Preorders Have Started. (Previously named starts in two hours)

Week 16 (14/08-20/08) : 12 preorders (863-875)

I'm not sure gamecom pictures and videos have had a big influence yet; by Monday morning we'd already got 6 extra preorders, and the remaining preorders came in pretty much one per day. Maybe the build up helped, but I'm fairly sure that if we see some more impressive movies soon particularly, that will help a lot.

Uh oh, lots of gamescom news this week, but that doesn't seem to have resulted in many preorders. In fact it's the slowest week yet!

Week 01 (01/05-07/05) : 563 preorders (0-563)
Week 02 (08/05-14/05) : 82 preorders (563-645)
Week 03 (15/05-21/05) : 53 preorders (645-698)
Week 04 (22/05-28/05) : 28 preorders (698-726)
Week 05 (29/05-04/06) : 29 preorders (726-755)
Week 06 (05/06-11/06) : 16 preorders (755-771)
Week 07 (12/06-18/06) : 16 preorders (771-787)
Week 08 (19/06-25/06) : 15 preorders (787-793)
Week 09 (26/06-02/07) : 10 preorders (793-803)
Week 10 (03/07-09/07) : 20 preorders (803-823)
Week 11 (10/07-16/07) : 10 preorders (823-833)

Week 14 (31/07-06/08) : 7 preorders (852-859)
Week 15 (07/08-13/08) : 4 preorders (859-863)
Week 16 (14/08-20/08) : 12 preorders (863-875)
Week 17 (21/08-27/08) : 2 preorders (875-877)

Those two preorders are one non-GSM 4GB unit (ordered on Monday) and one EU 4GB unit (ordered on Wednesday). No cancellations this week at least I guess. Perhaps the gamescom outing revealed how many little tweaks were required to make everything handle well. But now that tiler rotation mostly works, and we've seen video of it running an emulator from a deb package, we should see prototypes running cool stuff soon hopefully.

@levi
I think once ED gets the Pyra finished so that he can produce some game play videos, then I think Preorders will pick up again. He can also then get it into the hands of the media and youtube channels for marketing .

I noticed that before Gamescom, ED had sold very few GPD WINs , then during and after gamescom , he seemed to sell a whole bunch - maybe 30. No doubt because people could use and play it at Gamescom. Well that and because now they realize he actually sells it also :).

Well, the GPD Win showed playable games, while the Pyra showed, what, a terminal in the hands of anyone less experienced than Ptitseb. Plus all of the things that ED listed in the last news thread as still needing tweaking, like the shoulder buttons, I reckon the Pyra showing showed mainly how much further ED had to come, and less about how far he'd come, and it's really only us who've been following the news that know how exciting seeing tiler working for the first time is.

I've been predicting exciting videos for too many weeks now, but I can't see what'll stop them being produced now hardware is reaching production quality, and prototypes are soon to be sent out. Not for a few weeks yet though, I reckon.

Week 18 is up, and we end only one preorder higher than we started.

Week 04 (22/05-28/05) : 28 preorders (698-726)
Week 05 (29/05-04/06) : 29 preorders (726-755)
Week 06 (05/06-11/06) : 16 preorders (755-771)
Week 07 (12/06-18/06) : 16 preorders (771-787)
Week 08 (19/06-25/06) : 15 preorders (787-793)

Week 17 (21/08-27/08) : 2 preorders (875-877)
Week 18 (28.08-03/09) : 1 preorder (877-878)

We did have three cancellations this week though, although they were all back by Monday evening. It took until Friday afternoon to get the extra preorder though, which could be better. But it could be worse, I guess.

The previous worst fortnight was 16 backers.. The last 2 weeks starting from the last day of Gamescom, there were only 3 net additional backers . Not good. Backing has more or less stalled

Bring on the gameplay vids and more exposure

it's also been vacation month in more-or-less EU. not that ED was taking much of a break...

levi: Five cancellations even, all of which were replaced with new orders on the same day. Those were not all different new orders either, like swapping models, so who knows what happened.

Thanks; I thought I'd seen at least four cancellations, but going back through the stats I could only track three. I thought I'd seen someone cancel a 4GB EU 4G unit, and as you say that can't have been an upgrade (the next person seemed to buy the same unit). I must admit, if I didn't trust ED to do the right thing, I might be put off by the delay in getting video evidence of tiler working (beyond a few seconds of Stella running), but I guess ED has been keeping too busy shipping out C64 and PS2 games recently to commit the time to getting a professional video done.

Well, Since the Gamescom showing, ED has sold about 40 GPD WINs net .(58 in total now). So that gives you a baseline that shows it wasn't holidays or anything else like that. In the same time there were 3 net backers for the Pyra . There were probably 100's of WIN sales in total from other outlets of the WIN in that time - that is to say that the figure is even worse when you consider ED is the sole outlet for the Pyra, but one of many for the WIN.

I think that clearly shows the importance of having something to show that's close to fully operational that can show gameplay. It's hard to deny. Of course having something along side it at Gamescom that can show gameplay and contrasts the price sure doesn't help

I think it's really important now to get something working and make some videos of gameplay, and the Pyras strengths - like it having mobile data, replaceable battery etc etc. A show case. In the mean time, we are just marking time until then

don't complain too much... and when ED does start the videos, you'll need to be good proselytizers, too :)

That is the first time seeing that word used in a sentence that wasn't a description of how you would actually use it in a sentence.

you have 100% freedom to muck about with the device, including removing binary blobs or adding them...

i didn't use "libre" for that reason ;).
