Well this thing officially sucks balls.  Only 200 MHz!  WTF are they thinking!  This thing sucks!  You won't even be able to do SNES any better than we do now!

Then no backwards compatibility!  So we would have to throw away 4 years of emu and homebrew and wait another 4 just to get to where we are now!  That is just moronic!!

What a bunch of idiots!

why not wait and see what it'll do in the flesh before you totally write it off davec?

You keep referring to just the one processor, forgetting that there is much more to this handheld than there is to the gp32.

As Squidge says that other CPU is not useful for emulation.

It is *200 MHZ* guys. That means no better SNES, No Neo-GEO,GBA etc. That is basically the same as we have NOW! Only it is worse because noene of the current stuff works. So what the hell are you going to do with this thing? Watch movies? That is all you will do with it. You ARE better off with a PSP, even the movies are better. I don't see the point. Why bother you may as well just keep what you have now.

Gamepark are the idiots for making 4 years of emus and homebrew useless on this thing.

You are forgetting two things-

1. The processor may overclock. The only reason you say that we have 200mhz at the moment is through massive overclocking.

2. Gamepark Holdings and GBAX have stated that there are "numerous emulators" for this system. Unless they are lying there will be available emulators and these may be as good if not better than the stuff the GP32 has now.

We know way too little about this machine to be either pre-ordering or being too critical.

They are obviously lying. What do you think that Craig or GP sat there and ported all of the emus themselves, considering the sources aren't all available even? I would bet they are saying that as they think there WILL be emulators. A little pre-mature in their advertising. All the thing will do from day one is movies, BFD there are TONS of movie players out there.

ok davec, i bet that by christmas you will have had a complete reversal once the thing comes out and proves how wrong you are quite likely to be.

Everyone is of course entitled to their own opinion, but you are going way over the top. Unless you have a crystal ball and can see 6 months into the future, what you are saying is complete nonsense.

Ramming your (unfounded) thoughts down everyones throats is OTT. The way you are talking, you would think you did have psychic abilities.

The main point of confusion for me is regarding the claims that there are numerous emulators in existence.

This, as has been stated. will not be in the form of backwards compatibility.
Therefore it must either mean in the form of linux emulators or specific emulators coded and released by Gamepark Holdings.

Considering the confusion at the moment I think it is silly to boast "numerous emulators" when offering pre-orders. At least we should be better informed of what these emulators actually are.
I have a sneaking suspicion that they are either refering to emulators that run under Linux or are refering to emulators that haven't been written yet, but that they expect will emerge for the GPX2. If backward compatibility is ruled out, that means they aren't talking about existing GP32 emulators running on the GPX2. I don't think they can write and release their own emulators that will run on the GPX2 due to legal issues.

For them to mention specific emulators like SNES does imply that they are already available. From a consumer perspective seeing emulators mentioned would make me think that they were already present AND in a playable state with sound........

If that is the case then it could only be ones that will run under Linux I guess?

Actually it's more likely that they are refering to the fact that they are releasing the SDK as open source. And that means they are allowing legal third party and amature development on the system :) . So you KNOW it's gonna get hombrew!

could craig clear the emulation situation up for us and let us know if emu's already exist (linex emu's etc)?

Dave, please, just give it some time. It can't possibly be THAT bad, and like someone already said, it will most likely be able to be overclocked. I really don't think we have anything to worry about.

As far as the emulators are concerned, they HAVE TO be talking about linux emulators, but unless it's running a full version of linux, it still doesn't really have any made for it yet unless gamepark holdings actually ported some already... which is doubtful. I personally won't be buying one for a while due to a lack of money, but also because I want to wait and see how this thing turns out before I spend money on it.

from GBAX-

Dual CPU core, 2d Hardware, Linux OS, 8 buttons, Digital control, full media support, SD card support, 32M+64M internal memory, open source, numerous emulators, Price to be lower than current GP32!

"numerous emulators" is included in a list of facts.

from gpx2.com-

Meet the exclusive GPX2 games along with abundant emulators such as MAME, SNES, Genesis, PC Engine etc

"abundant emulators" suggests they are already in existence. And there are a lot of them.

If these sentences refer to software that could possibly be released at some point in the future should some coder decide to, then this is disgraceful and surely illegal advertising.

As it stands we dont know if they are telling the truth or lying.

things to remember about the Video co-processor:

It's a modern chipset designed for high bandwidth graphical applications and, knowing ARM's usual design policy can no doubt include custom instructions depending on it's usage, not a just a 2D graphics chipset designed to do some simple situations. It's used in a number of DVD players and playing back mpeg2/4 isn't exactly easy on a CPU.

mpeg encoding/decoding is practically all pure number crunching. It a decent amount of access is given to it, this number crunching ability could be used for another intensive maths task : fixed point 3D.

We have no idea what kinds of custom instructions the console will be able to handle and how fast it can do them. Using the DS as an example again the cpus's seem relatively puny but due to being optimised and designed around an opengl like set of commands (it also apparently does something very nifty with the way it handles tiles), is suprisingly powerful given it's specs.

If we get close to full access to this processor, it would hugely increase the power of the handheld. Yes multithreaded programming is hard to get your head round and to optimise but thats the way consoles and PC's are heading. It's nowhere near as hard as programming an emulator core in ASM anyway...

just looked on the gpx2 site and there has been 58 posts on the korean side and 115 on the .com side!! So it appears that they really do have to rely on the worldwide market more than their home market.

...hello,
Thank you for your nice comment on gpx2.
We are planning to make options to choose bigger ram.
What do you exactly mean "digital pad"?
And unfortunately Gpx2 will not run Gp32 software
Thank you again,,^^

...Hello,
Thank you for your interest in our product line.
CPU clock speed is 200mhz.
Thank you ^^"

So no psychic ability just reading ability ;)

hello all
just my opinion :
i think that the backward compatibility with gp32 is wrong
and for great emus i think that game park hope that will make emu on it like the gp32

so it's easy to port emu on other system when you have sourcecode and if you wrote it

but i prefer psp because it have better power and of course it run great 3D games^^

But the thing that leave me without words is the sentence:
"PLAY GAMES: MAME, SNES, etc".
Well, if this is the future, you should go away from this device.
I think that if a guy just wants emulation, the GP32 is enought.
Are SNES and GBA emulation too slow?
Yes, they currently are, for most games...

The gp32 is still selling well, and the gpx2 should be both better and cheaper, so anyone who would have been looking to buy a gp32 is going to rush to get a gpx2. Ok, so maybe a lot of people won't be upgrading, but there's still a market for a device of this kind of spec and price.
Except that since it's not backwards-compatible, it won't exactly be "upgrading". Unless programs from GP32 are ridiculously easy to port to the GPX2, that is.

Anyway, I still think that the design for this thing is wonderfull. If only it was more powerfull... I mean, we weren't asking for a lot, were we? Twice as powerfull as GP32 would've been fine. As it is, this is just like a Zodiac in power - so why not just get a Zodiac? It's not really a step forward from what I've seen so far, aside from the extra buttons and switch to SD.

Well, i guess we will all see then the GPx2 Web admin answers our questions once again at the sugestion page. Which i guess it will be tomorrow morning. I've asked about if the EMU's will be included.

And DaveC, Did you honestly think the GP32 would be as it is now back in 2002-2003? I really think guys like Reese and Ryleh would try to optimize the emus for this system too, if they get one, and if professional coders like that does it, why would they not use both?.

Then, is there any practical example you can give why it will not work. Not all theoretical. I've never seen Dual CPU core in action exept for in a computer, where it was common knowledge dual is better then the sum in a single.

One competitor is out since this week: the Tapwave Zodiac is discontinued!

I'm looking forward to upcoming commercial games, I'm really curious what will come out.

It's very smart to have SDL already ported from the start on.

If there will be really 2 different GP32 successors, then they made a terrible mistake!

yep, i can read, i too have eyes.

I don't question what the main spec of the system is but you forget that it will be used in a different way compared to the gp32 as it has more than 1 trick up it's sleeve.

You are thinking one dimensionally, you really are not looking at the bigger picture.

Now stop being a pain in the ass davec and try chilling out till october/november. All this ranting and raving can't be good for your blood pressure.

And anyone who is yet to vote in the poll over in the general forum, please give it a go! click here

I can't wait to see how angry DaveC gets at the XGP.

It's a personal conquest.

Specs have already been announced for that. It is closed system so I don't care about it.
