Squidgesnes V0.37 Released

... You actually like that game?

The only reason I like it is because it's a multiplayer rpg, great times finishing it on Zsnes. But, playing it singleplayer sucks IMO. A rpg should have atleast some kind of story. :p

The sound seems really stuttery, crackly and rough, is there some setting to improve it? I seem to remember the first release Reesy made with the weird pallette having cleaner sound. I tried various frameskip options but it didn't work.

Ah, this is lovely!
No need for clone keen voodo anymore and EVO with sound enabled is now playable for me, this has really made my day.
Thanks alot Reesy, keep up the good work!

I have tryed to get this thing working and I can not. can some help me. can I have complete instructions please!!!!

Have you read the readme.txt that comes in the squidgesnes_0.37.zip archive ?.

Trooper

YES i have read it please help
I am assuming you are hung up somewhere, either you don't understand something, or you missed something important.

Start from scratch, get the readme.txt, do the very first thing it says, it seems straightforward enough, I will walk you through it step by step.

1) Make a folder on your SD card, call it snes (you can call whatever you like).

2) Make sure you put everything from the Zip into the snes folder exactly as you find it because the skins directory needs to be in the snes directory.

3) Make a folder inside the snes folder, call it roms (important, Roms and roms are different to Linux, if you use Roms, or ROMS, or rOMS or anything other than roms I don't have much hope of it working.)

4) Browse to Games on your GP2X, select SD, select the snes folder, start the squidgesnes.gpe file.

5) Choose your rom and either click the stick down or press the B button.

Note to Emu authors, it might be worth it to do a mention of Case-sensitivity, and/or put an "empty" rom folder into your zipfile to avoid confusion, just my thought, no need to bother if you don't feel like it (I don't even play SNES Games :p)

Let me know how that goes :) I hope you get it figured out, it always seems hard at first.

I did that, and also made a folder and call it skins, it say some thing and then goes back to the main menu

I can confirm vimacs bug. In 0.37 layer order seems to be wrong. Cherrys, Bananas and the like will be drawn above the char.

Bug not existent in 0.34. Speed inprovement ist awesome though!

After getting home to read this, the bug is that Fast Sprites is enabled by force. Try disabling it in 0.34 or 0.35 and you don't have that bug.

Ahh this is one of my changes in preperation of my new rendering core. I completely forgot that this would screw up the normal 16bit rendering.

Bascially the fast sprites option is not required anymore. The reason for its existence is because of the way the sprites are rendering on the GP32 version of code. Sprites are rendering top to bottom, in stead of left to right, this means that the prioritys of sprites can get screwed up. The slow sprite mode has extra code to check the priority of EVERY PIXEL in the sprite. Because the GP2X video memory is now aligned in a more useful format, sprites can now be rendered from left to right, which means that priorities should not get screwed up and therefore making the slow sprite mode redundent.

The current 16bit rendering code still renders everything bottom to top, tiles get rendered this way and so do sprites. I completely forgot about this, so you may find that there are more sprite problems than usual, I'll address this issue before the next release.

Ah, so am I to take it that this is also why autoframeskip appears to be missing as well, because of the (upcoming) changes in the rendering code?

Nice speed boost. Never would've guessed battery code would slow it down so much.

I'd still like to see some better auto-frameskip as the FPS limiter runs too slow (for instance makes SMB allstars run at 25-27 fps when it runs at 35-50 with no limiting), and the hold select method for the menu kinda sucks in my opinion.

seconded. what about clicking the stick? even if it's easier to do accidentally, it's not that annoying or dangerous to get into the menu accidentally, since the first option is return to game.

just sayin :)

Yeah, I also noticed the sound is pretty bad. Might be something to look into for the next release.

Not that I'm complaining... this emu is wonderful. A lot of games run perfect with no sound at FS1. :)

Well, I only played Secret of Mana once through as a 3player about 13 years ago... was just wanting to relive it, but I guess it wont be as good by myself.

But anyway, I cant believe the speed boost, this is going to be brilliant when all the proposed improvements are made :)

I am sorry, no one can help you if you don't tell us what it says.

What Firmware Revision, and what Hardware Revision are you running on?

When did you buy/recieve your GP2X if you don't know the above two, if you have a boot sound on start-up that means Firmware 2.0

If you have a first Edition did you ever update the firmware or install SDL libraries?

Are you using a known good rom that functions in a PC emulator on your computer already?

You will have to ensure that your own rom is good, IE, no one on this board will give you any roms (at least not me, only because I don't want any trouble with the law).

Do you get to the Squidge menu? If not then where are your skins? There MUST be a skin or the menu won't work. (skins come in the zip file and are pictures that display the options and backgrounds of the emulator menus).

Does it dump you when you select a rom?

You need to give us the answer to thes questions before we can help you, if you want a script that outputs the error message you recieve to a .txt file so you can read it then ask nicely for someone to do it, alternatively I have seen such a script on the forums and you could search for it, I use a google site-search

Try making a .gpe file like so :

./*foldername*/*program Name* > output.txt

Name it test.gpe and put it in the snes folder, tell us exactly (copy and paste into the forum window) what it outputs, this will aid us in helping you.

Are you absolutely sure you unzipped the file and put it on the SD card as it came out of the zip?

No, no, no. Clicking the stick is a BAD idea. Not only will it keep going to the menu while playing but is will wear out the stick sooner. You know all of those problems with the stick loosening up? That is because the center button gets worn causing the shaft to drop and get stuck. Holding 2 buttons simultaneously like Start+select would be better. I wish all coders would take that center push out for menus.

Nice one! Great to see so many updates on the GP2X scene. You can expect a paypal donation from me next time I get paid.

secret of mana is really cool multiplayer but is still a lot of fun in single player. when i originally played it on super nintendo i only got a chance to play it multiplayer a few times cause anyone else wanted to play other quicker games so i played through the whole thing pretty much by myself and had a blast. while the story wasn't amazing it was definitely no worse than in any other action rpg of the time.
