XGPs you're refering to in these threads, Half the time I'm not sure which one any of you are referring too.

i was quite descriptive i think, even though my english skill SUCK. Thanks for the good reply alpha 2, just what i MEANT to say ;)

Are there any specifications for the xgp mini like operating frequency, and what type of firmware it uses?

After seeing pics of the xgp maxi up close,I am totaly going to get this thing. It looks awesome

Its worth mentioning that even if this unit is commercial only, it will be hacked to play emu/apps on.

Psp is commercial only, but that didnt stop homebrew.

I'm going to get a gp2x to hold me off until the maxi and the mini xgp come out.

I can see it now...

PSP emulator released for XGP hahahahah

i hope that was a joke ;)
I can see it now... another bloody topic about the xgp haahahahaha.
I can see it now... PSP outsells the XGP 1,000,000 to about 2 i think
I can see it now... the actual name of the XGP will be XGP MAXI!! (?)
I can see it now... (insert possible XGP conquers portable gaming world comment here) :p

Btw, benny32, ur awesome! i think you should just get an xgp for free on release!

Ok, enough silliness from me, is it REALLY true that its going to ba called XGP MAXI??!?! or is that some kind of forum nerd naming it themselves to write in more topics to take over the gp2x side of things? :)

Nonsense.
Even if the unit gets hacked, it´s not sure if it gets much support from the homebrew community, seeing as most developers already picked up the gp2x. It´s very uncertain which developer would be willing to program for yet another handheld system.

The comparison to the PSP is ridiculous, since the PSP is much more popular. Plus, if you take into consideration how popular the PSP is, there´s quite few homebrew for it.

hacked? wth are you on, they are stateing that its "open sdk" since the first day.

Oh an most posts remind me very much on the posts when gp2x was announced "whoot,w hat a shitt, it will have nothing that the gp32 cant do, its just 33mhz more.

And you are complaining about its speed before the cpu and clock is even known? seriously, you guys are crazy.

Sorry to sound negative, but my point is: A new Handheld, the GP2X, has been introduced recently, the coders are working on GP2X applications and aren´t likely to pick up a new handheld when they don´t even use all the features of the GP2X yet (2nd CPU Core, Hardware accelteration).

I just don´t know where all the games and applications are supposed to come from. Commercial publishers? Don´t make me laugh. Homebrew coders? Busy with The GP2X and PSP.
Besides, this Handheld isn´t designed for Homebrew/Emus anyway. It has 3D accelteration, Widescreen and WiFi - features that are meant for commercial usage.
