Best SNES games

The best games have all been mentioned already.

Not the best, but still very good games are:

Batman Returns

Super Star Wars

Super The Empire Strikes Back (best of the series)

Super Return of the Jedi (worst, still worthwhile)

You play as a badass wielding a shotgun blasting away at orcs strapping machineguns, what more do you need to know ;)

Its very similar to flashback in terms of the platforming and the shooting.

The reason I love it is probably because it has the old blizzard feel in the graphics.

I had all of these and they were all pretty good. Did anyone manage to complete Super Star Wars? The last level (I'm assuming) in the Death Star trench was actually impossible, wasn't it?

Most of my favorites were already listed, but I have two more.

NBA Jam: I hate sports games, but I really like this one for some reason. That's all.

Phantom 2040: A side scroller where you play as a super hero with acrobatics and guns more than any real superpowers. I guess it's based on a tv show, but I've never seen it. I don't think I've even seen the movie. But it has a lot of interesting elements, like the grappling hook, which gives you a lot of additional freedom. I don't know how to describe it. I guess a whole bunch of little things make it worth checking out. By the way, the worst element of this game: passwords. I swear, they must be thirty characters long.

Yeah, i remember getting really pissed off at that level...i don't think it was actually impossible, but it definitely seemed like it. Actually the last level in super ROTJ was also a pain in the ass, where you're flying the falcon out of the death star core. I'm pretty sure i threw the controller at my TV a few times on that one.

^Same here on RotJ. Except I tended to twist my controllers. Thank goodness they were so durable.

The difference with that one though, IIRC, is that you were frustrated at yourself because you messed up (again!). I don't mind that so much, in fact I remember kind of liking that level. In the trench it didn't matter what you did, you were gonna die

probably less known :

run saber

bubsy

boogerman

gods (better than the pc version)

super valis IV

parodius & gokujou parodius

Yeah, it wasn't impossible, just really hard for me. But I think that was my least favorite of the vehicle levels between ESB and RotJ. I haven't played Super Star Wars, so I don't know about that.

By the way, I never memorized the Konami code, but I did for Empire Strikes Back: ABYXABYXABABYXXYABYX.

another game series that started on the msx :)

searched on youtube. the msx version looked like crap tho.

the entities are not animated or whatsoever.

The snes version is the best home version IMHO.

sexy pandora on mame/arcade is very awesome as well. Very rich in animation.

This game is hilarious yet furious in term of action side scrolling shooter.

Its pretty animated for a game from '88 the SNES version is from '95 Thats 7! years

This game is a parody on gradius (or nemesis) games also for MSX and SNES if you look at the early Nemesis games it compares to this parodius as the new parodius does to the new gadius. Nemesis III is actually one of the most advanced games on the MSX2 graphics wise

Old (msx)(nes?)

Nemesis II(gradius)

Demon's Crest

...

That game was so amazing. The music, the atmosphere, the different forms. I think my favorite must have been the water form, but they were all good. [Off-topic] My friend picked up Gargoyle's Quest II about two weeks ago.

-Illusion of Gaia: This is an action RPG similar to The Legend of Zelda series, but with innovations such as your character being able to transform into stronger, more powerful beings.

I love that game, ever played Soul Blazer? The Graphics are very very similar(to the point where I strongly believe it's the same developer)... have to look that up... yupp it was(Quintet)... and they have made another game in the same style called Terranigma... guess I have one more game to play! :D

They also made Actraiser 1 & 2 that you mentioned... played the first one, loved it... tried the second one but the Rom didn't work on the emulators I tried.

My list (most have already been listed :/)

  • F-Zero Probably my all time favorite game, first game I tried on my pandora :)
  • R-Type 3 very hard side-scrolling shoot them up, and if you do finish it, starts again in impossibly hard...
  • Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss No fancy graphics, plain action. Bombliss puzzles are cool. 2 player bombliss battles are great. And features 4 player familiss for fast speed action
  • DoReMi great platformer, good graphic/music/gameplay
  • CamelTry control the stage, not the ball!
  • Legend of Zelda
  • Macross side scrolling shoot them up
  • Pocky and Rocky
  • Pop'N' Twinbee vertical shoot them up, rich graphics, rich colors, great music
  • Pop'N' Twinbee - Rainbow Bell Adventure platformer with the same characters at shoot them up above
  • Wild Guns
  • Super Turrican (just 1, Super Turrican 2 sucks on SNES)
  • Pac in Time
  • Contra 3 / Probotector
  • Hammerin Harry
  • Parodius
  • Super Street Fighter 2 (and Turbo!)
  • TMNT Tournament Fighter

For multi player SNES, my pals and I spent countless hours and nights on the following: (not counting 2 players fighting tournaments we had on Street Fighter 2 Turbo, and the various Dragon Ball Z installments):

  • Various Bombermen 4-5 players
  • Familiss 4 players
  • Micro-machines 4 players
  • Street racer 4 players

I haven't read all previous posts, but I'll try to mention some of the games not mentioned:

Action/Shooter:

Strike Gunner: Decent vertical schmup, similar to Aero Fighter.

Super Earth Defense Force: Horizontal schmup, good graphic and cool weapons, a bit hard without cheat.

Total Carnage: Top down view shooter similar to SmashTV (or Ikari Warrior), except you go through levels not just in a room. Not the best game ever, but has its fun factor.

Operation Thunderbolt, Yoshi Safari: Aim and shoot stuff.

Turn-based strategy:

Super Conflict: Gulf War theme strategy where you move units on a hexagonal map. There are land, air and sea units each with different strengths and weaknesses.

RPG:

Uncharted Waters 2: Probably has the biggest game world for the SNES. It's an open ended navigation game where you get to sail the whole world, to discover, trade or pirate. There are 6 characters with their own storylines. Very hard game, but intriguing once you gets into it. It plays better if you don't cheat.

Other:

Beavis And Butthead: Hilarious adventure game.

Keeper: Fun puzzle game where you have to push blocks to match colors or symbols in the blocks to make them disappear. Much more fun than Bejeweled imo.

Puzzle Bobble / Bust-a-Move: SNES version of frozen bubble.

Vegas Stakes: Casino game.

One game I'm pretty sure hasn't been mentioned: Unirally (also known as uniracer).

I spent my childhood playing ultima, civiliasation, super mariokart, sim-ctiy and unirally. Unirally is probably THE most underrated game on the snes.

Unirally is a 2d side-scrolling unicycle racer. Fast paced and requiring reasonable dexterity it can be an extremely frustrating game if you don't stop making that exact same mistake over and over and over again. You play as a personified unicycle, that is either up against a single computer controlled opponent or in split screen multiplayer .As is common in most racing games, you have groups of tracks (mario-kart 'cups'), with more 'cups' opening up if you win some. The game has a seriously arcade feel, with the colors and sounds bound to drive the adrenalin. There are no use-able item power ups, but some features of the track can be positive or negative (slowing slime, speed boost arrows).

However, if you perform a trick and land it (like pushing jump and holding the shoulder button to perform a forward roll and chucking a twist in for pro-ness) then you get a small speed boost. Also, unlike most racers, 1 out of the 5 tracks per 'cup' (i think they use leagues) is a stunt track, meaning that you need to perform enough tricks to achieve a certain score to pass the stage. Of course the point value of these tricks have diminishing returns, although different combinations of the same tricks will still score well.

There is also a progressive difficulty change. if you beat the introductory level unicycle (bronsen - bronze medal) then you gain access to the medium difficulty level (sylvia - silver medal). The game really takes an interesting twist once you have access to the higher difficulty opponent and the harder tracks.

Once you are at the hardest difficulty level (i think his name is goldwyn - gold medal) you are racing against a dirty - no holds barred opponent. This uniciycle is some sort of magic evil genius-cycle as he has powers to really make life difficult for you.

Invisible track, backwards controls, background moving in a non logical direction to confuse you are just some of the tricks he can inflict on you with no warning - just a cackling laughter and message on the screen at the precise moment that the effect occurs. this in itself can be disorientating as your mind flashes between "oh no, that laugh, he's done something" to "whoa writing, wait, what did it say" and "where the hell did the track go". These effects seem to be used sparingly on the easier tracks (only the hardest difficulty cycle opponent has the abilities), but once you get to the last sets of tracks then he pulls out all the stops.

The learning curve is not very steep, although to master the game requires a great level of skill. Even though there are lots of races to be had to finish the game, each win still feels satisfying.

This game is right up the charts and probably the best snes game not containing mario or zelda.
