A video. Again. Mostly about cases.

At least two reasons.

1. To keep the Fn layer symbol sets from the right side of a standard US English keyboard contiguous and over/under shifted/unshifted.

2. To keep the seemingly "weird/offensive" to some German symbols grouped together so they do not distract.

3. because the German a, u, o umlauts are over on the right side of a German keyboard. i claim part responsibility for putting this in the Pyra in this way, but it also freed up the left Fn keys to be more intelligently grouped, as Grench mentioned. a, o, and u are all over the place...

German Characters are printed in orange and present on Fn+UIOP.
Actually, they are on Fn+OPKL (unless the layout changed compared to the first keymat samples, but I doubt it, as that positioning makes sense.)
The positioning of ü,ö,ä is similar to a german keyboard, but each shifted by two steps to the left. And ß moved from the top row and is now grouped together with the umlauts.

Sorry - I was working from the blurry low resolution picture in my avatar. I don't have a Pyra yet. If someone has a clear picture of it, send us all a link.

Shoulders are:
Shift & Fn on left
Alt & Ctrl on right

Fn key is on keyboard near space bar, that would be right lower corner. Left shoulder has Shift and Alt-gr. Letf Alt is the Start key on keyboard.

There are two Fn keys. Left Fn and Right Fn. By default there is no Alt-Gr defined.

Left shoulder has Right Fn and Right Shift.
Right shoulder has Right Alt and Right Ctrl.

There are actually 10 modifier keys.
Left Shift, Left Alt, Left Ctrl, Left Fn and Left Super (dp logo key) are on the keymat.
Right Shift, Right Alt, Right Ctrl and Right Fn are on the shoulders.
Right Super is the magnetic switch that triggers when the lid closes.

Though there is a good chance I could have which set is right vs left backwards, you all get the idea.

Is it something to be concerned about, that the photos don't match the schematics (v5.x)?

No. Go by the keymat photo. That layout is 'stable'. The schematics listed in the WiKi were old when they were originally posted up.

Except the software will be beta and people won't buy for the first year. Reviewers will not like the old hardware and the unfinished software.

Congrats you got a bad review with or without paint by tech writers and you won't have a market aside from techies until software is refined.

So delay for no reason...
Except that most of the included software will be standard Debian. That actually gives you quite a lot to be going on with software-wise as long as you get the basic drivers in place, which is what is currently being worked on. Also, people do tend to understand the concept of additional and more polished software becoming available over time, so I don't think that side of things is going to be nearly as much of an issue as you are suggesting.

Rotator and hardware acceleration don't work together. There was never definative news that the cpu had full speed. Sound issues persist.

There are many more issues.

Unoptimized debian...will be rough in most gui cases.

Again. I like watching stuff improve and i know it will.

These things are a big deal to normal consumers and especially reviewers.

The Pandora needed like 4 years after release to become the great device it is (still) now, it lacked many things at the beginning, but one of the greatest point was the PND system, even if not so straightforward to be used at the beginning.
That was a killer feature, you were able to put all your programs/data in another Pandora just by using the same SD.

The Pyra will start without most of the limits the Pandora had at the beginning, so you will get most of the software right away, but for a use as a "normal" handheld, without specific optimizations or pre-made key-mappings for games.
I don't know what is the actual state of the DBP system, but I hope it will be usable at the "review-time", because it could really make the difference from all the other similar devices out there.

... this should not be necessary to communicate in English, German or French

English is never a problem as it has so little "symbols" on letters or extra-letters. So this keyboard is adapted to "German and French". I think there are a lot of other western European languages with a lot of millions of speakers and we will see how good we can transform/adapt keyboard to work well with those languages.

In my opinion "US International" layout was the best option, adapting it to Pyra Keyboard, as with US International you can write directly (with SAME layout, not changing) in all important European languages (and this includes languages spoken in America, Australia and other places with strong European presence).

Of course I KNOW "It is -done-", so now we only can wait to have Pyra and adapt keyboard by software and see how good adaptation goes (with a Keyboard for German/French with its "special" characters).

PD: Daily I use 2 western languages in my computer, so I prefer to use only US Int layout, instead of changing between different layouts constantly.

...There is no Alt-Gr. These are fully realized characters on the Fn layer.

... there is an entire additional layer accessible by Fn+Shift+key. Fn+Shift are laid out to be easily 'chordable' - to be pressed with a single thumb on the front right keymat corner or shoulder mashed with the finger(s) on the left shoulder.

Well, German and French language will be good served (English doesn't need it). We will see how all other western languages, with millions of speakers, will be served without AltGR (mapping it on other side). We will see as "it is done" (good or bad, "it is done").

If you have to use it a lot of times, pressing 2 modifiers (at same time or consecutively) will not work in good way. We will see how we adapt it.

I don't envy the decision that ED has to make.
I bought new feet for my mouse and I was sick of the sticky feeling that I assumed was just sweat that had built up. I tried washing the shell with different soaps but I found it easier to scrape the problem off.
I'm starting to think that the layer of paint on the plastic was actually the problem. Whether it has gone bad or just reacted to my oils, I don't know.

I really don't want this happening to my Pyra.

Yea, I definitely agree that we don't want that happening. I think it should be possible for us to get painted cases that don't have issues like this, but I definitely understand that concern, because that would definitely not be a good thing to have happen to a gaming handheld.

Ok, so the Pyra could be used allready, but the Time its need to make this Painting /Coating dos the Pyra OS improve..

But wasnt the most fun on the Pandora after the first Massproduktion Runs this live improving of the Software? Learning how to work whit its flaws, and enyoing every Hotfix ??

Im a Pant Pocket Carryer, so the Paint needs to be pretty thought, thats way i dotnt need the Paint..

I dotnt think the Paint will be that poor like on the Pandora, so lets wait for it, on or tree weeks more or less, ...

For me, the Pyra is just a Hobby Device, a Toy whit Computer Features, i dotnt need it for my Job, its nice to have, but not neccessary..

As an early adopter of both the GP2X and the Pandora, I will agree with you that the launch is an exciting part of the experience, with all of the software coming out daily. It was really fun to see what new apps were ported and what new things I could do. However, I was talking about the base OS. Currently, afaik, the Pyra's base OS is not at the level that either the Pandora's or the GP2X's was at or before launch. If a delay due to making the rest of the product better means that the base OS will have time to mature, I think that would only help that early time w/ the Pyra to be more enjoyable.
