A video. Again. Mostly about cases.

I had gotten that. I wonder why two of the German extra glyphs are placed on the I and the P key (and I guess these are A-Umlaut and Eszett), while A-Umlaut would rather be associated with the A key (on German QWERTZ it be right of L, that's not what I'm talking about; I'm talking Fn layer like you) and Eszett with the S key.
At least two reasons.

1. To keep the Fn layer symbol sets from the right side of a standard US English keyboard contiguous and over/under shifted/unshifted. This has several advantages in learning the layout and in using games & applications that operate the shifted versions of key with "shift plus unshifted symbol" instead of the shifted symbol result. A quasi fix for something that caused frustrations on the Pandora.

2. To keep the seemingly "weird/offensive" to some German symbols grouped together so they do not distract.

statement: If you want the Pyra to succeed (and be upgraded in the future) it needs to sell reasonably well

observation: People (not already aware of it) are more willing to spend a large chunk of money on a Pyra if it looks like a high-value item

Except the software will be beta and people won't buy for the first year. Reviewers will not like the old hardware and the unfinished software.

Congrats you got a bad review with or without paint by tech writers and you won't have a market aside from techies until software is refined.

So delay for no reason...

3. because the German a, u, o umlauts are over on the right side of a German keyboard. i claim part responsibility for putting this in the Pyra in this way, but it also freed up the left Fn keys to be more intelligently grouped, as Grench mentioned. a, o, and u are all over the place...

German Characters are printed in orange and present on Fn+UIOP.
Actually, they are on Fn+OPKL (unless the layout changed compared to the first keymat samples, but I doubt it, as that positioning makes sense.)
The positioning of ü,ö,ä is similar to a german keyboard, but each shifted by two steps to the left. And ß moved from the top row and is now grouped together with the umlauts.

Sorry - I was working from the blurry low resolution picture in my avatar. I don't have a Pyra yet. If someone has a clear picture of it, send us all a link.

Shoulders are:
Shift & Fn on left
Alt & Ctrl on right

Fn key is on keyboard near space bar, that would be right lower corner. Left shoulder has Shift and Alt-gr. Letf Alt is the Start key on keyboard.

There are two Fn keys. Left Fn and Right Fn. By default there is no Alt-Gr defined.

Left shoulder has Right Fn and Right Shift.
Right shoulder has Right Alt and Right Ctrl.

There are actually 10 modifier keys.
Left Shift, Left Alt, Left Ctrl, Left Fn and Left Super (dp logo key) are on the keymat.
Right Shift, Right Alt, Right Ctrl and Right Fn are on the shoulders.
Right Super is the magnetic switch that triggers when the lid closes.

Though there is a good chance I could have which set is right vs left backwards, you all get the idea.

Is it something to be concerned about, that the photos don't match the schematics (v5.x)?

No. Go by the keymat photo. That layout is 'stable'. The schematics listed in the WiKi were old when they were originally posted up.

Except that most of the included software will be standard Debian. That actually gives you quite a lot to be going on with software-wise as long as you get the basic drivers in place, which is what is currently being worked on. Also, people do tend to understand the concept of additional and more polished software becoming available over time, so I don't think that side of things is going to be nearly as much of an issue as you are suggesting.

Rotator and hardware acceleration don't work together. There was never definative news that the cpu had full speed. Sound issues persist.

There are many more issues.

Unoptimized debian...will be rough in most gui cases.

Again. I like watching stuff improve and i know it will.

These things are a big deal to normal consumers and especially reviewers.

The Pandora needed like 4 years after release to become the great device it is (still) now, it lacked many things at the beginning, but one of the greatest point was the PND system, even if not so straightforward to be used at the beginning.
That was a killer feature, you were able to put all your programs/data in another Pandora just by using the same SD.

The Pyra will start without most of the limits the Pandora had at the beginning, so you will get most of the software right away, but for a use as a "normal" handheld, without specific optimizations or pre-made key-mappings for games.
I don't know what is the actual state of the DBP system, but I hope it will be usable at the "review-time", because it could really make the difference from all the other similar devices out there.
