Release public beta test

"this server does not support resuming"

:(

Why? My connection drops often, so this makes your site virtually unusable to me...

Also, I can only get between about 0.7k - 6k lasting only 1 second roughly

every 23 seconds. My download graph looks like a bunch of very lonely needles.

In comparison, the File Archive supports resuming and I average at about 23k a sec... sometimes I can get over a 100k a sec!

While your site looks and works great, I would be mortified if it became the only place to get apps as downloading is both painful and (if larger than a couple of MB) sure to be impossible.

I refuse to use Pandora Apps for almost the same reason - "this server does not support resuming" , although I do get much better download speeds there.

Ah! Finally! a 2MB has just finished downloading from your site. It took just over an hour.

@ FaeMinx

oh dear im looking into this for you now, I do intend to support download resuming just for you :) (and anyone else it may benefit).

although in regards to download speed it should be same as file archive and also apps.openpandora.org because its on the same server.

UPDATE:

I have implemented the ability to anonymously report an application (or prehaps a comment on the app page) there is now a report button at the top of each app details page.

for moderators you have the ability to view the reports and take action if needed then complete the report if it has been delt with.

Why thank you! I can't wait! :)

I did some more experimenting last night and you are indeed correct - it's my connection that's to blame (must have been playing up at the time). I was able to achieve comparable speeds with the File Archive. So all I'm waiting for is download resuming! Hope you get it going soon. :)

Also, +1 for supporting backgrounds, themes, sounds, or even fan art... as that way I could upload stuff too. No pressure though. ;)

UPDATE:

All emails that are sent to the end user i.e. registration, app upload receipt etc in plain text rather than email (some people were having issues with html emails).

UPDATE:

@FaeMinx partial downloads/resume downloads is now supported :)

added a few more checks to the pnd_upload script to make sure you don't upload a pnd where pxml contains many applications blocks with the same ID.

also checked to make sure logged in session hasn't expired before submitting to db to prevent upload from having no owner.

I just tried to register, but after I click the link in the validation email, it just says "no username supplied"

@freamon I fixed that bug now yo ucan either click forgot details to have the correct link sent to you or remove the ";" symbol after your username in the url that should work.

UPDATE:

added a donate button for those that may wish to give thanks.

hopefully more updates to come later.

@FaeMinx partial downloads/resume downloads is now supported :)

I've just tried to download 'Wars: Commando' and I still get 'This server does not support resuming'

Just to make absolutely sure I paused the download and on resume it did indeed start from scratch. ???

I'm using Getright under Windows XP if that makes any difference?

Ill have to look into this.

could you please try again?

ok I realise my method of enabling file resume wont work without some server config so ill need to ask EvilDragon to sort out the config for me.

UPDATE:

added test script into my upload/side_load script that after realizing the pnd is an update of an existing app *should* copy the old pnd into a new archive folder.

(this is the first step into introducing the ability to download older versions of a pnd)

:)

its untested however so if anyone has any issues with this please let me know (of course u will only know anything has gone wrong if it doesn't work), most likely there will be some php error displayed on the screen if something goes wrong.

A few days away and the progress is noticeable. Nice. :)

Forgive me if I'm stupid or blind, but is there an RSS feed? Or will there be? Keen to add a sidebar feed on Pandorapress.

IIRC it's on the cards but was (is?) low prio. If only I had your patience, I'd probably search back through the thread to find the post where I asked the same question ;-)

Are the categories at the top of the page supposed to act as a weighted list? Or is my browser making 'Games' and 'Arcade Games' bold because of something else?

yes its basically a "tag cloud" the cateogry getts nigger bigger (oops) and bolded the more apps are downloaded within that category

:)

^ First, I think you meant 'bigger'.

Just from a usability perspective, I'd lose the weighting on the categories and keep them uniform. If you wanted to show how big each category is, perhaps adding the number of uploads in that category in brackets or something. This is just because it helps distinguish from the actual tags (which I assume are the white ones), and keeps in line with what most other sites are doing.

I realise that this isn't really a priority though, and it's not really a problem so long as people know what is what.

thanks for pointing out my spelling error.

ok the main categories are the dark dones and the subcategories are the white ones, the bolding and enlarged font just shows that lots of apps that fall into that category have been downloaded. it has nothing to do with the amount of apps in the category.

I may look at replacing the cloud all together at somepoint but its not a priority at the moment
