those changed were definatly needed! i wonder how comes that gph listen at all... they actually did not listen to the community that much before...

anyway... overall... those 2 changes are excellent!

If you think about it, this is a perfect marketing strategy ;)

Seriously tho, I'm very impressed with GPH and their decision to revise the console. I didn't think they would do that. Very well done to Evil Dragon as well for convincing them!

Dang, now it's up to me to decide whether I'll buy one or not.

"SunSpire"

Great news!

The first thing that happened when I saw that dual dpad design (other than the incredibly loud scream of utter disbelief) was that I decided immediately I would never buy one.

Now with sanity apparently prevailing with four buttons, I'm back on the wagon. :)

That is because I didn't actually use the pad until AFTER EvilDragon started complaining to GPH. I have little interest in playing games - I have the prototype purely to develop libraries and firmware for. Thanks for accusing me of lying!
Not lying, but when you made comments like:

It does diagonals for me.

I gave nkSNES a quick go when it first arrived ... From what I remember, Tetris Attack ran well
I figured you would have made mention if the pad was in fact "rubbish" as you now say, in case they did stick with it.

I'm just glad it's changed and we can look forward to a more successful machine.

But all of our games are freeware free to download on the internet so they wouldn't really need rights anyway. Provided they don't specifically try and sell the game to you then they aren't doing anything wrong.
Are you sure about this? I'm not, but from what I know of copyright law in other media, it most definitely is not legal to bundle them into a commercial package and advertise it as such. Does it depend on what licence you release it under? Do GPL et al cover these eventualities? I'm quite interested to know.

Edit: Specifically Craig bought the rights to distribute Vektar commercially from Dzz for a undisclosed cash sum so it was hardly out of the goodness of Craig's heart either, was it?

I don't think craigix ever does anything altruistically, actually. I think he is an extremly shrewd businessman and every move is quite calculated -- luckily for us that calculation usually includes making customers satisfied.

Orkie didn't actually play anything he just tested how well it ran. As he's already stated he's not much into playing games at all, specifically emulated ones.
How did he know the pad did diagonals if he hadn't used it? C'mon. The statement seems misleading by omission of the "but it's rubbish" part.

Look, I apologize to Orkie for insinuating he was being less than honest -- I genuinely think it was a miscommunication (probably my fault for overreading it) and not intentional. I shouldn't have brough it up.

As long as GPH aren't charging for the game itself and they include the source as per the terms of the license (assuming it is GPL) then I don't see anything wrong with it. However, my game is not released under any license what so ever and the source code is private. They would be able to distribute it without my permission (though I could probably try to sue if I were a money grubbing American ;) ). Anyway, GPH are being very kind to homebrew developers and very kind to the community right now so I think people should stop trying to pick holes in their kind gestures!

Sure, they could distribute it with Ensata and DS roms, but that doesn't make it legal. And especially not using it in their commercial promotion. Don't kid yourself, they didn't give you a free unit as a lovely present, they in effect purchased the right to include your game for the cost of that prototype. ***THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS*** I think it's a GREAT idea and I support it fully. The more of it the better. But it's dangerous to allow it to be taken at face value because some coder out there may not want to see their game exploited in a commercial package without their permission, or may want more than a Wiz to allow it. Personally though, I would be happy with that (I've done similar things in the mediums I work in--but if I hadn't been asked for permission first, it would be a clear violation of rights).

Lets not forget that most existing GP2X software simply needs a recompile to run on the new system (from what I've read previously), which makes its (potentialy) already existing software library quite impressive.

And it packs quite a bit of power, so it was, and still is, a very attractive little machine to me.

I know this. However, you do not understand that my game is FREEWARE. You can redistribute it however you want and with whatever you want. As long as my game DOES NOT affect the price of the console then it is not really wrong as you are NOT charging for the game.

And how does the customer know this? Look at their advertising - http://gp2x-emulation.dcemu.co.uk/Wizintroduction.jpg

It says "Built-in Games" in its own section ("Free Games" is another section). It does not make mention that these particular games are already freeware and could be downloaded anywhere. If someone didn't come from the GP2X community they would have no idea.

You could easily conclude that, say, $5 of the price tag was justified by these "Built-in Games". By advertising them in this way, you are in effect making them part of the console's price - whether that is $5 or $0.01 worth.

Once again, I don't have a problem with this since they have "paid" you guys for the right to do this, and I think it's wonderful.

They are copying the method of Craigix by sending free units to devs, and trying to get them to support their device.
Craig only rewards emulator authors. GPH have been kind enough to reward homebrew game developers too and for this I love them :p

Ah, Sam, nice to see you back to your old self, saying things you could not possibly know about.

Let's see:

http://gbax.gp2x.de/ - several hundred homebrew games produced with thousands of pounds worth of prizes given out over the years across loads of systems, including systems I don't even sell.

Numerous GP32 and GP2X consoles donated to people from this scene (and other scenes) for all kinds of projects, not just emulators as you claim, something which will continue with the Pandora.

We also did things such as manufactured a replacement cap for the F100 and gave it away free with the F100 (cost: $7,000) when GPH just ignored us.

Then at the end of this I make homebrew games and utils myself!

Ye nut!

I'm glad that GPH decided to go with the 4 button design over the 2nd D Pad. I was totally turned off to the Wiz, now I'm most likely going to get one.

Well the games, well mine is at least, are slightly different than the original versions that are currently available.

Eitherway, I am glad I am being repaid for the work that I put into making it and hence I shall ruthlessly support the Wiz.

I just meant that you don't tend to give out dev kits to homebrew devs not that you haven't supported the community in other ways.

Well done GPH!!!

Congrats on a great little system. Will definitely be getting a Wiz to replace my good ol Mk1 Gp2x.

When can we start preordering?

It is great that they fixed that goofy control scheme. Now if only they put in a decent sized screen that lasts they would have a winner.
