Squidgesnes 0.35 Hack

Hi,

I've been hacking at Squidges snes emulator, mainly to try and sort out the sound. It took me bloody ages to work out that stereo rendering is broken in the source code. I've not found the exact problem yet, so I have just disabled stereo rendering which gives us a temporary fix.

While I was fixing the sound I also added zipped rom support and also added support for quad frame buffering while in 16bit mode, this is still very much WIP but it works pretty well for the most part. I've also added auto-frame skip, there is no way to current switch this off at the moment as I've not looked at Squidges menu in much detail so I have no idea how to add extra menu options.

I've released 2 versions of the emulator, 1 has squidges original settings and 1 has Yoyo's GP32 hack settings. Again once, when I get to grips with squidges menu system these hack settings will be configurable from the menu but for now you will just have to have to binaries.

I've also included the source code, so you can hack away as well. If Squidge is happy with the changes he can merge them back into his main release.

Try the above version out if your having problems loading roms.

Now that's a welcome surprise... I did wonder who it was (given that it was the user's first post), but you never know in these frontier times :)

ZOMFG.
As soon as I can find my card-reader all will be well with the world, I am sure of it!

the new version 2 days ago worked good (yes flickering on the edge of the screen) mario kart loaded in 5 seconds!!! WOW

2 versions of today just don't load mario kart or sunset raiders... al previous squidgesnes version just did that :x

anyway i think it's great work for the people that can get this to run :)

Haven't had a chance to try it yet--what exactly are Yoyo's hacked settings?

This version doesn't run a single game that I throw at it, plus it seems as if there's no break button to get back to the menu. Am I doing something wrong?

EDIT: The 'hacked' version, that is.

EDIT2: Both versions fail to run a single game that worked in the previous version (the one you hacked up earlier).

It doesn't work for me either. I am glad to see you are taking an interest though, Reesy.

Did you ever get the source of ZX Advance off The Hive? I remember reading a thread on the GBAX forums ages ago where he said he would send you it for possible GP32 porting. I would love to see ZX Advance on the GP2X as I still think ZX Advance is still the best handheld Spectrum emulator around.

<edit>Zipped ROMs seem to load okay and there is a definate speed and sound improvement. Great work!</edit>

Hm ... this Version seems to be slower than the previous in the BETA-Section. Could it be, that the funny colours and the speedup in the previous version were because of a 8bit rendering?

8-bit rendering shouldn't be any faster than 16-bit rendering on the GP2X.

yes - noticed that, too. but i found another problem:

when i start my gp2x and go directly to the 0.35 hack and start it, i have no sound...
but when i first start the 0.34 hack from the beta-section and then start the 0.35 hack, i get sound...

and the 0.35 hack doesn´t like smc images. with the same file zipped, it works

Thanks Reesy for this wonderful work (not to mention squidge's impressive work ;).

the previous hack wouldn't even load a game, zipped or not.
this new version seems to work a lot better for me but, for some reasons, i just can't return to the menu by pressing the select key !

does someone has an answer to this problem ?

oops, after a 5 minutes buttons mashing, i finally understood that the volume was the one leading back to the menu !

this is so awesome, i cannot even comprehend the awesomeness... i hope you keep going at it and help squidge optimize the whole thing! Looks like we are damn close to seeing perfect snes emulation come true!

Edit: @godathell: 16bit is only the classification of the processor, not the graphics. Snes does 16bit memory allocations and such but displays 8 bit graphics (256 colors)... somebody correct me if I am horribly wrong...
