I Just Got My Gp2x!!!

Got mine! Really nice service from Gp2x.xo.uk, I got a card too and a cd of bits and bobs. Got one dead pixel but im living with it for now.

So...many....emulators....

and payback aint bad either! Better start looking at the homebrew games now i suppose....and then perhapse start making one myself!

A dead pixel? That sucks man, I didn't know dead pixels were acceptable here :-\ Perhaps it's stuck, try that video that changes colours rapidly to see if you can get it working again.

If a pixel is dead it will be black or white. If it is stuck it will have a colour. If it has a colour (ie green) it is not dead, and should go away with time.

Hmm, it just appears as a tiny grey dot on the screen (that doesnt wash off) as i turn my head it looks like its on the screen itself under the main plastic/glass of the screen. If it isnt a dead pixel and is instead dust is there anything i can do? I mean it might not be wise to open my gpx2 is it? :(

Hello everyone,
Got my gp2x just before Christmas, been lurking around the forums and the file archive for a couple weeks before that. I've been extremely happy with my gp2x so far, I got the 266 mhz version from gp2x.co.uk along with a case. Been playing metal slug on neogeo, various rpgs on ssnes and gnuboy2x as well as enjoying nethack, quake, descent et al. A tv out cable and power supply are on the way from gp2xstore.com as well. I've been really enjoying the community so far and soon hope to start developing, possibly with python. So, there's my introduction.

Just got mine - a 266mhz capable with 4GB card and ansmann batteries/charger - although I'm quite impressed at the battery life from a pair of simple duracells - been playing MegaDrive and Speccy games for the past day and a half, and I'm only halfway through the batter life meter :)

GP2x.co.uk offered sterling service and came through in record time. Very, very pleased. The card was also formatted to 3.75gb FAT32, so I didn't need to source a card reader to get going.

Looking to start developing some original games soon. My ZXSpectrum emulator for windows doesn't really need porting as Speccy emulation is well covered, so might as well start on some original content!

D.

I ordered my GP2X from Play-Asia on the 26th when I had the money. Ive ordered the value pack and it ships tomorrow. I am extremely excited about it and cant stop talking about it. I order a 2gb card on ebay for £14.69, and I have 8 recharable batteries and a 2hr charger. Now hopefully I dont get hit with taxes.

Hello all out there, I am writing this for Arjan, my 7 year old who chose this over an XBOX because it is open and he wants to learn programming. He paid for it himself!

A couple of newbie questions.

1) Why does the start menu have so many unneeded steps to get to games, first games then sd card, then games again! and then where it was supposed to be at the first click. Any way to short cut this?

2) We want to learn about emulators and play with old style arcades, any pointers or urls would be very much appreciated.

3) Anybody out there in the San Francisco bay area that we can hook up with and exchange info? email to general at simulsync dot com

Thanks a bunch and happy new year to you all.

Phillip (Arjan's Dad)

Install Gmenu2X. It eliminates all of those steps. With this installed the screen will come up with a matrix of icons to load things. It is much faster to use.

Welcome to you & Arjan!

I recommend the excellent menu replacement, gmenu2x. You can find it here.

Two helpful starting points:

Shinneri's GP2XNewbie
The GP2X Wiki

There are many different emulators to explore. Just be sure to read the readme.txt files in each one you download, for instructions on use.

Have fun!

I received my new toy last Thursday and I'm impressed with it. I mainly bought it to watch video's on it but I wish it could play rmvb files though.

I just got my GP2X today, things work ok but I can only ruun them on the NAND memory, because for some reason which I don't know why, it wont read my 4GB SD card. when I boot up the system it get to the loading screen & just freezes.

Does anybody here have any ideas why this happens?
This is brand new today & I was really looking forward to using all the great stuff out there on it.

Please can somebody reply ASAP.
Cheers & thanks in advance

Is it formatted as FAT32?

You might have gotten one from the defective-SD-slot batch. Format your card to FAT32, and if it still wont work then, return the GP2X to your reseller.

Best of luck!

NSCXP2005: shine a light down the SD slot. If you see any of the gold pins bent back, return it to the supplier for a replacement.

Seems there was a batch of defective SD slots around Xmas time.

There is more about this (including how to fix it yourself) here: http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=34345

I highly recommend returning it while it's under warranty though!

edit: sorry Alex, didn't see your reply.

Well,

My little GP2X came today and so far I'm impressed. I really like how this little guy is emulating things so far:

NES, SMS/SG, Genesis, TG-16, and Lynx all run very well and some ran roms my old PDA never could run

SNES, umm....not so good, so far, only tried two roms mind you, definitely need to play around with it some more, one game had no sound, the other was s.....l.....o.....w

Will add more emulators later, I know that the MAME and NeoGeo ones are a little harder to get up and running, I'm still getting my feet wet

Cant seem to play videos, don't know why, I have converted some WMV's to DIVX and changed the extension to .avi, the movie player comes up barren though, its not recognizing a single movie file I put on my SD card, help would be nice, I really am CLUELESS on this one, sorry

I thought playing movies would be easier than playing emulated games, I WAS WRONG

Unit is fairly nice, man is it LIGHT, joystick isn't great, especially when scrolling down files, screen is nice and backlit, clear, good sound

Overall, I'm glad I got one as emulation was the number one reason I got the thing and it seems to handle many consoles quite nicely

Boy, I will sure tinker around with this thing more on the weekend as time is limited right now but I like what I see, hopefully I'll play some Duke3D soon and delve more into the homebrew scene

re: SNES, make sure you are using the latest SquidgeSNES and the options are set correctly, e.g.

Frameskip: Auto
Vsync: Off
RAM timings: On
Audio quality: low as you can handle, I leave mine at 11k (fiddle with the Audio performance hack, some games run better with it on, some it makes crash)
Battery warning: Off
CPU clock: as high as your unit can handle.

Some roms won't run fast no matter what you do, but the vast majority (80%+) should...
