Re: A game idea - are you interested?

If the 3 Dimensionality of mode 7 causes more problems than it solves then certainly it makes more sense to avoid it. At that point it falls to the art design to make up for the lack of dimension with pleasing visuals. A good deal of time and work should be put into designing the characters and the environment.

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

Hm, let's think about this some more. What if you still used the usual 2D-top-down design, but assigned a z-index for every tile, and then applied a simple fog-effect on each tile depending on how far away from the camera it was?

Then you could have something like flying, since the ground would look very bleak and distant when you 'focused' the camera on your flying object. Just a thought.

Just don't make this game ordinary; it has to have some gimmick that makes it stand out.

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

I wonder what the best choice in graphics style would be, something like Zelda: minish cap or more like Tales of phantasia (More cartoony with bright colors or "realistic" with more realistic colors):

I actually quite like the style if the minish cap but ofcourse I also want to know what you guys think. and for the flying, I'll see what I'll do, it was just an idea (the flying) so I'll see what I do with it in the end.

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

IIRC, The Minish Cap basically uses a two-layered tileset with special effects such as offset shadows, reflections etc. What makes it stand out is that all sprites are incredibly well-animated, since they aren't just oriented in 8 directions but much more, and have separate head and body animations. Nothing special about it all other than high-quality animations.
I'd prefer the graphical style of Tales of phantasia (now that you mentioned it), since it's just more than the usual pixel art.

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

what I liked about the 3d / mode7 idea is you can usually see a lot more.
The purely 2D screenshots suggest that the game will have a very small viewport.

Keep in mind that the Pandora has 10 times the amount of pixels compared to a GBA. We'll have plenty of room to draw stuff on, provided that the devs don't become lazy and use pixel doubling.

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

What do you guys think, would you want a game like this, what would you add to this idea
Well if it was my game(or if i had the time/knowlede to make a game, the last time i made a game i was 13 or so and used qbasic) it would be a mix of dwarf fortress, harvest moon and animal crossing with a good balance between procedural/random created and unique content.
You would start with a single small house in the wilderness where you need to survive. You can grow your food, hunt animals, collect fruits, chop down trees, make a fire and cook your food and build structures like a fence, furniture or irrigation for your farm etc. After a while people will arrive asking you to settle there, because youre the landlord/lord of this area and you can decide where they build what they do etc(altough like in df you have only indirect influence on them).
Everyone has a random name, personality, likes different things(some of them would be unique characters with complex dialogues to make it deeper) and has a profession and producese different goods etc. like in DF. You can watch people working for example you would see a fisherman standing at the sea fishing sometimes catching a fish and carrying everything at home or giving it to a cook who then makes a delicious fishsoup. Of course everthing would be less complex and much slower than in DF maybe most things that the people do would be calculated at the beginning of an ingame day. Every day some or all of the inhabitants of your town generate a quest ranging from "i want a beer", "i need you to kill the wolves that are killing my cattle", "build me a well near my farm" to " i need 7 mushrooms to cook them". All consistent to theyr profession, personality or your actions and the surroundings. You could help them or spend the day working, fighting, socialising or you could improve the infrastructure of your town.
Needless to say it would be the greatest game ever :D
If you dont know dwarf fortress yet check it out.

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

Don't worry, I will not use pixel doubling, I thought about using 80x80 for the tiles and character so you got this on the pandora screen:

What do you guys think of the character, would I keep those proportions or would I use something like in Tales of phantasia, where the heads are almost as big as the rest of the body. Also I've got an Archos (portable media player) which has the same screen as a pandora so I can easily see if it will work on a 4.3inch screen.

@ drd20: Some of those ideas are exactly what I had in mind, the thing that will be in the game for sure is that you have some kind of house you can decorate in some way and put your collected items in. and some sort of quests you do for people, and ofcourse it would be awesome to see the people go fishing or planting seeds,...

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

nah, super-deformed characters are going too far.
I think those proportions are okay, but are you going to make the tiles that big? I keep thinking of Golden Sun, where the tiles were smaller, and the characters took up some vertical space, so they overlapped with tiles behind them.

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

I would do something tales of phantasia (great game btw) style because those proportions may look good but theyre harder to animate and even if you do it good they may look odd because you're always comparing it to real people in your mind.
a compromise would be something like in seiken densetsu 3 .

I would quite like to see the latter, personally. :p

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

Heh, many RPG fans in here, nice...
Another game that comes to my mind would be Terranigma where the proportion of tiles and sprites was like in GS and SD3.

This is starting to make me want to work on my game again!

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

I would surely make the head bigger than on the screen I posted, just to be able to have more facial expression.
And Lulzfish, your right about the tilesize, I changed it to 40x40 with the character being 80x40, I think it will be better like this:

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

Nice artwork, good luck with the game Dragons_Slayer :) I like the idea of open-ended games, perhaps it's because I played very few of them, but I think the genre is full of potential as long as it's gently steered in the right direction.

Just make sure your game's goal will sound a bit more fun than Wild World's, quoting Wikipedia

The main objective of Animal Crossing: Wild World is to pay the mortgage of the player's house to Tom Nook, a shop owner.
-_-

Re: A game idea - are you interested?

while we're at it, i'd like to throw in dinosaurs, music based combat system and supa saiyajin powers.

Re: Animal Crossing based RPG project - need suggestions

@ Alex: Don't worry, my game is meant to be better than AC :p

@ Xian Long: Dinosaurs? Maybe. Music based combat system? Good idea, their will be something with music in the game (as I am a "musician" myself). Powers? why not. supa saiyajin powers? euh... no.

Re: Animal Crossing based RPG project - need suggestions

I like the idea. I've never played animal crossing, but I like the concept. I very much like the ToP-style graphics and would prefer them to realistic ones. As said before, don't worry about the game looking childish or not having blood, gore, guts and stuff. Just make a good game. Good luck.

Re: Animal Crossing based RPG project - need suggestions

If you include really cool RPG elements ( dungeons around the town) and make that the way how to make money (along with fishing etc.) than It would be really a nice game, without no.

Re: Animal Crossing based RPG project - need suggestions

Well actually the topic name is still a bit misleading because I started with the idea of a better Animal Crossing, but I also like games like The Elders Scrolls, and for sure there will be some sort of fighting. I have a lot of ideas already but I don't know if it's a good idea to talk about them because it would make the game to complicated before I even started making it. For now I want to know what graphical style would work best, Some people said they liked the ToP style but I like the style of Golden Sun just a little more, what I did like about ToP is the water reflection of your character and the separate layer they used for shadows of things like the trees, so I would try to do those things too. I was also wondering about the color palette, here are 3 pictures of Golden Sun, which of these looks/works best in your opinion?

Also just thought of a working title for the game, I will call it "Multiventure".
