Beta Fallout

From my point of view, Fallout is better for playing the first time, while Fallout 2 is better for replays (because it is bigger and more featureful). So, a static recompilation of Fallout 2 would be better for those who have already played the games, while neophytes would benefit more from Fallout 1. Another way of seeing it is this: Fallout 2 has better gameplay systems, more weapons, more towns, more things to do etc., while Fallout 1 has a more consistent (and better paced) story, gameworld etc. -- it is a matter of taste. Which is more important, setting (Fallout 1) or sandbox gameplay (Fallout 2)?

I have played Fallout 2 more, but think that Fallout 1 is slightly better, overall.

In the mean time, I noticed I had some debug leftover in the dosbox sources. I removed them and recompiled/repackage. It should be slightly faster (still not enough of course).

Could 3 be your third favorite?
Don't be silly, it's Gothic 1 or 2 of course. Fallout 3 is way off and more of an egoshooter with RPG elements to me (although still good).
My top 4 are both classic Fallouts and Gothics.

Does it make much sense to play Fallout 2 without finishing Fallout 1 first? I'd much prefer working on something I'd want to play myself, so that's why I ask.
As Haraldur said, story and consistency is better in Fallout 1 although to me that raises the replay value too. I've finished Falĺout 1 five times and the second one only once really since my first playthroughs were broken thanks to horrible bugs, the game needs all the community patches to be complete. In my first playthrough I once arrived in the desert with only the trunk of my car with no option to get my stuff moving further or going back later to carry it bit by bit.
And I disliked the beginning of Fallout 2 since it gives a disadvantage to everyone that doesn't want to make a melee character in the long run.
It's a matter of taste really but even if you like the second one more for some reason, you still should play the first one first since it has a better learning curve imho.

Thank you for your effort! Fallout 1&2 are excellent games and would be perfect to play on the Pandora. They are turn-based and interface is very "stylus friendly". The possibility of a statically recompiled version (hope I used it correctly) makes me want to cry.

I've had a look at Fallout 1, and am a bit confused. I have it on GOG and downloaded it there, which seems to give falloutw.exe (version 1.1) and falloutwHR.exe (hacked 1.2 for high resolution). Unfortunately HR depends on dx9 Direct3D and can't be used because wine's Dirext3D needs full OpenGL with shaders. http://www.teamx.ru/site_arc/patches/index.html seems to have a vanilla 1.2 (called 1.2.1 "semi-official" patch), which doesn't seem to depend on anything non-standard and is 836KiB of code, aka in the "doable" realm. There is also that "restoration" patch, but I don't really like gameplay modifying features as they may do something not intended by the game devs.

Is 1.2 the right version to look at?

Hi all :)

@ptitSeb: thanks for another great addition to the Repo !

Unfortunately, it's a bit too slow to be enjoyable IMHO (on my Rebirth OC'ed @ 1GHz). I tried to tweak the DOSBOX settings (I lowered the sound quality for example), but to no avail.

EDIT: FPS details don't show up in @notaz ' Live System Information. Is that normal ?

How about packaging an older (1988) but similarily themed game: Wasteland ?

Cheers, Magic Sam

I was trying to get someone to give that a try the other day. I don't know if a dedicated port is needed since emulators should be able to handle the original versions. Maybe it would help those that have the rerelease.

You didn't even try then ;) I finished the initial temple with both Intelligence way and Stealth way without fighting the final trainer (the stronger one)... also, there's a way to use many non combat skills to help you kill the final boss of the game

The first game is the best for the story, it's very replayable if you change character type, but after the first play becomes very short (mostly because you already know where to go).

The second one is more replayable, you just can't do everything with just a character, and karma+skills can make any play session very different... it's also VERY long, like three times the first one, but needs to be patched, because else it's unfinishable most of the time...

And because @notaz asked, the second one has a story by itself, so it could be played alone, but it has many references to the first game that can be seen only by who played it.

I was more talking about the initial equipment although of course there are workarounds.
I remember not having to fight him once either, no idea what I did since it was one of the first playthroughs about 15-16 years ago that were shot due to the many bugs of unpatched Fallout 2.
Both are great games for sure. I finished off the "master" of the first game in various ways (the completely non-aggressive one being my favourite) and never actually fought him, he always owned me when I tried anyway.
Most modern RPGs just don't give you so much freedom, games like the Czech "Inquisitor" being exceptions of course.

I've had a look at fallout 1 1.2 and it doesn't look good: it's compiled with Watcom C compiler with it's custom calling convention, uses longjump and worst of all - self modifying code. No wonder exagear is slow, the way this game does things is problematic for both emulators and any static recompilation attempts.

Anyway, Fallout 1 has a DOS version and is somehow playable on the Pandora. Fallout 2 is only Windows, so a static recompilation would be the only practical way to have it running on the Pandora.

(Self Modifying Code ?, on a Win95 era software, wow, But that also explain why dosbox has to fallback to normal core all the time)

I don't have this game in my collection, so I cannot do a package with extracting the data and al, but I'm quite confident it works well with DBGL.

About FPS and Live System Info: strange, has I have put the OpenGL renderer, it should show fps. I'll check later (but if tweaked the dosbox config and put surface or overlay, you will not have fps, as it's a function of glshim to put fps on LSI).

I left "output=opengl" untouched in the dosbox configuration file.

AFAIK self modifying code is only used for playing movies (I think that also includes animated characters during conversations) and not during normal gameplay.

The version of Wasteland that is now sold could be very different from the original one, is it still for DOS ?!
I know that contains background music, and all the text paragraphs with story and descriptions that in the original version are in a separate txt file, now are in the game

Thanks for looking at it! Nothing lost if it isn't feasible.

Are there any differences between the DOS and the Windows version in terms of how it's compiled?
