I can't wait to see how angry DaveC gets at the XGP.

It's a personal conquest.

Specs have already been announced for that. It is closed system so I don't care about it.

nothing's official yet ....

Well, i guess we will all see then the GPx2 Web admin answers our questions once again at the sugestion page. Which i guess it will be tomorrow morning. I've asked about if the EMU's will be included.

And DaveC, Did you honestly think the GP32 would be as it is now back in 2002-2003? I really think guys like Reese and Ryleh would try to optimize the emus for this system too, if they get one, and if professional coders like that does it, why would they not use both?.

No but I did think they would have the sense to at LEAST make it backwards compatible, even to the point of including a SD/SMC combo slot to read both formats (this is done on PPCs alot). Ok so it has a weak CPU and not much RAM but at least if it ran the old emus etc it would give some current users, especially NLU/FLU owners, a reason to upgrade. Plus it would start out with something. The new one will have 0 emus/HB the day it is released. It would be a true successor to the GP32 rather than a competitor as it is now. You may as well get a PSP or Zodiac or DS. Those have just as much in common with the new GP32 too as none of these will run GP32 apps either.

Really why bother with this thing? What does it do that the current one doesn't? can it run NeoGeo? Not at 200 MHz it won't, unless you shut off sound and run it at FS4. So why throw out the current emus for this? Why? For 40 more MHz and a couple of extra buttons? It just isn't logical.

And the key phrase you said is "if they get one" yeah, big if. I don't see why they would get one. The additional 40 MHz is hardly good enough to make them throw everything out the window and start from scratch.

junker, you are a modern day pioneer, good on ya!!

I preordered too, i don't know how people can make such a fuss over a £100/$200 videogame. It's not the most expensive purchase you can make in the world of handhelds. almost twice as cheap as a psp in the uk.

As all the guys from the good ol' U S of A would say, 'it's a no brainer!'

You would have been better off saving for a PSP. At least that is powerful enough for perfect SNES and NeoGeo.

Oh well have fun watching low res movies.

yeah man, since it is set for that price, and you will get video playback without reencodes, then i don't see what the fuss is either.

we all hope for it to be more powerful than it sounds, but it's not crap.

edit:
davec, i'm having plenty of fun watching low res HUGE file videos on my psp now, heh(which i also have to reencode). it's not like you can playback 480x272 videos!
and neogeo is great, but not perfect. it's not the emulators that i have a problem with anyway, it's the psp's screen and dpad. it really is that bad, for me anyway.

also, all pmps out there are qvga resoultion, except the new generation that are very expensive.

I can't pre-order till I know the price, but i got 150 quid waiting for when its IS releaced.

Well there you go. That is all this thing is good for is watching movies since none of your emulators will work on it.

in fairness, that may not be such a bad thing considering most gp32 emulators are rather flawed. Maybe a fresh start could be a good thing.

Not for a long long while. What, do you think coders just pull emus out of their ass? Do you think they just pull up their source and do a "save as GPx2"? First they have to buy this thing, then they have to set up a dev environment, then thay have to learn the system then they have to start coding, de-bugging, re writing, optimising. So one or two start coding and you may get a Genesis emu and a NES after a year that is as good as what we have now. Some obscure stuff like Lynx, Atari 5200, C64 may never be done.

And what makes you think that a new system with close to the same specs will be any different. The emus are only flawed because they are not optimised yet. Any new ones will be worse than what they have now because there will be more new bugs.

Do you really see those systems (especially the C64) as 'obscure stuff' ??

Well if the GPX2 does not take off as well as the GP32 did then DaveC is right in saying that we might not get some less-known emulators.

40 MHz? Isn't it kind of flawed comparing an overclocked GP32 to the regular clockspeed of the GPX2? It's more like 90 MHz with both of them overclocked. Also who knows, maybe this thing will be much cheaper than we think it is.

Just a thought:

Given Gameparks general lack of understanding, maybe they ment with GP32 software, those commercial games released for the GP32.
Because those will surely not run (can't fit an SM into a SD slot :p ).

But even if it isn't backward compatible, the similarities in design, and the similar CPU will make ports probably quite easy. Just don't expect that those ports use the second CPU until optimised for the GPx2.
But most emulators run perfectly fine on a single 250mhz ARM cpu.

And about all those whiners that complain about lacking power, what do you expect to come from more power?
Homebrew games usually don't even max out the GP32, except for maybe a few PC ports (which for the most part will run fine on the GPx2).

And emulators? Snes, GBA, NeoGeoCD and Amiga500 will probably work fine on the GPx2 (ok I am guessing, but at least for the Snes and the NeoGeoCD it is a sure bet),
All emulators that currently run on the GP32 will run just as fine (and probably a lot better)...
So what does that leave? The only console that is even slightly feasable for emulation is the PS1 (no the N64 is very hard to emulate, even on the xbox it runs like crap).
Now think of it, the PS1 has an analog controller (at least the dualshock games) with much more buttons, so most games will not be really playable, and also they are usually quite big which means either lots of expensive 1-2GB SD cards, or lots of very annoying file copying and maybe 4-5 games to choose from on the go.
Last but not least, with some ASM magic (as seen on the much weaker Dreamcast) a PS1 emulator is still doable on the GPx2.

But what are the cons of a faster CPU?
1. Much higher price
2. Higher energy consumption, thus less battery time (those 8-16h on the GPx2 sound amazing btw and I love that it still uses 2 AAs)
3. (actually connected to the 2.) Higher heat production by the cpu, which in result needs more passive cooling, thus making the console heavier, probably bigger and even more expensive.

So what is the point of a faster CPU?

he only console that is even slightly feasable for emulation is the PS1
No it won't be. Trust me.

Those are all unlikely, their would be a smallish hike in price - and the energy consumption/heat would not be really very big as, the faster CPUs are often more efficient than the slower CPUs.

What we need is an open-source Gizmondo with a bigger screen.
(400 Mhz with 3d processor, Bluetooth and all that other useless crap you guys love)

Is that too much to ask for?

Obviously yes. :p
Who wants that useless crap anyway. I hope the Ninja gets finished.
