Master Class - Pokemon style game?

There are a lot of RPG engines, but I have to finish deciding how I want my game to look. As it stands, I'm not actually thinking of your regular 2D tile based world, and as such, that'll make a lot of engines require a lot of modifications. So I'm going to try this weekend to develop a prototype for the "view" I'm going for, but if it's too complicated for me, I might drop back to 2D tiles.

How about even collaboration with Stephane Hockenhull on the BetaBlockQuest engine from the Rebirth Comp?

should this go more in the cute Pokemon direction or are cooler "badass" Monsters planed? Could make a big difference I guess. :)

Pokemon already has both, and some downright creepy ones. Just so you know. Saying it takes one direction over another kind of showcases that you've not played any of them. ;)

That video looks like the Animal Crossing style of landscape, I'd like that, Makes a change from the original top down view used by the 8 and 16 bit eras extensively.

I think he was asking what direction this game should take, rather than stating that pokemon was lacking one or the other.

Indeed it is. I'm not sure if to keep it as cylindrical as that, or to make it slightly augmented to utilise more of the screen.

I was thinking of getting it so if you go to the map view, it would flatten out and the camera move to overhead and zoom out. But I guess that's polish for later in the dev cycle.

I've just pieced together my code framework. I've still got plenty of design work, and I'm not sure about having some form of scripting going in to the engine. I risk making this too complicated,

This project is definitly a nice idea.

Will you make the battles 2D or 3D?
Not sure, I'd like to do it all 3D. The problem I have is that I'm no 3D modeller, where-as I'm okay-ish at pixelart. I guess I could voxel it, or hope that somebody is willing to assist with the 3D stuff.

Are people bothered about a single player story mode? or just want an "open world"?

Oh, I know. It just read that way to me, that's all... :p

Anyway, about direction, I'd like to know that too, but I'm guessing that it's way too early for me to be asking that.

If you can pull this off. people would love it. just don't call it pokemon. we don't want to draw attention from lawyers.. evil evil lawyers.

!!! Everyone! ... Brilliant perfect idea... A spoof on our mythical namesake... Pandora's Box...! It doesn't have to be accurate, after all we do want a fair amount of cute creatures. But we can use the concept of Pandora's Box as a springboard for ideas and plot line.... What say you all? :)

The game is going to be called "Master Class: Collectable Creature Combat", but could use Pandora's Box in the game, maybe as an item to capture creatures.

Regarding creature style, will probably look at having a decent mix. I guess how cute they look though depends on the art work

Can I just say that I *really* like that idea. :p

Hooray! Cute I can do.

Sign me up for some of the Creature designs! :)

IMO it would be a lot easier (and look more appealing) to make 2D sprites for all the creatures. At least for V1 of this game.

If this is going to be the case, how many frames are we looking at?

3D. Nice.

Hope you'l get it done.

Open world is fine for the beginning.

If you want to add a story mode do so but it's not that important for me as long as the battle system is good.

I would also say at first concentrate on the battle system and the world as such. Further more i am for 2D sprites for the monsters because in this way it is much easier to get a decent amount of them in a short time. And how about an editor so that users can create monsters with their own spritesets?

That would make things complicated when it came to the multiplayer if people had different monster lists. People will get their chance when I do the Create A Creature event when I'm further down the line

Yes, I just meant the pure graphical design. "Pokemon-cute" or more "mature" styled Monsters?

Maybe something like this:

of course I also could live with this: http://suptg.thisisn...51331281449.jpg
