Xgp/xgp Mini News

The small screen debate is really stupid. Your not going to need a perfect screen when you are traveling. People play games on their cell phone all the time. Also I have a GbA micro and it is more than adequate for gaming.
It's not so much the small screen as it is the small resolution.

I travel constantly and I can tell you that the gp2x with its low bat life, and very fragile build is not ideal for on the go gaming.
How do you know the build quality of either of these will be any better? Same goes for the battery life.

The XGP mini will be a leet gp32 with quality emulators.
How do you know it will? Also, the squished screen will surely ruin many games.

Also the dpad owns that craptastic stick on the gp2x.
How do you know the d-pad won't be squishy like on the PSP? I'd rather use the gp2x's joystick in that case.

The press release states that gp32 programs will be compatable with XGP mini.
That seems to be hotly debated at the moment. Like all these things you're convinced on, you'd better wait until everything's confirmed in English.

I know the resolution of the mini's isn't confirmed yet, but I've never seen a screen that small with 320x240 resolution.

And

Why

First post in this thread confirms that the XGP mini and XGP will have homebrew.

Put up or shut up about this.

I'm tired of uncomfirmed facts and lies.

Give me definitive proof EITHER XGP has homebrew support.

I REALLY hope so... The Mini looks too sexy... Weren't the XGPs made for commercial stuff [from reading various sites]?

The way I see it:

The larger of the two is poorer for emulation as previous posts have correctly pointed out, as games stretched to meet the screen resolution will look crappy. A wider screen is great for playing movies, but not games.

The smaller unit has PSP style direction keys (this is NOT a D-pad, Nintendo uses a proper D-pad, <_< as a D-pad is a solid pad where your finger rotates and activates the direction keys. Put your index finger over the GP2x keys and roll it, as you would for the mini XGP - your finger slips right - you spend time looking at the keys so you press the right one, right? - that is why PSP style direction keys are bad. :(

Stick to your GP2x! ;)

Bear in mind, as the saying goes, "better to be a master of one that a jack of all trades" - divide the community to 3 units and the community will be confused, angry, and the manufacturers will die as they will be "Jack of all trades, master of none". Specialise in the GP2x and grow it!

Yes they are playing but all these system runs at native resolutions. The mini is supposed to be GP32 compatible, right? Then to be so it's screen must be at 320x240. If this will not be case then welcome to rescaling. It will not ruin image quality totally but don't expect as good looking graphics like in the native running GBA micro.

(but wait - is the mini really compatible with GP32? - on other topic there is a clarification it isn't)

Fair enough but what you mean by "on the go gaming"? Do you play games when cycling, walking on streets or what? Sorry for sarcasm by any device might get damaged when you can not sit calmly.

If I am going to buy a portable, it has to be portable... otherwise I might as well play the games on my Xbox

The GP2x isn't a portable? Then PSP isn't either (as the DS and more)...

I see it like this, there will be few sales and thats it, because people that already have a ds or a psp and that dont know about things like Gp2X, Gp32, Giz and so on wont buy this because they will see it as a small piece of shit company without any reputation and shitty games, and the people that have a DS or a PSP and are interested in this will probably not have the money or not want to go out and blow $150 to $300 on a new handheld that will probably fail.

So I see this as something like the N-gage and it will fail miserably or just be just hanging in there, unless they spend millions getting they hype up though advertizing like what the consols do.

sonehow i knew this topic would start in a flame, i mean - an xgp topic in a gp2x one?? someone PLEASE move this! Its only causing unwanted gp2x vs xgp oddness...

The xgp.. for me, i really REALLY dont think its worth it, psp has already won in the catagory of pmps with media playability. And if xgp reckons the games are going to be better? man, i wouldnt challenge sony on this one.

XGP mini = gameboy micro? No i dont think so...

The gameboy micro is AWESOME! Believe me, i had one!! But seriously guys.. those of you which had a micro would know this - a gp32 on a micro?? SOUNDS awesome on paper.. but the gp32 did a WHOLE lot more that the micro does, so basically you can forget movie playback on that tiny screen aswell!

It all depends on the released model.
You guys (most of you anyway) moan about the gp2x's joystick and all that. The gp2x on paper sounded the best thing EVER, then you try the joystick and all of a sudden its like a crappy device!

Whos to say that the xgp etc has firmware problems and joystick crapness aswell? i love the gp32, but the joystick WAS pretty flimsy! Sit that next to a PSP, and the only difference you would get is (psp is better..).

I wouldnt speculate on rumours either! I remember people going ON and ON about wifi this, drm that on the gp2x.com site... GP TWO EGGS! Remember THAT???????
And all because somebody said the words DRM, or NAME CHANGE. Suddenly the gp2x is the crappest console, gph are liars and all that awfulness coming from 13 year olds.

I love the gp2x, its getting awesomer and awesomer by the week! GNUBOY ROCKS!!! and so does gngeo. If anything else is going to be this good on the gp2x in the future, and in such quality emus in such a short time... things ARE going to be awesome!

The thing is, the gp2x IS the successor to the gp32, why would anyone want a smaller gp32? Why dont you just go out and buy a gp32! THEY ARE AMAZING ALL BY THEMSELVES! This mini thing with its tiny screen... i mean, the gameboy micro - this works! Stick in a game, it loads in seconds and you whip it outta your pocket and play at work or in college without you looking liek a gaming geek!

Get out the mini xgp in college or work and play spectrum, people are STILL going to think you are a geek, but with a bit of style and... tunnel vision...

but anyway. The xgp, mini xgp and the gp2x are all seemingly different consoles.

The gameboy micro and the ds are completely different consoles!!! There is no comparision! The ds is awesome, the micro is a gameboy advance but sexier.
Just play phoenix wright and you will know what i mean ;)

all consoles have a different story to tell, it all depends on which one you enjoy the most.
For me im happy with my gp2x, reading in my gp2x forum!!! Im not happy when people come in here and post topics about a completely different console.
I mean, i dont think the mods would like it if i put down a topic "psp news" in the "talk about anything gp2x related" topic.

I mean, i put in a gngneo topic in here, and it got move straight away to help.

p.s im asking the mods to create a seperate XGP forum section, because the info in the gp2x/xgp is sparking up things and the vast amount of info from just one, would be a LOT to sift through, plus the fact that the consoles are entirely different from eachother. ;)

Well, all im saying is this now, im sure the xgp and mini etc will be cool. But not cool enough for me ;)
GP TWO EGGS is awesome, and i love it. Plays movies, music and drmd and gameboy and metal slug!
The thing is, everyone moans about THE CONSOLE... its not the CONSOLE you are playing! Its EMULATION of another console ;) HAW HAW HAW

You guys are just pissed because theres a new kid on the block stealing the gp2x glory.

The XGP series probably wont be released until this fall or late summer, so gp2x dev should stay consistent.

There is no denying the gp2x is flawed, and it is only a matter of time before a better homebrew console is released.

better homebrew?? thats sounds crazy! there wasnt a better one than the gp32 at the time, and now the gp2x is even better than that.
Besides, if you want the best GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! We want the gp2x, that is why we are here. whether its the best or not, i really couldnt care less. I enjoy it because i ENJOY IT! not because its the best!

I neither want to see xgp topic on a gp2x topic mainly because the consoles are vastly different, and both require seperate attention.
anyone else agree?

Wow can't you guys read, This is the GP2X/XGP forum.
People keep saying these threads shouldn't be allowed so maybe they should go to a GP2X only forum instead.
Why threads like this are so threatning to these people only they know ?

People that buy the XGP Min or reg are different from GP2x buyers.

Would a sony fanboy buy a Nintendo ds? I dont think so.

XGP series appeals more to the mainstream rather than hardcore.

If I had unlimited money I would get them all.

But I need maximum portability.

I bet more people would jump on the GP2x wagon if Gph released a second edition with improved bat life, better screen, uber stick .etc

The XGP (not mini) is confirmed to have lithium Ion batteries. That alone sounds wonderful.

The XGP mini will prob just have AA batteries or even AAA batteries. The mini will probably have the best bat life out of them all.

In the end, I see gp2x devalopment for a long time to come. GP32 still has dev projects lol.
Who's with me on shooting this guy?

The screen on the GP2X is brilliant hardware-wise, but just not handled well. One of the reasons people buy the GP2X is due to the fact you can use AA batteries which you can get pretty much anywhere, rather than some proprietary crap. Yes, the GP2X will have lots more development to come, but what's so funny about the GP32 still having projects? It's not a dead system.

You're spouting stuff that you can't prove. Give it up.

Ummm, I consider myself a big Nintendo fan and I own a PSP. I'm not a fanboy, but I've bought every iteration of Nintendo hardware released here save for the Virtual boy :/, and some things that would have been unattainable at the time of my youth like Game and Watch... Anyways, my GP2X will be here soon enough and I am still interested in these new models under the condition they support homebrew to the fullest extent. You generalize way too much.

Just because you bought nintendo items it nintendont make you any wiser than the next gamer ;)

Seriously now, XGP ON A DIFFERENT SECTION! like in the RUMOURS SECTION. This kind of topic is only speculation, amongst topics such as "new firmware??" its pretty irrelevant i think.
My post about gngneo was removed to the help section! XGP topics are like not even related to the gp2x now, fair enough, back when we used to talk about AA's being better and all that it was pretty fun.

Now though i think we are moving on and starting to get things out of the gp2x rather than just moan about xgp going to be better etc etc or that the gp2x should have lithuim ions etc etc.

i wish there was this button you could press and it would like quote everything why AA's are better etc etc.

gp2x is gp2x same as psp is psp!

Go on a xbox 360 forum and talk about the nintendo revolution for example! What do you think people would say? (good question i think)

I was referring to his comment on his "PSP owners would not own a DS" analogy, but in reverse order. I find that many people like both.

Yes we may be pissed that it is stealing the GP2X glory but for a good reason. It doesn't deserve to.

Most of us use the GP2X for pretty much homebrew and emulation, with a secondary use for music/movies. It is pretty much ideal for that now sans a few minor bugs that will likely be worked out soon.

The XGP makes a poor emulation system with it's 16:9 goofy resolution screen and analog stick. So the fact that it is LESS suited than the GP2X but will drain developement away is rather annoying. So now the system that is better suited for emulation will be hurt by one that isn't. This happened with the zodiac with its stretchtastic screen res and lousy analog stick. It torpedoed the GP32 pretty bad and caused some key devs to abandon the GP32. The XGP will be this all over again. Sure I can just buy an XGP too and play emus on it but I DONT WANT to play emulators on a stretched out 16:9 screen with an analog stick. Been there done that, and it sucks.

As far as the mini the same logic applies except instead of screen stretching and analog stick I will be stuck looking at a tiny screen and getting arthritis playing on that little tiny system.

I still don't believe that they will actually release both of them.
I actually rather doubt they'll release either of them.
DaveC speaks the truth, listen to his words.
The GP2X is here today and it is a great little console.
The XGP stuff will be worth talking about once there is at least a working prototype.
(oops, I almost went over 2 lines with that sentence)
I think that I'm going to type all my posts like this from now on.
It's kind of fun.
And I bet it annoys everyone loads.

(user was slapped for the spaces, And the excessive use of the return key)

Judging a system before released. Ha ha ha! Sadness.

Anyway, I don't see the reason in fighting about a small screen. If you can't play games on a screen like the GameBoy Micro's then you really need your eyes checked. The human eye can see as A LOT of detail. If the GameBoy Micro had a resolution of 1024*768, you would still be able to see the pixels. Ofcourse, for NORMAL people that have NORMAL and better eyes. If you can't then you shouldn't be toying with handhelds at all.

Why people want a small handheld? Simple. They want it to take everywhere and play everywhere. At school during class for instance. You can grab your GBM quickly, boot it up quickly and have a little fun. Same as putting it back where it came from (I assume your pocket). Now I love my GP2X with all my heart, but I am not able to play my GP2X during class. Not only cause of the fecking booting time, but also because it's pretty big to put back into my pockets.

Then we have the SDK. Making the XGPmini perfect for an audioplayer. Giving it the power to beat the iPod. How so? Well, I could imagine the XGPmini wont be able to play all formats (anything about OGG?). With a SDK people can make perfect music players! Without customizing the firmware or modifying the device. Unlike iPod.

And no, I am not saying the XGP will beat the GP2X. For the same matter it'll fail like the Gizmondo. But I, for one, am looking forward to it. As much as I did with the GP2X.
